No thread yet?
Daunte Culpepper has announced his retirement. After reading his statement, I understand why he was unable to find work. Just slightly bitter.
ESPN - Culpepper, unable to catch on as free agent, retires at age 31 - NFL (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3569109)

The Dolphins get to host Brett Favre's Jets in Week 1. Hopefully he doesn't know their playbook well just yet. :)

Totaly pumped for the Giants game.
I am sick as hell but drugged up and ready to go. Have some friends coming over and we are gonna party!!
The only thing that is weird for me is being on the west coast now and the game starts at 4:00 for me.

Couple things:
1. For the 2008 season, were calling him Jett Favre.
2. Anyone looking to roll with the Giants tonight, grab some Plaxico for the
1st TD score @ +800. Good stuff.
3. What better thursday QB: Smelley or Campbell?

I like Culpepper's letter. There's a strong expectation that players should be mindless drones who ought to take whatever the league doles out to them and be happy about it - there's something to be said for someone who points out some of the BS.

Let's not go crazy here, he's beating up a nickel CB and the OL is giving Eli all sorts of time. Eli is definitely playing great though as well as their D and OL. The Redskins are absolutely embarrassing out there.

I love John Madden. We get to hear him say how the ref had to have made a mistake, saying #59 didn't issue the late hit, it was #58 (Pierce) because of "carryover" from a previous shoving match. So then we get a super-slow-mo replay of the hit, where we have to watch Pierce, frame-by-frame, as he legally hits Portis, Madden explains how that's illegal...and then at the conclusion of that marathon clip, we see #59 come in late.

Yup. I thought this was going to be a rout in the first half. But Campbell is awefull. I have never really understood the fasination with him. He had one good year in college (when he had two first round draft picks in the backfield, and a senior field OL), but always showed he was slow picking up defenses and made dumb desicions when pushed.

so retrospectively, i think Eli was lucky to get out of that game with only one pick....not even counting the two balls that bounced off Washington DBs hands, he threw some ugly balls that the giants were very fortunate to retain possession on....not impressed with the SB MVP in week one.

Heading into week one, I have question for digamma, Jon, and the rest of the Georgia Tech faithful...
So far, in preseason, Calvin Johnson has looked uncoverable (Calvin Johnson looking greatin preseason.) Based on what you saw during his college career what is going to slow this guy down (other than injury or Jon Kitna's relative poopiness as a quarterback, of course)?
Can he be as good as he's looked (averaging about 70 yards receiving a quarter)?

He has the talent physically to be a really great receiver. There have been Wide receivers with really good physical build that just couldn't cut it in the pros though. I think if Calvin can learn the play book and can adapt to pro defensive schemes then he should be a real nice player for you. The guys that will be covering him are going to be at times quite good too though, but I can invision he has the potential to tear up weaker secondaries.
I don't get to see every Tech game anymore though, but this is based on my thoughts from watching him in college.
Matthean
09-05-2008, 08:26 AM
what is going to slow this guy down?
The fact that he plays for the Lions. He has another WR to draw coverage which is going to make it near damn impossible to try and how to cover both of them, but their utter and complete lack of a running game isn't going to help at all. It's actually kind of sad to see such a talented player being stuck with an organization that is so clueless on how to run things.

When the camera was on him at some points in the game last night, he surely had the deer in head lights look, or a look that just screamed I have know idea WTF is going on. Anyone else notice his facial expressions?? He looked like he didnt have any life in him at times.

Woohoo!!! G-Men getting it done.
Though...it looked like both teams were just playing out the string in the second half...pretty odd for a week 1 natinally televised game.
While I know there were some issues with Daunte and previous teams' management, I'm surprised that more teams didnt see a reason to bring him in to compete and/or backup with the amount of starting QB's that are really not considered the "franchise" QB. Or at least I dont feel most of them should be looked at in that way(see Matt Schaub).
Off the top of my head, it would seem like a decent chance for him in Houston, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota(not sure what bad blood might still be there, but the "Progial Son" returning might be big on and off the field), KC, and Baltimore. Not saying he should walk in and start or be guaranteed a spot on the roster even...just seems like it couldnt hurt to let him compete for one.

09-05-2008, 09:45 AM
Hey Dante, by my count, you had two NFL teams offer you contracts this off-season. The Packers and Steelers both gave you an opportunity to come in and compete for a job. But, with the Steelers, "I just was not willing to take the vet minimum and no guaranteed roster spot." and with the Packers "I just sensed that when it was time to negotiate that there were some unresolved issues that kept them from giving me a market-value offer." If that's all you can get, that's your market value, bub. I'm not slamming the guy for choosing to retire, but don't make it about the man keeping you down when clearly there were opportunities available.

He pretty much was never gonna start in Pittsburgh, and he was more looking at being the 3rd string guy. I can't imagine him getting the starting gig in GB after what happened during the offseason. I think he wanted to go to a place where there was a legitimate chance for him to be a starting QB. In the right situation, I think he could have been an excellent fit for Detroit because he could air it out with those two WRs. The problem is Kitna is already the vet placeholder as Detroit tries to develop the next guy.

So what was Daunte's market value? And how many teams did Daunte reject? Was he better than Beck and McCown in Miami before they got Pennington? Sure. Would he have signed there to compete? Probably not. There were rumors that he was looking for a two year commitment from a team. Who knows if that is true or not but it seems consistent with reports that he acted as if he was coming off his near MVP season than one where he only threw 5 TDs.

As someone who lives in MI and gets subjected to this kind of horrible play every year, this is bad even for the Lions. They faked a flee flicker and the Lions defender had the guy virtually in his grasp after the fake pitch back and the guy still broke free. In other words, the player was standing still, facing away from the defender, and the defender with all of his momentum couldn't bring the guy down. At times like these I wished I could change the default team Fox shows every Sunday for me. This is also why I for the life of me can never take over the Lions in any pro football game. I keep trying to find a team worth rooting for, but always find it odd to cheer for a team that doesn't even play in my state.

Straight up, the Falcons offense is going to be decent this year. Sure, the Lions are helping them look better, but the offense has the talent to be solid. It is the Falcons D that is very, very, very weak. I'll not be surprised at all if the Lions still ends up winning this game. 2nd half of Lions/Falcons should be interesting. Lions defense has been near non-existent and is now without Sims. Atlanta's DBs can't hang with Detroit and the Lions are finally figuring this out. The Lions will try to be aggressive in the 2nd half. I think if Atlanta can do the same they'll be ok. It's like they went up 21-0 and then put it in neutral.

dola: Take the risk of firing a pass that hard backwards so it's a fumble if it drops, plus Steven Jackson has to stop and make a target for the pass so he is flat footed after catching it and it takes more time as Bulger has loads up for it instead of flipping it. Again, just a strange play.

No worries, Scott Fujita with the pick to end the game. Saints with a nice win. Reggie Bush was very impressive today.
I thought the Bucs did a great job containing Bush...until that one play. :)
All in all, the Bucs look okay, but Jeff Garcia is looking old...Galloway is looking old...Antonio Bryant is looking old...Warrick Dunn is looking...well, he still looks young, but he's not much of a factor these days. Derrick Brooks still looks good, except when he's hurt on the bench...and his replacement can't touch Reggie Bush to save his life (or in this case, in order to save the game).
One sour grapes moment early in the game: The Saints receiver did make a "football move" when he caught the ball and braced for the ensuing hit that jarred the football loose, that would've been a touchdown...but those things happen, you can't review a judgement.
Anyway,
The Saints looked good today, especially the D-Line, congrats on the win.

I noticed that too, but maybe that clock was inaccurate. I did think the pass interference was called unevenly. The penalty that set up the last Jets TD was a 50/50 call, but the Dolphins receivers weren't getting the benefit of calls in similar situations.
I didn't like the offensive playcalling in this one. As I poisted earlier, what's the point of play action on 3rd and 11? Too many short passes throughout. We need to open up the passing game so our RB's will have some space.

The only problems are Chad hasn't got an arm, Ginn can't run routes, which leaves Fasano (who looked excellent today) or Greg 'Is This The Way To' Camarillo who are both possession type who don't stretch the field. Basically the passing game isn't going to threaten anyone - we need Ronnie and Ricky to open up the pass.
Chad is as good a QB as we can get and is a good match for our receivers - if they aren't going to get downfield we need someone who generally is accurate and protects the ball (forget the last INT - may as well take a chance).
I thought the interference call on Goodman was harsh as well, he seemed to be turned around and they were both pulling at each others arms.

The Bills did look good, but the Seahawks looked just horrible. No run blocking (go go revamped running game), no pass blocking (Hasslebeck got pounded on), no special teams (Plackemeier looked atrocious, and he could have tried to tackle Parrish but just stopped), and even the 1 FG Seattle got was a lame duck that barely went through.
Combine that with Burleson (that's the top 4 receivers now) and Morris going down and Arizona fans should be excited. Hopefully Seattle can come home for the 2 games they have next and settle down.

:withstupid: except my QB was Palmer and his sub 100 yard day. I have a 20 point lead with Addai and Wayne to go, and he's got Viks D and McFadden left.

What is Carolina doing hanging with the Chargers in this game?

Pay for it, problem solved. If it doesn't fit into your budget then don't get pissed at them for the price or for not giving it to you for free. What other companies do you "hate" because they aren't fair to you?
again, every single sport, for every single season, since 1996 has been a free preview for the first week...got that....MLB, NBA, and NHL are an entire WEEK of games to try to entice you to purchase the product....so in addition to raising the price of the Sunday Ticket to almost 300 bucks this season, they have taken away the free preview weekend and instead are offering single games at 45 dollars a game...again, i ask, do you even have directv or are you just talking out of your ass?...how about you just suck my balls instead of me paying for it [smiley of me giving cringer the finger /smiley]

Not sure, but as long as Carolina doesn't score 38, I don't care :)

49ers are less than 2 minutes away from losing to the Cardinals at home.
Mike Nolan was wearing his suit today. At this point, it's like putting lipstick on Arno from Green Acres. I think the suit industry should protest Nolan for denigrating their clothing. I'm now calling Nolan the Suit Of Failure, or SOF.
The Cardinals managed to have the ball for nearly the entire 4th quarter. Martz will help the offense, but turnovers were crucial. O'Sullivan threw a pick and fumbled, and Takeo Spikes fumbled a short kickoff.
It's only the first game, but I get the feeling the only thing that could save SOFs job would be a 9-7 8-8 or 7-9 miracle division win in the NFC Worst.

No big deal for me, I have Cassell and Cutler on my bench as backups for QB just in case. Since I'm up by about 30 points with A.Gonzalez still to play, it didn't hurt me at all.

So who were the people who said in the draft thread that the Falcons shouldn't pick a QB with their first rounder? :)
*raises hands as well*
I promise you' I'll be quite happy to be wrong. I'll already go out and say everything I've seen of Ryan (even excluding this game) suggests I was. He is looking to be worth a 3rd overall. He impresses me how hard he works, and really takes charge of the team even though he is a rook. He made a couple of real rookie throws today, and will make some big mistakes this season, but he seems a guy who will not let that phase him. I'm pretty excited to watch him develop.
On the flip side, the Birds still need interior defensive line bad, bad, bad. It looks like this would be a solid offense, if there was a defense that could keep them in it. I just think they won't be able to stop anyone.

Having DirecTV has nothing to do with this actually, the fact that you are crying because you feel entitled to something does. Being disappointed I could see, but outright anger and saying you hate the company is a little sad to me. The fact that they have given free previews in the past doesn't mean you are entitled to them for the rest of time though. They changed their mind, suck it up and live with it. My guess though, you won't cancel DirecTV, so even your anger over this is hollow much like your reasoning.

the fact that you dont know what the fuck you are talking about is much more significant as far as i am concerned. i seriously doubt i am the only person that has DTV that was expecting a free preview week of sunday ticket only to severely let down unexpectedly today....i would wager pretty much anything that there are several million of their customers that feel exactly the same was as i do, and also would agree that you are a dick

Come on Cring, you are dealing with people that has their well-being wrapped up sports entertainment, become suicidal over political elections and throws a fit when they don't get the entitlement.
