Direct TV DVR Question

I had DTV installed yesterday. I don't have two connections for the HDDVR - so now that won't work. It doesn't look like there is a TIVO box that will work with satellite and record in HD?

Am I really screwed unless I install a second input for the DTV HDDVR box?

They should have fed two lines from your satellite. If they didn't, yes you're screwed.

I didn't want them to. The feed was going to come through the floor and my wife would have shot me if I let them just drill through the floor.

There is no TIVO solution from what I'm reading if I just switch to an HD box?

We only needed two lines so we could record and watch two different shows (or record both). When the yard people cut one of our lines, we were able to still watch and record one show at a time.

Right, this is what we thought would happen. It's an HR21. When I put the sat in tuner 2 I can't get the Guide. When I put it in sat 1 I can't get any picture.

In case anyone ever goes searching. In the setup menu under satellite, change from two tuners to one and it will stop looking for the video on tuner 2.

Even though forums swear it figures it out on it's own with a reset - that did not work for me.

It came through the cable outlet. There are 14 cable outlets in the house, but not a second where I can get it to this box.

They should have installed the wall covering that allows two feeds out and fed them through the same outlet. Sounds like a poor installation job?

and fed both cables through the same place.

Yeah you need to call them and demand the installers come back and fix it properly.

Don't they need to run two wires through the wall to run through that double plate? He told me that an electrician could wire it that way, but he didn't have the ability to get the wire through the wall to the spot.

While it's possible that might be the case, that would be extremely unlikely. If he wired your satellite dish to your box than in 99% of cases, I would think he would be able to do the other cable as well.

Where does the cable from your dish to your box go? Is it through an outside wall? Through your attic down a wall?

To be honest, I'd be livid if I were you. I'd be demanding someone out there tomorrow or whenver is good for you because whoever installed your stuff didn't do what they were supposed to do.

The box is in the basement, he went through the concrete foundation to get the line in there. He said he could have drilled a hole through the floor to get me the second line, but I figured if my wife came home halfway through that she'd go bat#(&$. It seems as though you'd have to be pretty talented to run that line through the wall. My basement is 1700 sq feet, and it's the exact opposite end diagonally of the house one floor up where the box is.

None of the 14 cable lines go in that direction they all go back up into the house, you can't follow any of them through the basement.

I'm not sure what to tell you then. Running a line is difficult if there's insulation. If there's not, tape the end to a tape measure and run the tape measure down through the wall. Have somebody at the other end grab it, untape it, and pull it through so you get some excess and you're set.
