For the first time in...I dunno...a few months I went to Solecismic's website. I swear to god I saw cobwebs there. Jim still has his 2008 draft contest from April up. It's almost five months later and it's still there.

Nothing new. He had "As we enter 2007" on his company information website until September 2007.

I hope he's busy coding another awesome game.

its really hard to take that company seriously when they can't even update their site. really makes it hard, from a customer standpoint, to say "i feel confident giving this company my money despite a website that looks like it was made in 1995 and not being updated within the last few months". yeesh, sometimes that company takes its "no news is good news" approach to the extreme. the only way i would visit that site again is if i ever wanted to take a trip down memory lane, its a nice site for nostalgia.

I think it's funny that people even visit that site. Jim gets free advertising through this board - the moment anything goes up over there or he releases a new product he gets automatic mention and accompanying sub-forum over here.

The question is, does the game in its current state work for you? There's a lot I'd like to see added to FOF but with the community and the MP leagues and the utilities everyone has done, it's still a great game for $30 even if no updates ever come out.

Part of me is a little afraid of an update breaking all the wonderful utilities we all know and love and screwing up all of our long-term game data ...

I always get a chuckle when FOFC veterans express their angst and/or complaints over the Solecismic site not being updated recently. We've seen this pattern for, oh, 10 years now. It's as if people are expecting some drastic change all of a sudden. *shurg*

Sheepishly, I do still check the Solecismic website from time-to-time. Of course, that was because I stumbled by pure chance across the "Holiday Game" sale checking the Solecismic website literally 30 minutes after he altered it.

I still believe it'll be the same old pattern. Disappears for a few months, only to reappear in Mid-November with a game release announcement. At the very least, I'm figuring on a substantial patch at that time (using pure speculation).

when you're the only game in town, yeah, there's some liberty to dig your heels into the sand and do things your way.

(un)fortunately there are other companies around making games and providing new content on their front page to give the appearance that they're still in business and still in operation. if i wasn't a part of FOFC (i know, it's scary to think of such a scenario) and i found the Solecismic site by accident today and i saw some of the things that haven't been updated, i wouldn't buy the game cuz based off of the homepage it doesn't even look like the company still operates. i'd say "this looks like a website i made in college, back in 1998, and it hasn't been updated - let me hold off on paying for a product that may or may not still be supported".

Update Scanner. It's not terribly useful in the days of RSS Feeds, but it is perfect for a site like Solecismic.com that doesn't change often, doesn't have RSS Feeds, but when it does change, I'm virtually always interested in what has changed. I track the front page and the company information page.

Solecismic Front Page...

Solecismic Software is an entertainment software company dedicated to producing cutting-edge career football simulations. We have three products available: Front Office Football (http://www.solecismic.com/fof/index.php), our professional football simulation, The College Years (http://www.solecismic.com/tcy/index.php), our college football simulation, and Up and Down the River (http://www.solecismic.com/cards/index.php), a card game.
blah, blah, blah...

We invite you to try out the free demonstration versions of both games.

I've been waiting since the card game release for that line to be updated.

I do not see the company website as all that important. I think Jim is the king of the sim engine, and as long as he puts his energy there over a website and continues to deliver games like he has, all is good.

Wait, now if TCY2 is the next game, that should be a new frontpage in celebration of this finally happening. Time may stop for just a moment, all clocks will freeze with that release.

I measure the value of entertainment by the amount of time I get out of a product. A movie costs 20 bucks plus and last tops two hours. The per hour cost of FOF for me has been fractions of a penny.

This is the first year I am not in a NFL fantasy league in 15 years, that is mainly due to FOF and the year round football fix I get from it. Could it be improved, of course, but right now it is the only game in town.

If Sierra brings back Front Page Sports Football Pro I would be worried if I was Jim, but that does not appear to be something that will happen.

FOF has replaced Championship/Football Manager as my main sports-sim addiction. It's value for money has been phenomenal for me in the 3 years I've had it.

Sure, there are things I'd change if I could. The HOF system currently irritates me. The scouting (i.e. you have one scout and that's it) could be very easily improved. In fact the whole staffing system could be vastly improved. The link between TCY and FOF could easily be changed very simply improved to make the game unmatchable.

But the point remains: the game is awesome, and no other game comes close. That's worth more to me than the dodgy website.:)

Well, I think the counter point that is that it doesn't hurt to have an appealing web-site. Is the time invested in updating the web-page of value to Jim? I can't say I know the answer to that.

I think one thing the web-site does very well is it doesn't over-hype the visual appearance of the game. The last thing anybody wants is some space-aged fancy flash driven web-site, plunk down $30 and find out the game looks kind of spread-sheety.

If anything the web-site and the games compliment each other nicely. But if Jim found the time to update his stuff, it probably wouldn't hurt.

I love the spread-sheety look. To be honest, it's close to my perfect game. :)

But I take your point, it certainly wouldn't hurt to keep the website updated. I'm not arguing against that. It probably would put doubt in my mind towards buying a game... :(

I'd rather have Jim coding a kick ass new game than update the web site. But, that's me.
