Do special teams plays help with player conditioning? I have an OLB who played 81 preseason special team plays, and 9 regular plays. In game 1 of the regular season, he played 4 regular plays and 29 ST plays. He still has significant seasonal rust. Maybe he has LB position rust, but after playing over 120 plays with over a dozen tackles, I think he should be ready to go.

He is my main gunner and gets almost all of the ST tackles, but doesn't see the field much as an LB. I just want him to be in good condition for ST.

At this rate it'll take, several more games to get in shape. I know different players shake off the rust at different rates, but I've never taken notice of how many plays it takes.

I've noticed the same thing with my special teams aces. My guess is that specials teams plays don't help deter rust.

I would expect that rust refers to the sharpness of playing their position, which special teams wouldn't really count for.

From strictly anecdotal evidence in lots and lots of seasons played, I'd have to agree.
