What a horrible call. Ball goes about two feet wide of the net, and the linesman tells the referee to allow a goal... and the referee gives it!

The league finally came out and said they won't allow the match to be replayed. I particularly like this quote: "We regret this error of judgment and will now work with the officials concerned to determine how this occurred in an attempt to minimise such mistakes in the future."
Yeah, like making sure neither of them comes within 10 miles of a soccer stadium for the rest of their lives.

In a way I feel sorry for the ref who let a senior linesman make a decision for him, but how are you paying so little attention to the action that you don't see it yourself? And not one player on the Reading team is looking for a goal, and everybody plays on, and the crowd doesn't have any reaction... unreal decision.

This I think will be the final straw that persuades FIFA to put video cameras along the goal line (not a moment too soon). Can you imagine that happening in a world cup final?

IMO the ref is more culpable than the linesman - the lino was looking along the touchline and it's plausible that he could have thought that the ball & player was between the sticks. The ref was in the field of play and should have been able to spot fairly easily that the ball was well wide of the goal.

To counter this, neither of them stopped to think why an attacking player was trying to clear the ball off the line :rolleyes: :D

Boothroyd (Watford manager) has been charged by the FA for abuse towards the referee. That's got to be the definition of salt in the wound. Hopefully this gets thrown out in the first 5 minutes, how they would expect anyone to just sit there and take that is incredible. That's the FA for you...
