Trading for his rights so they can sign him prior to him becoming a UFA on July 1st.
Edit to add: Would seem like an overpayment if this is the case, but I have full faith the Leafs will in turn trade that pick for the rights to Jiri Dopita or something along those lines.
Hrm..can't see a 1st being involved.I would say a 3rd at best.

Definitely seems like a high price, even if Mats is signed and sealed.

Hmmm...you'd probably have to go back to Daigle and Berard.
Wow...LA update, they have 10 PICKS in the first 4 rounds...in a deep draft, that's FANTASTIC for a rebuilding team. And I still think they'll swing some of them for a player or two.

Hmmm...you'd probably have to go back to Daigle and Berard.
Daigle was the first guy I thought of (1993?). That's pretty impressive if you have to go back 15 years to find a bust.
But Berard was, at worst, a top 4 d-man before his injury, no? Maybe not a stud but if that's how we're defining a bust, again, the NHL is looking pretty good.
edit: Stefan in 1999 is probably the worst since Daigle.

Pyser : Again, I don't think the Malkin trade was a real possibility (just like I suspect his agent publicized the Russian league offer to point out to the Pens that they better pay up). And it doesn't make sense for LA to pony up massive dollars for one guy...they're still building. And Malkin wouldn't help their awful goaltending situation, anyway.

Cammalleri is a good offensive player, but he's only a one-way player and doesn't really help a team like the Kings as much who have weak goaltending. And he was unhappy and out of here after the season anyway. He's a better fit on the Flames, and it was a good move for them.

Best development system any of the major four leagues too. I don't even mean the minors, but the juniors, international and all of that, there are ample places for players to go to get high quality talent to play and to develop. Teams may still rush players, but there isn't a real need to as much as in the other sports.
Not as much hype and press coverage in the US for players coming up, helps blot out the white noise too.

Jared could be worth a 6th-7th round pick. The thing about being more talented started when his father said the best of the brothers was the youngest, but he was actually talking about Jordan and it kinda started a huge misunderstanding.
Jared is huge, but he's an awful skater. That said, he got better through the year and I think he may have what it takes to be a journeyman. But his skating is really bad.

No, he hasn't. Burke gave him a deadline of the draft, but then extended it through the weekend because of Scotty's kid being born. So expect to hear a decision Monday.
Teemu is also expected to provide an answer by free agency (although Burke can't compel him like Nieds, as Teemu is technically an UFA), and Nieds decision will likely again impact Teemu's decision.
