Two new episodes tomorrow night. Funniest show on TV, bar none. I am so stoked for this.
And with that in mind, I present you with:

One of my favorite scenes, unfortunately I can only find at as part of an old promo. Better in the full scene:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/e7MC6yseBGU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/e7MC6yseBGU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Then of course there's Charlie's (improv) America's song:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/841v0CfdpmA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/841v0CfdpmA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
The underage drinking episode mixed to J-Kwon's "Tipsy":
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CQ8CezJVb9U&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CQ8CezJVb9U&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The underage drinking episode was gold. I love Mac crashing prom because everyone else was invited.
But yes, the Gang Gives Back is one of my three favorites, along with the Gang Gets Invincible and Sweet Dee's dating a Retarded Person

The first episode sucked ass. The second one was ok.
Honestly I think they need to take Danny Devito off the show, that's when I started losing interest in the show. It used to be a show about stupid people who would do some stupid things, now it's a show about idiots being complete morons.
Flasch186

DeVito's character is the most consistent, in the sense that a clown popping out of jack in the box is consistent. you get a giggle the 1st time (or maybe the 2nd time if you're of a simple mind and silly things humor you), but after a bit you get tired of it cuz its the same thing every time.
Danny Devito's character is the guy who will jump in the middle of a stupid idea and want to be involved in it. he's the "hey, me too!" part of the gang. instead of being like "what a retarded idea, count me out", he's the type who, as the gang decides they want to do something stupid will show up at the last second, ask what's going on and be filled in on the plan and say "hey...cool, let's do it". then midway through there'll be an arguement in the group, he'll split off and do it with [insert Mac/Dennis/Charlie/Sweet Dee here] and take things over the top. but its the same thing over and over.
the show is entertaining, but not laugh out loud funny. i like the characters (except for DeVito's character) so i keep watching. the characters seem to have devolved into complete idiots, instead of just being the slacker losers they were before in season 1. decent show, wouldn't put it in my top 30 shows of all time or anything.

You hit the nail on the head HA. Especially that last part. The show has just about become a parody of itself and clearly jumped the shark when Danny DeVito jumped from "special guest" to a title credit.
Pyser
09-19-2008, 04:25 PM
well, it was obviously a network decision to add devito in season 2 (as evidenced by the fact that they had something like 10 days to shoot every scene he'd be in all season, then way later would go back and shoot the other side of the scene)
but also, he serves as the "bank" of the group. he has money, which plotwise, allows the gang to do their crazy shit....raiding dee's sock drawer not included.
Anthony
09-19-2008, 04:40 PM
which doesn't make sense, cuz his wife left all the money to Dennis and Dee's real life dad (the 7th Heaven dude). hence the reason Dee and DeVito had to pretend to be engaged and wanted the money to adopt kids with. wacky comedy ensued.
but he doesn't really fund all their hijinks. the only time i can think of was for the Day Man episode, where he bought the instruments (and Mac used his credit card to rent the room to wreck). otherwise, he takes the group's ideas and tries to find a way to profit from them.
Charlie is my favorite of the bunch, for the record.
Pyser
09-19-2008, 04:58 PM
thats not true at all. frank paid for the cop outfits, to fix the bar, has the drug/shady people hook-ups, etc.
he has had his own money forever, they set up that he was a businessman involved in vietnam or something. he's been divorced a long time in the show, as best i can recall

Oh, come on...it's soul...boys soul! ;)
Awesome, awesome episode. The season did feel short, probably a result of doubling up on the episodes the first couple of weeks. Still, I'd say it was a solid season. A few clunkers, sure, but also some really funny episodes and a great finale. Can't wait till next season...any chance it'll start before next September? I don't know if I can wait that long.

I thought season 3 was a step down and this year was even worse. Still some funny moments along the way, though.
Anthony basically nailed it with the "devolved into complete idiots" comment.
The first scene they ever wrote for the show was when Dennis goes up to Charlie's apartment to get a basketball and Charlie tells him he has cancer. Charlie starts crying and Dennis has to use a little finesse - he doesn't want to make a big scene or seem like a total jerk, but he really just wants to get the basketball and get out of there ASAP. The humor was in what a selfish asshole Dennis was, and that was basically the premise of the show. Think about how much more subtle that is than the Extreme Home Makeover episode where no one is behaving like a sane adult, for example. It's basically a different show.
Flasch186

we are in total agreement. even if you look at the pilot, episode 1. "Charlie is a racist" i think it was called. in that episode Charlie was a (somewhat) very normal guy. contrast that with Charlie-who-thought-he-ate-human-flesh-and-wanted-to-eat-more-of-it from this past season. completely different characters. the network loves it and the series is signed up all the way to a season 6, with all the main cast intact till at least then. but it's a completely different show than the early episodes.
if you check out the always sunny wiki, it mentions how they meant for Dee to be the straight one of the group, kinda like the voice of reason to counter the zany hijinks of the boys. yeah, that ended pretty quickly. fast forward to like season 2 where she and Dennis started shooting coke into themselves to be eligible for welfare. the last time she was a believable character was when the gang went to a high school prom and she was romanced by a younger teen. after that she became as zany as charlie.
as loopy as the show has become i tune in for charlie. none of these characters are realistic but whatever laughs i get its from Charlie.

He doesn't hurt the show, IMO. It's just a different show, as people have pointed out. I find DeVito to be consistently hilarious, but I agree with those who said they liked the show (as a whole) more during the first season, when the characters had some semblance of sanity.

According to wikipedia November 5th - List of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episodes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_It%27s_Always_Sunny_in_Philadelphia_episodes)
By the way - reading through that list there are an absurdly high number of classic episodes since mid season 3. The Nightman Cometh, kidnapping the critic, the gas crisis terrorist episode, mac's banging the waitress, cannibalism, sweet dee is dating a retard, plus the road trip and intervention this season. I don't understand the people who think it's going downhill - and I'm glad I don't know them personally, because I'd hate to salt another person again.

It appears the lull was S2 to mid S3. From S3.9 on it's pretty much all gold other than the mafia, dance, and maybe house-centric episodes.

I'm still enjoying the show. However, I will say that (like every sitcom ever) they just keep cranking up the zany factor. It's a very different show than it was a few seasons earlier. But again, I think this same complaint can be made for any sitcom that runs for a reasonable length of time.
