View Full Version : How a play is selected

So i was pretty sure I knew how a play was selected... it goes to your gameplan and rolls run/SPass/LPass, picks a formation, picks a play (from those listed in the SP playcalling screen), runs play.
Now I'm sure that isn't it, I'm sure it picks a formation FIRST (why?) then rolls, then picks a play.
I started messing around with a Spread offense after the thread was started here and fired up my SP career (with my base offense I use in MP) and simply changed the formtaion %s and started simming seasons. My passing attempts went thru the roof while runs dropped off the face of the earth. This happened each test sim and were completely different from the previsous 60+ years of average pass and rush attempts.
Thoughts?

Yup. I think I posted about this a while back. I'm fairly certain it's specific to the 5WR, and I *think* there's a correlation to your QBs scramble frequency. If you really want to see it at work, draft a really good offensive unit with a QB who knows 5WR. Set them to use 5WR 100% of the time, but with a run-oriented game plan. The QB won't run it. He'll throw it. Even in games in which you overcome the familiars and win, you'll throw 80-100% of the time. But then if you use 4WR and a heavy run game plan, it will try to run a bunch, but with the RB.

If you think about it though, that makes sense. You have varying formations to choose from based on the situation which is set in your offensive game plan, not based on the actual play type (run/pass) being called. So if you put 100% 5 WR for extreme running situations, it probably has a cap on the frequency of QB sneaks, meaning you're going to get mostly pass plays in spite of the high run play setting. The 4WR set has a RB so your run frequency would still be considered with that formation.

It may make sense, but it means you don't control the run/pass balance in the Basic Offensive Gameplan screen... unless the poster formerly known as Skydog is right and this only happens with the 5WR formation.

That's what I'm saying though, that does make sense that there's a cap on the number of times a QB sneak or end around will be run, otherwise all the other formations have someone that can run the ball - so you do control the run/pass balance unless you put in a 5-WR set at high frequency in running situations.
But I sort of see your point, if you have a 10% run in certain situations and have 75% 5-WR set in that situation, choosing the 5-WR set eliminates the 10% run possibility. But to me this complaint is almost a case of doing something illogical in order to break the game engine ;)

Its not just with 5 WR

What others then? I tried it with 4WR, and got percentages that seemed to match up. Are there some less obvious ones? (Trips, maybe?)
So... let's say it picks a short pass, 3 WR Weak formation.
But, for short passes, you have it set 0-0-100.
Does that mean it will only pick from:
RB Cross 7
FB Out 7
FL2 Slant 7, RB Curl 2
FL Cross 7
FL Curl 7, RB Left Screen
FL Out 7, FL2 Cross 7
SE Slant 7
SE Curl 7, FB Right Screen
And remove all the screen passes and shorter routes?

What I did was with all 3 WR, 4WR and 5WR formations. I made them all 20.0 (my QB doesn't know 4WR but knows all the others) and my passes per season went from 400ish to 600+ per season
