Today I learned that my best friend in High School died this last September of skin cancer. He had largely grown apart from our group of friends from high school now that we were in college, and when a mutual friend tried to call him up today to catch up on old times, he got the news. If any of you would join me in sending out a prayer to the Broderick family, I would greatly appreciate it.

Absolutely.
I can tell you from experience, being that young and finding out that someone your same age has died is a huge shock. A good friend of mine from college was killed by a car while riding his bike a couple of years after we graduated, and I found out through the alumni magazine. It affected me more than I thought it would, and we hadn't even spoken since we left school.
