If it was in Stillwater, it would be a much different situation. At Mizzou, I think that Mizzou will take care of business.

I would bold that PSU @ Wisconsin game. Wisconsin might not be ranked but Penn State hasn't beaten Wisky on the road since 2002. And Wisconsin hasn't lost two in a row at home in awhile.

Red River shootout at 12, two extremely talented but young teams breaking out a year early at 3:30, Charles Scott going into the Swamp and Dez Bryant vs. Jeremy Maclin for a nightcap. (A Red Sox/Rays playoff game in there somewhere.) Yup, don't think I'll be getting much done this Saturday.

I know Neuheisel is a bit of a controversial figure among college sports fans. You either love him (mostly just UCLA people), or you hate him (most everyone on the West Coast), or you feel he's just something bad waiting to happen (the rest of the country).

But the story above is worth reading to see a side of Slick Rick that isn't advertised too much.

(14) Utah (6-0, 2-0 MWC)
Wyoming (2-4, 0-3 MWC)

This is going to be a great game with a lot of attitude coming from the Wyoming side and it is being played at Laramie and the snow has already hit.

Utah ran up the score last season, even doing an onsides kick in the 4th with them way ahead to where it prompted Joe Glenn giving Kyle the one finger salute.

As for BYU, they welcome New Mexico into Provo. It should be a win, but based on the way they played Utah State, who knows.

I'm seriously torn about it, really. Reluctantly, I'd lean towards ND, just because I don't think I could stand it if I had to hear about how great Carolina is from the fans and the press around here. If there were a positive to Carolina winning, is that it increases the odds that Butch will leave after this year after proving his college coaching credentials and Carolina will sink back into oblivion again. Then again, as much as I would dislike the local media fawning over Carolina if they win, I'm not sure I would like the national media doing the same thing for ND if they win. :banghead:

The two most dangerous sports jobs in football: Raiders head coach and a cordinator for Tommy Tubberville.

I like Tommy, and he has definitely been good for Auburn. But there is no one who'll throw a coach under a bus faster than Tubberville.

They have to realize that a long term commitment is required to switch to that offense. There were some Mizzou fans who wanted to boot Pinkel after the first two years of the spread offense flopped. Most of us are now quite glad they waited it out.

Exactly. I'm actually quite pleased with the patience being shown to Petrino in a very similar situation. Things are obviously not going swimmingly in our situation at Arkansas, but we know that it will take some time and are willing to wait it out because we are convinced that the results will be fantastic if we do.

I think Auburn is making a big mistake, actually, and it might hurt them in the short term as well as not paying off in the long term.

Tommy should have known that, and never tried this in the first place. Auburn is not a place that has patience, especially with a "pass first" attack that would not be popular with the fans.

Better than staying home & watching you-know-who vs you-know-who ;)

In all seriousness though, it was kind of a spur of the moment thing today.
I got a discount-seats-available email from the mailing list, was curious, and realized that it was as good a chance to surprise my son with something unexpected on the cheap as I was going to get. And he had been bumming that we weren't going to the HS game this week because it's hell to drive from here to Cobb Co. on a Friday night for a game that ought to be a blowout well before halftime. Realizing, for the first time because I just never thought about it before, that my dad had never been to a game at Grant Field in spite of lifelong fan support of GT kind of sealed it as something that needed to be done. The 4th ticket is for my niece, who could care less about the game but wasn't going to miss a chance to see a college band - any college band - do their halftime show. (she's a HS trumpet player hoping to make drum major next year as a senior)

I took my grandfather and father to a college football game a year ago. Grandfather hadn't been to a college football game in 50 years. He had a blast. Great stuff. You'll have a good time with all three generations going to the game.

What do you think of their defense?

Mizzou's defense is just fine, though it seems to be your personal crusade to bad-mouth it any chance you get. Outside of the 2nd half of the Illinois game where our backup CB got torched several times, the defense has played just fine. With our offensive firepower, it's likely we'll win if the defense holds the other team to 30 points or less. Oklahoma State is a very good test for our defense. I'm pretty sure that they'll come out just fine.

I suppose that the main consolation for most Mizzou fans would be that Lee Corso agrees with you. That likely means you're dead wrong.

MizzouRah

When you run the spread offense, your defense is out on the field much more than if you ran another offense.

I used to think it was average. But then I saw the time of possession. The defense is on the field much more then the offense. Plus, why do you need a defense when your team is averaging 53+ points a game?
I am by no means a Missouri fan. I still think they are punks for bailing out on the Iowa contract to play Sister Mary's School of the Blind (which I believe they lost to). But, man, the speed of this team is unreal.

AMHERST, Mass.—A tailgater skinny dipping inside a truck bed at a University of Massachusetts football game has been charged with assault for allegedly kneeing a campus police officer in the groin after being told to get out of the water.

Deputy Chief Patrick Archbald said 21-year-old Marshal D.P. Keating of Edgewater, N.J., was among several fans splashing around in the back of a pickup truck before Saturday's game against the University of Delaware.
When police told them to stop, Keating initially refused to get out. Archbald says he then approached the officer and kneed him twice in the groin.
The officer, whom Archbald did not name, was given morphine at a hospital. He could miss up to two weeks of work.
Keating is charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

If I didn't say it here, then I said it somewhere else... I figured Clemson would lose last night, then run the table. They'll finish a game out of the top of the ACC yet again, but they'll finish well enough to save Tommy Bowden's job yet again.

Clemson is possibly the worst coached team in major college football. Well, they could at least give Tennessee a run for its money.

Just as a follow up, here's my prediction of the Vandy season from here out. Vandy will win one, but only one, of these games (UGA, Florida, Tennessee, Wake Forest). Common sense would say Tennessee, but I think it might actually be Wake.

Vandy will lose at least one of these games (Miss State, Duke, Kentucky). Kentucky is the most likely loss, but Miss State wouldn't be a surprise.

Vandy has had a great season, the best they've had in 50 years. But they are still Vandy, and lack of depth will evetually kill them.

It'll be close. Assuming MU/LSU wins, all 4 teams should be getting #1 votes, and it sets up two great showdown games.

Only potentially bad scenario developing now is Oklahoma will now be sitting in the seat where they could easily jump ahead of one of the two Big12 champs into the BCS just because that team loses in the Championship game.

Now UGA has only a six-point lead on the "cupcake." 13-7. And they lost yet another OL starter.

I'm still wondering how anyone that knows football would have had this team at number 1. We have a very mediocre O-line that now have lost two starters, and a very mediocre D-line that lost it's captain in the first game. The SEC media had it right when they said UGA would finish 3rd on their side of the conference. It would be really sad if they finshed third to Florida and Vandy.

People already bring up the fact that they lost so much talent, but yet USC lost a ton more and everybody expects them to be good. Michigan has lost this kind of talent before and yet they could at least put a 7 win season together. Toledo was one of the wins I was looking at if they were to get 4. With PSU and MSU up next and OSU still lurking, we can pretty much assume an under .500 seaon is in the making.

He has to bring in a stellar class and if it includes a new QB, he'll get a grace period of a year with the hope of the turn around happening. After that, I don't think even 8 wins is going to be deemed acceptable.

As a Gopher fan I really think you'll be ok. I didn't think they'd be as bad as they were last year, and I really didn't think they had any chance of starting 6-1 this year. Brewster didn't have anywhere near the overall talent that Rich Rod does or the same draw for talent that Michigan has. Honestly I see Michigan being the class of the Big Ten in the next few years.

As for todays game, great win over Illinois for the Gophers. With a roster that only has 2 good options at CB, I knew there would be problems containing the passing game. They made some great plays on D to keep Illinois to 20 with as many yards as they gained. Couldn't have won without the things the defense did, especially with how well the Illini managed to keep Decker in check. Will be interesting to see how the rest plays out from here, 6-1 and this was by far the best team on the 2nd half of their schedule. To come up with a road win shows how incredibly far Brewster has brought them from last year.

Jackets hold on to beat Gardner Webb 10-7. Playing their 3rd and 4th string quarterback, they couldn't get anything going offensively. I think they only had 2 first downs in the second half.

That had to be the ugliest offensive performance I've seen (minus 1 play) in my 41+ years of breathing air.

The offensive line was just that - offensive - I don't know whether we decided to play the 3rd & 4th string there too or if they don't like Booker or what, but they didn't show up all day. Yeah, Booker looked to have about as much business trying to run the option as I would have but he got zero help from anybody on his unit except for Dwyer's catch-and-run.

The defense showed up for work & then some, thank God. About the only bright side from this near debacle might be that Clemson certainly won't get much help from studying the game film. If they watch this, they'll be so busy laughing that it might actually do them harm.

Meanwhile, props to Vegas Vic and (I think it was) GrantDawg who called the Vandy loss ahead of time. I wouldn't have believed it, not for a second, which is why I don't bet college football.

Just finished blasting through the recording and can safely say that game should've been nowhere near a 3 point game. Arkansas should've won by 30. I didn't see the stats at the end, but the total yards have to have been something like 500 to 150 or so. Only repeated silly mistakes and miracles by Auburn kept them in the game. Once we stop giving gifts like that we are going to be a good team. When we upgrade the talent significantly over the next few years, we will be very good. I'm extremely excited.

I'm still going through all the stages of grief from last night's game ... it took me until well after midnight before I could finally summon the motivation to drive back to KC.

It was disappointing to see Missouri make so many mistakes but we didn't beat ourselves -- OSU won the game, and they are a fine football team. I don't think last night was a fluke, and I believe they may well be on or near the tier with OU, Texas and MU. OSU won the line of scrimmage -- they ran well, stopped our run and pressured Chase while we didn't get sustained pressure on Robinson. However, it was a close game that hinged on any number of plays that could gone either direction and most of those plays went OSU's way.

I would not have said MU was the best team in the Big 12 heading into last night -- in my book it's OU until somebody supplants them. If Texas beats us next weekend, I'll put Texas at the head of the Big 12.

What perplexes me about MU is the pass defense. We lost one senior off the team that finished the season last year and I just don't think Terrell is the difference. No doubt William Moore is having a horrible season compared to last year, but so is the entire defensive backfield. I have no idea how both the corner and saftey both blew coverage on Davis' first TD catch. Maybe the pass defense was this bad last year but simply no one realized it and took the shots downfield. Ever since Illinois beat us with corner routes and fades in week one, everyone has been challenging us deep and hitting them.

I'm still stuck on the fourth-and-goal inside the one on the first drive ... a year ago, Pinkle goes for that TD, and if we get it I think we win the game. But Pinkle is "too nice" -- he's worried about running up scores and I think he passed on the TD because he thought MU was going to put 52 on OSU. It was classic overconfidence. I hope he gets over it quickly.

We'll see what happens in Austin. If we run the table, we can still get in the title picture with some help from the SEC and Big 10 and some dog knocking off USC again.

Texas beat OU, so they're the best team in the Big XII right now. They deserve that respect, and they've earned it. It's not easy to attain the #1 ranking, and they are going to find out that staying ranked #1 is even tougher than getting there.

There's no way that's the reason he didn't go for the TD.

Sure there is and most every sports talk radio host is speculating the same thing.

If a coach is worried about running up the score on their first drive, that is a sign that they took the preparation for the upcoming game way too lightly.

It's an accepted practice (from both sides of a blowout) that anything goes in the first half. There is simply no way that Pinkel is that stupid to allow for that much overconfidence. You can't build a program being worried about the other teams feelings on the first drive of the game.

It is far more likely that he tightened up because now he has something to lose. When Mizzou was trying to make a name for themselves, going for it in that situation is how you do it. When you've made a name for yourself, kicking it is how you keep it.

Still waiting for MBBF to post.

I'm guessing you missed the fact that I already posted that I would be in Vegas all weekend. You'll accept my apology that I didn't geek out badly enough to track down a computer at the Venetian to satisfy your need for my post. :)

Certainly, nothing I said was incorrect in the posts that I made. I stated that Mizzou's defense was not as bad as people made it out to be, especially the silly claims from Vegas Vic. I said that we should beat just about anyone if we held a team under 30 points. We held a very good team under 30 points on Saturday. Unfortunately, Chase just totally lost his head. That doesn't happen very often, yet it happened multiple times on Saturday. Take it for what it's worth. It sucks that if he would have just tossed any of those 3 interceptions out of bounds like he should have, we would have likely won.

With that said, this season is setting up remarkably similar to last year IF Mizzou can beat Texas next week. We have a very easy schedule after this next game down the home stretch and have the B12 Championship in our backyard. Mizzou still has a very good chance at getting to the National Championship thanks to the strength of the Big 12 conference and the relative weakness of the North teams.

So you went from Mizzou being better then OU and Texas to IF they can beat Texas?

It's my attempt at modesty in order to pacify Vegas Vic's need to slam anyone with a whiff of confidence.
