Dola,
My first week actually getting to catch any of these games in the new house with the HD. Watching Redskins - Eagles right now, the Eagles (very early in so far) really look better than I expected. Westbrook looks like his ankle's doing alright.

Falcons take the opening drive and march down the field. Roddy White just carves the GB secondary up. Then they go for it on 4 on G at the half mark. Smith makes a huge gutsy call on a roll out pass that pays off. 7-0 Falcons.

Intersting stat btw: The Falcons have 42 first quarter points. The most in the NFL. Didn't think they'd lead anything in the NFL at this point of this season except points allowed. :)

I;ve been burned SO much by Mcgahee..

Finally didn't start him this week when things were completely uncertain and it looked like he might not even play, but now he's getting carries.. just the opposite of what happened in week 1.

Well that was kind of embarrassing for the 'Skins...

10-05-2008, 12:22 PM
That was one of the most embarrasing blown calls I've ever seen.

50 for the eagles blocks 50 of the skins in the back.

They call the flag.

Then they conference and say that 50 of the skins was the guy that blocked in the black. In the replay 50 of the skins is on his knees and gets plowed square in the back by 50 of the eagles.

wow.

Falcons stop the Packers with a 3 and out, then move the ball well on the ground. Norwood drops a 3rd down conversion, so they settle for a FG. 10-0 Falcons.

Great speed, great instincts, needs to learn the game. He's made some very athletic plays and has a nose for the ball, but has blown some coverage here and there. Keep in mind he only has two starts.

What'd Ronnie do?

Nothing major. He's just having a really good game so far with some big gains. 38 yards on 6 carries.

The Dolphins defense is playing really well. Not looking like the same team that Kurt Warner carved up.

The Falcons respond. A solid drive, with a very important third and long conversion, ends with a Roddy White TD.

What is amazing to me is what the Falcons are doing with Ryan. They are going no huddle, on the road, and he is calling the plays at the line. This guy is a rookie!

Pennington to Camarillo! Dolphis up 10-3.

Pennington is 9-10 for 98 yards and 1 TD so far. Ronnie Brown with a big run on 4th down to set up the TD and has 41 yards on 7 carries.

For first time in a few years i'm really enjoying watching the Dolphins today as i did past week. The Wildcat formation is working today too, even when the surprising factor is gone.

Camarillo looks to be the next Wes Welker like posession receiver, hope he won't be traded as Welker did.

Ryan made a really nice play earlier in the game. He was being c hased out of the pocker and sort of flung the ball out of bounds. I think alot of rookies would have either gone out of bounds or made an ill-advised throw on that play.

Green Bay may have the worst offensive line in football. 3rd and long and Atlanta rushes essentially 3 and Rodgers gets hurried and needs to throw to the check down. Add in the league leading holding penalties and inability to run and this OL is dreadful right now.

Sometimes I wonder if the announcers for NFL games are watching the same thing that we are.

In the Bears-Lions game, Marty Booker appears to make a catch at the Lions 1 1/2 yard line. The play gets called incomplete, but there is a pass interference penalty called at the 7 yard line.

Lovie Smith challenges the call, prior to the ruling the announcers say that it is silly to challenge the call, they already have the first down, and that they are only challenging to help their stats.

The play gets reversed, first down at the 1 1/2 yard line, and the announcers are still mentioning how they shouldn't have challenged.

Nice little bit of trickery in the Redskins/Eagles game. Handoff to Randle-El for the end around and it really looks like he's going to run it but he throws it to Cooley for a TD. Under review for past line of scrimmage but it doesn't look even close.

When's the last time you saw a coach go for it near midfield on fourth down with less than 3:00 in the game and UP by six? As NFL Head Coach would say, a "Defining Moment".

EDIT: Apparently, FOF does it 10% of the time as a default setting. Fine. Still ballsy, though.

Agreed. Unfortunately, all we'll hear about now is how Brett Favre would be 5-0 and throwing 6 TDs a game. No OL, DL, a banged up secondary. Aaron Rodgers is the least of their problems although his INT was a pretty bad throw. The Packers had a top 12 defense last year and now they give up 150 yards rushing every week. I'm still hoping they can turn it around.

Well, a couple of the resident Packer fans have already said this, but I haven't been online all day so I want to throw my opinion out there. Packers are crap right now, and the QB is the least of their problems.

Penalties from all over the team is killing them, the whole thing is starting to become funny it's so bad. The offensive line has been two solid years of "young in the middle and should be pretty good" but by now it has been to long of hearing that and they are just plain not good. The G spots are the worst, though Wells hasn't been as good at C as I had hoped since coming back from injury either.

The d-line went from a strength last year to crap this year, bravo Tammy Thompson in trading a starting DT. Can't wait to see what he does with the LBs in this next offseason since they are the best group on the defense now. Another one to blame on the GM (who I am starting to hate again after being won over some last year) is this crap punter. They cut Ryan before week one to sign this bum, and the guy has been crap ever since. Crap to the point of hurting the team.

Grant finally showed a little life today, I guess that is a positive. Rodgers was good. None of it matters though when the defense has gone to crap in one offseason and the o-line blows.

The Bengals need to fire everyone on the offensive side of the coaching staff, Including Marvin. Its really pathetic how badly coahed that side of the ball is.

And it's not like Perry hasn't had fumbling problems coming into the season. WTF?

Oh well. I will continue to watch. It's the most exciting 0-5 team ever.

I think there was an argument last week that there's no way this could be the Bengals' worst season ever. Considering the missed expectations, wasted talent, and ongoing dissonance within the team, I think it could actually be the most disappointing ever. I knew it was going to be rough with the schedule coming into the season. But not 0-5 rough.

Punting from the 37 yard line on 4th and 6... turns into a 17 yard difference. Might as well go for it.

I doubt the play calling will be any better this week, once again. Whatever gets rid of Childress the quickest though. I'd like him to be gone after tonight, that way the Vikes still have a shot at turning this season around.

This is going to be a rough game for the Saints if the Vikings continue to get all the breaks.

It's about damn time the Vikings get the breaks though.

Figures the Vikings would give up the lead eventually....lets see if they can stop the Saints punt return team and offense this time.

Make that catch, Berrian, my goodness these Vikings receivers are awful.

And WHY do they keep punting it to Bush? WTF.

I don't like the Vikings playcalling. They seem too enamored with Frerotte. Seems like every time Peterson gets stopped on 1st down, they immediately go into pass only mode. They've got to stick with Peterson and keep ramming him, especially when they had the lead.

I guess he'll live at least another week, but that was about as badly coached a win as you can get. Punting to Bush 3 times, calling double post pattern so both receivers end up in the same spot.

But damn, what a fun game.

the Vikings punter sure is "Kluwe-less" when it it comes to punting to Bush. Approx 15 yard net average for the night on 7 kicks.

I'm always eager to catch the Vikings play because of Peterson, yet every time I've watched him on TV he's been contained. :(

and just to add- f*ck you ed hockuley... missed pass interference in the endzone leads to blocked FG...missed obvious facemask leads to reggie fumble...
phantom holding on karney...

Saints didn't play great, but they should have won.

Reading about the Houston / Indy game without having actually seen it, I know everyone is picking on Sage for the mistakes, but my question is:

Up 17 with 4 minutes to go, why is the game even in his hands? I can maybe see the late pick trying to keep Indy from getting the ball back on a long 3rd down, but was he fumbling handoffs? Why was he even trying to roll out (if I read about one of the fumbles correctly)? Seriously, with a 17 point lead the coaches aren't slamming Steve Slaton, etc into the line play after play to bleed clock?

Agreed 100%. With their O-Line and Peterson's endurance (not to mention that Chester Taylor's a pretty good back as well), the Vikings should be owning opposing defenses in the 2nd half after they've had about 25 running plays blasted at them.

I honestly don't remember if the plays were on third down where they needed a bunch of yards for a first down or what. With 5 minutes left on the clock, it isn't unheard of for the Colts offense to score two touchdowns (even if they looked bad in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, they were pretty effective in the first quarter). The reason Sage is being slammed was his decisions when he did have the ball go well beyond anything that is a coaching decision.

When you are a QB, when you have a 17 point lead, when you are rolling out, when it is near the game.. you absolutely do not try to hurdle multiple defenders in an attempt to make a big gain. You protect the ball and more importantly protect your body with a slide like almost every other QB in the league does. If he pulled that stunt when down by 2 points at the goal line with the ability to possibly win the game, he would have been gutsy, heroic, etc.. Pulling it when he did is just dumb and flat out an unecessary risk, not only for losing the game but also for losing his head to the multiple defenders beelining for him.

I found myself asking the same questions, fwiw. Made no sense to have a QB rolling out and running with that big of a lead.

What shocked me is Mr. "'Tis Better to have Rushed and Lost..." complained about Rosenfel's and not the playcalling in his TMQ column today.
