Why do I get collect phone calls occasionally from strangers that are inmates at the county jail? I never accept the calls, so I have no idea why these people are calling me.

Does anyone else ever have this happen?

I got one the other day. It didn't even give me the name of the inmate, so I immediately rejected it. Do they just randomly dial someone??

The guy mumbled his name, so I didn't understand it. I think they might randomly call people if they are lonely and have no family or friends to call. Oh well, it won't be on my dime.

I just thought you'd like to talk.

The fact that there's more than one means it's probably not random.

Maybe your number is very similar to a number posted at the jail for some service (like legal aid).

Those are just Alabama fans wanting to talk trash.

Maybe a friend who had to spend the night at the drunk tank thought it would be fun to carve your phone number into the wall with a message like "For a good time, call Debbie"

I always use the "County Jail" spiel when I call my girlfriend in case her hubby answers.

There was a scam several years ago where inmates would call people, and ask them to press a number which then allowed the inmate to make calls to other people while a confused number pusher wondered who the hell called Beijing.

I had it happen. Operator came on and asked if I'd accept a collect call from "inmate." Hasn't happened in quite a few years, though.

can't remember who you are married to, though it isn't cuervo, but could he have possibly been imprisoned and wrote his phone number on the prison wall for a good time? That seems like the simplest explanation to me.

Happened to me 4 or 5 times about a month ago. It's basically a call forwarding scheme, just hang up.

My neighbor thought it was a family member and when she received her phone bill, there were all kinds of calls made to her phone, that was forwarded to a cell phone and all kinds of charges.

(Ping: Alan T -- see, I used the word "shit", because it helps me demonstrate my toughness. "Stuff" would not have helped me in that regard, in this particular context.)

I had one from the Monroe County, MI county jail. I live in the Bronx, NY but due to having friends in Detroit & a couple downriver I almost called to see what the deal was. Almost.
