Lets say you could create any type of newscast you wanted.

Who would the anchor be?

How long would the show be? (half-hour, hour, other)

What would the format of the show be?

How many interviews would there be, would it be limited to congressmen or would it include "respected" journalists as well?

Would it be limited to reporting facts or would the show try to analyze the facts with the risk of being percieved as biased?

And feel free to add anything else that would make for a good newscast.

The reason I ask is I wonder if there is a more perfect type of news out there. One that can be informative, but not be as boring as the network news or as poralizing as the big 3 cable outlets.

I'd use Brian Williams but I'd allow him a lot more freedom in his presenting of things. The man is down right hysterical and quick-witted but is unfortunately very limited in the personality he's allowed to show. I think that's the biggest problem with the network's. I'd have a point-counterpoint segment every night with some issue where both sides have equal time to present their sides, limited strictly to FACTS. They would be taped and presented as two separate clips instead of one clip where two people just yell at each other. It would be an hour long as well.

My perfect news broadcast would have my wife and Salma Hayek as the co-anchors. News anchors should be there to introduce stories, relay facts, and should not be in the business of injecting their personal feelings into the broadcast. Therefore I would select two women that would be nice to look at for an hour and about whom fantasies would be possible when they are discussing a story I don't care about.

The show would also include a separate Tim Russert (RIP) type personality that is able to interview people on both sides of every issue fairly and yet also ask tough questions. There would hopefully be an interview each day on the broadcast.

Finally, the show would have a four-person panel that took 15 minutes of each broadcast to discuss and debate that day's hottest topic. The four members would represent varying ideologies and the panel members wouldn't necessarily be the same every day. For continuity's sake, though, the ultimate goal would be to have two permanent panel members and also invite two guest panel members for each debate.

That's all I have off the top of my head.

News is like the blowhard express these days. I'm about tired of it. I think I'd first stop the shouting. Too much of that. And all of the editorializing from anchors, I'd cut that out too.

Do I have to concern myself with whether anyone else watches?

Is the question about nightly local newscasts, or is it about these shows that flail around in political shit?
