R.I.P.

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin' seems to fit
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'

So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleepin' on the job
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'

But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me won't defeat me
It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free
Nothin's worryin' me

It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free
Nothin's worryin' me

Great actor, great man. He raised a lot of money for charity over the years with his food line.

I just looked up his credits at imdb. The only thing I've ever seen him in is Fat Man and Little Boy, and honestly, I'm not sure I realized it was him. Still, he left a permanent mark on the film industry and somebody of his stature and poise will definitely be missed. Guess I gotta go see some of the classics.

Reggie Dunlop: Goddamn lard-ass Barkley Donaldson, I'm tellin' you he jumped us!
Steve Hanson: [nodding head] Mm huh.
Reggie Dunlop: Gloves off, stick down, no warning, he challenged the Chiefs!
Steve Hanson: Called us names!
Reggie Dunlop: Called us names! But Dave was there.
Steve Hanson: Dave's a killer!
Johnny Upton: Dave's a mess.
Reggie Dunlop: But Dave's out. Who's gonna take his place?
Ned Braden: Is the answer Jesus?
Reggie Dunlop: [looks at the Hanson brothers] Ok guys. Show us what you got.

This is something I'm not liking about getting older - seeing my childhood heroes pass away...

RIP Paul, you were one of the very best.

Fast Eddie: Fat man, you shoot a great game of pool.
Minnesota Fats: So do you, Fast Eddie.

Good one, Quik. And earlier in that scene:

Minnesota Fats: "Shoot pool, Fast Eddie.

Fast Eddie: "I'm shooting pool, Fats. When I miss,
you can shoot."

I always dug Paul Newman. He's gonna be one I miss a lot.

Not only was he a great actor, but he had that knack some actors have of turning up in great, fun movies. Part of that, of course, was his own presence, but a great movie is never just about an actor. Ole blue eyes just knew how to pick a script, it seems.

At the risk of being callous and sounding stupid again, I am curious as to the mindset of when someone misses an older actor (or musician). To me, the point when we missed the greatness of Paul Newman was when he stopped acting a couple of years ago due to health reasons, coinciding with basically retiring from his non-acting endeavors. I recall an NPR segment on this and I remembered thinking that we would not see him act again and that was sad. We knew it was a matter of time, given the widely known health issues.

As I brought up in the Richard Wright thread, I am much more sad by those who die young - the potential that is lost. With someone like Paul or Richard, we can easily celebrate the life, the films and the music that they had given us without regret.

I got to meet him at a ChampCar event in Cleveland years ago. You could just tell that he was a great guy. From a racing standpoint, it was kind of cool that he got to return to Indy this year. He will be missed.

20+ years ago my wife worked with a woman who scheduled car races at Watkins Glen and such places. She spent a lot of time on the phone when she should have been working. One day, my wife answered the phone and said the woman was at lunch. "I need to schedule this weekend's race with her," said the famous voice. ""Could you have her call Paul Newman back at 555-1313?" My wife wanted to keep the phone. She kept the number.

There's a finality to death like no other. To my knowledge, few people have come back from being dead (and I am talking rictor has set in dead, not I brought you back to life with CPR dead, apologies myself for the callousness).

As long as Newman was alive, there was always that chance, maybe he would get better and feel like taking on a not too taxing role. Maybe it would end up being his most memorable role, as unlikely as that would seem.

Point is, while he was alive, there was hope, even if you knew in your heart it was a false one. We all live with these dreams and fantasies. They get many people through otherwise dreary or mundane lives.

So when a person like this passes, it's the death of a hope, too. Yes, I could have started missing Paul Newman years ago. But I held on to hope and will only miss him now.

I see nothing wrong with choosing to hold to that hope until now, if that's what I choose to do.

To add to this, nostalgia is a powerful thing and it takes some time to develop.

Few people missed the 70's in the 80's. But more people missed the 70's in the 90's. If that helps the point or not, I'm not sure.
