1995 offseason

Retirements

We start each year with a look at the retirement list. And as we may have feared, Roger Pritchett has decided he’s had enough. Probably fair of him – he comes off a season where he watched his understudy explode onto the league scene, but Roger showed everyone he was still getting it done when he was called upon late in the season to provide some leadership. An excellent career, and he’s one of those guys we’re glad to have gotten a ring. Way to go Roger!

Staff and Financial Decisions

Both our coach and scout remain under contract, and we have little reason to complain with either one. Both are young and good – and the team is playing well. No worries.

Financially, we dropped slightly back into the red this year, losing about $6.5 million. Our bonuses went up over $50 million, though, so part of that is illusory. No need to panic – we are doing pretty well on the books, as well as on the field.

We make a modest increase in ticket prices, keeping well below the nearest teams, and among the lowest in the nation. (I use Tijuana as a benchmark, theirs are very low)

Free agency situation

We may not use the franchise tag, since we used it last year on SS Donnie Bridgeman, and apparently the game enforces some weird rule that even though we have since re-worked a long term deal with him, he still essentially carries the tag. (I’ve heard people argue that this mirrors real life, I’m suspicions myself…) Regardless, it’s not an option for us this year – even if we wanted to, which I don’t know about.

As it stands, we have 37 players signed to contracts, and seven picks in the coming draft. That leaves us with nine real holes to fill, plus an additional seven rookie invitees to camp. We have $41.84m in cap room, with our draft expected to cost us $11.9 million – so we have something like $30 million to spend to fill those 9+7 spots. Fine.

Under our rules, we are obliged to make a contract offer to players who are fan favorites or idolized, and are the most popular player on the team at their position. For this year, that means we are compelled to put in the following offers:

MLB Lonnie Bell – 2yr, $6.3m, $3.1m this year
LT Hardy Woolridge – 3yr, $8.4m, $2.3m this year

Not too bad, after all – assuming we get them back, which seems very likely. Woolridge suffered a major injury, but at least he’s still a serviceable backup. Bell has just eroded from his once-solid self, and is now reserve material. And in both cases, let’s remember, they are coming out of much fatter contracts – so we are getting cap relief compared to last season, even if we re-sign them at these new deals.

Among our players now testing the free agent waters is 5th year CB Irv Boyd. He has been solid for us, as a former first round pick, but he will now cost us some $10 million this year and up after that, if we are to re-sign him. This may challenge the nature of our commitment to the CB position.

So, without further ado, I will post the files for updating, and we can look at all this together, and start formulating an offseason plan.

Oh god... look at Crawford. time to find an Idolized RB immediately.

EDIT: ugh, his popularity is a 98, it'll be tough to top.. :( At least he'll be cheap in 3 years.

Well, it seems to me that our main need areas are:

Left tackle (we’re now basically void there)
Running back (complement or backup to Biggs)
Cornerback (we might get by with our current starters, I guess)
Center (either re-sign Kramer :gulp: or else find someone to start)
Defensive tackle (could use improvement at starter, plus security past this year)
Defensive End (We could use more quality and depth than we have)
Kicker (Covington is asking for pretty big money)

QuikSand
03-22-2003, 12:27 PM
Some fairly affordable free agents worth a look:

LG John Webb – at the very least, a solid 6th lineman
C Leo Johnstone – same thing, possible starter at center even
LT Lenny Bradley – cheap option at left tackle, perhaps
CB Wally Peterson – wants minsal, some reasonable skills

While T Tracy Pederson is no superstar, he is another cheap possibility at left tackle for us. He is a bit run-inclined (no longer in real keeping with our team philosophy) but still is passable.

At safety, I see that we started Richie Beyer all last year, but at this point, it seems that young Jerald Brooks might be a batter fit. However, there are a number of free agents who might work into the picture as well – like Melvin Houston (f we want to spend some real money) or Bubba Nichols (if we want to go cheap).

I second the thoughts about taking a look at G John Webb and FS Bubba Nichols. They seem like pretty soild values. Making some moves like that could help us use cash to go after 1 real impact player.

Looking at the draft....
LT- It appears to be fairly week at this position, we have the # 7 pick in the 2nd round and I could see a guy like Tyrus Bensen being there, and being a solid pickup.
RB- Oh lord Crawford is horrible now....eh...That salary is gonna hurt us...In the draft if a player like TJ Aguillera fell to us at # 31, we should think about picking him, but I doubt he will last that long...after the top 2 guys in this class it isn't t hat strong, I have seen much better...I am not sure what we should do here.
CB- If one of the top 3 falls to us at # 10 I think we should pick one of them, Blaine Houston looks like he would be a great fit in our defense. (I am assuming we are letting Irv Boyd leave?)
C- this appears to be a 'normal' looking draft at this position, a guy like Mercury de Leon might be a good pickup in the 3rd round, if we don't sign someone in FA.
DT- I am gonna let prime handle this at DE, he is much better at spotting talent here than I am...one thing is though we need to be very careful when drafting a DT, I noticed quite a few guys who are to small to be moved to another DT position.
DE- Same thing as DT
K- I think we should look to FA to find our guy.

My inclination is that we probably do have sufficient cap space this year to pursue one star-caliber player. If we book the contracts for our fan favorites at $5.4, that still leaves us with $25 million for 14 open spots. Assuming that the last 7 of those wil only costs us a total of something like $4m, that calculates to around $21 million for 7 slots. If we figure veteran minsal is average for five of those - maybe $1m each - that gets us to $16 milion left for two players. In my mind, that could easily be a $10 million impact signing, plus another $5m or so to spend on a solid player, or else distribute among a few minor upgrades in several places (up those $1m guys to $2m guys, that sort of thing).

So, I'm thinking that our cap plan for this year can, and probably should, include one solid free agent acquisition. For those of you looking at potential signings, let's keep that in mind - nobody has to be off the table.

QuikSand

I'd like to go after a monster DT (would be a good fit for our system and upcoming needs) and I think DT Karl Sinard might be the right guy. He plays on the left side, which means we'd have to move Clifton Ramsey back to the right side - where he actually has more experience (he will benefit from teh move).

Sinard can probably be gotten fomr something like $10-11 million a year.

The twist here is that Clifton Ramsey is:

a) up for a new contract next year;
b) asking for a huge truckload of money already; and
c) a fan favorite.

So, it looks like we will have little choice but to pursue him at some godawful sum... which we may need to plan for here a bit.

Maybe if we go after a big-time free agent, we only offer a one year deal? Consider this: we sign a guy like Sinard to a deal for 1yr, $12 million. Next year, we have both Sinard and Ramsey to deal with, and we probably can only sign one of them... but since they are both our own free agents, we work the market. If we get outbid on Ramsey, we put in a bid for Sinard. If not, we probably don't.

Mostly just thinking out loud here... but for right now, if we want to spend up to the cap, maybe Sinard is the best guy to go after.

At LT I like Irving Armstrong a lot as a free agent.

The G John Webb that cthomer mentioned also looks good to me. Also, C Leo Johnstone is decent looking as well. I wouldn't mind keeping our options open with our backup center Donovan Jackson as well.

Also, RT Bryan Fassero might also be a decent backup.

Edit: All these guys are cheap, always a good thing. ;)

Since we hold the #10 pick overall, I thought I'd toss out a few possible directions to go with that pick, if they come to pass.

CB Blaine Houston looks like a good fit, at a need area. He should develop intoa dominant zone defender, and good all-around player.

LT Jeffrey Del Greco is probably the best at that position, also one of serious need. Some possible doubt about his development, but I'd be optimistic. He should be a stellar pass blocker. If not, I do see several LT prospects who should be there at #31 or #42 - I'd be optimistic we could get a starter in this draft, if we so desire.

Quik,

Do you like DT Sinard more than DT Hammontree just because of the salary difference? Or do you see something else in the ratings that makes you like Sinard more?

primelord
03-22-2003, 10:47 PM
Another guy who is interesting at a need position is LCB Joel Chan. He is a guy we considered drafting and has developed quite nicely. His skills are perfect for our system and despite being better than Irv Boyd he is actually looking for a good deal less money. The amount of money he is looking for is very reasonable compared to the top CB's in the league. Is there anyway we could make a push for him and a stud DT.

I know we may be able to get a guy like Houston in the draft, but Chan is already ready for primetime. Just something to think about.

Actually, primelord, I'm following your lead here. While my usual inclination is to look for run stoopers at DT, you have previously (and properly) indicated that in our defensive scheme, we need get maximum QB pressure from our front four, meaning that the tackles need to be in on the act.

In Sinard, I see a guy whose lkast two seaons marked 5.6 and 5.8 in PRPct, which are pretty solid for a DT. He posted 12.5 sacks last year, showing that given full playing time, he can definitely contribute to the pass rush. He's certainly adequatre against the run as well.

Hammontree seems to be somewhat more balanced, but as is often true in this game, balance often means mediocity. Look at his PRPct ratings - he averages 3.2 over the last three years of full-time play. He might be a bit better against the run, but it seems like we give up a lot against the pass with him.

So, overall, for our system, I think Sinard is the best fit. He'd be able to start full time, and should help with pass pressure as well as overall play on the line - he'd be a monstrous upgrade over what we have, and is far better than anyone I see in this draft.

Affording a DT and a CB from free agency, probably totaling $18-20 million between them, would clearly cause us serious hardship - both immediately and especially on the future. Looking to next season, we'll have a huge contract demand from DT Ramsey, and will need to offer one to DT Hammond as well. Tough to say how big a crisis we'd be in, but two major escvalating contracts wouuld certainly make things tougher.

Bee, what is our plan for this year at LG? I see we went with Penick there last year - is he going to start again? ARe you happy about that?

There may be an opportunity to upgrade there via free agency - and at the same time save money, by cutting Penick and signing a FA. Please check it out, from your perspective. I'd like to take the cut there if we can still feel good about what's on the field.

Quik,

Your thoughts on Sinard sound good to me. I agree we should go after him. I understand if we can't go after both a DT and CB. And it probably wouldn't make much sense since there may be a guy perfect for us available at our first draft pick.

Just to float another thought out there is it possible to pursue a 1 year deal with Chan? He isn't a fan favorite so the financial burden would be limited to one season and then if we took Houston he could take over the following year. That may not be the best way to sepnd our money, and I won't be terribly disappointed if we do go that route. It was just something I wanted to throw out there.

If we can pick up Webb I have no problems letting Penick go. Actually, I have no problems letting Penick go immediately, since I would guess Gaines will still be available after free agency if we are unable to sign Webb for some reason.

primelord, if we want to offer a one year deal to CB Chan, it's going to cost us something like $11 million just to get him to accept. That looks awfully steep to me - and rather tough to afford.

I understand your interests in getting him - I agree he'd be a great fit - but it would take an awful lot of work to do so. Stay tuned.

QuikSand

At the moment, I have the following offers pending for the first week of free agency:

C Johnstone - 2yrs, $2.5m
G Webb - 2yrs, $2.8m
T Woolridge - 3yrs, $8.4m
DT Sinard - 1yr, $12m
LB Bell - 3yr, $6.3m
S Nichols - 3yr, $5.8m

If we got all these guys, we'd have some decent depth at safety, some decent options at the OL, and a new star addition to our defensive line.

I don't have any idea how likely it would be to get DT Sinard this way - I'm just guessing with the $12m offer - dunno how he'll feel about 1yr/$12m versus, say, 5yrs/$55m... any thoughts?

QuikSand
03-23-2003, 12:13 PM
I've added a cheap offer to young CB Leslie Cobbs - a decent guy who could serve for a year or two as our #4 or #5 corner, if needed. No risk - two year minsal deal.

Hi Guys, hope its ok if I join in?

If you are going to draft a tacle which is a bit of gamble in any round, I would look to sign this guy as a bridge starter or solid backup. He can be had for about 2 mill/Year including bonus.

Not great but cheap and solid.

It looks like the team needs a solid backup at MLB. take a look at this player. good potential against the run and possibly a great pass rusher.

he comes with the virtue of being a thrifty pick.

Again a busy weekend for me.. I agree with all talk on the offensive side of the ball.. we seem to have moved to more of a passing offense, so Crawfords slide isn't as big of a hit as it could have been... on that note though, it would be nice tog et someon ein the draft that can step in to spell Biggs... McAfee did his part, but a more solid answer incase of injury would be nice..

strait8, we're glad to have you checking in. I wonder about MLB - we probably will end up re-signing our old man former starter Lonnie Bell, which would give us a passable backup MLB. The guy you noted there is decent, but a little weak in zone coverage - which our defensive scheme uses very heavily.

Bee, what do you think of this guy Armstrong at tackle? There are a fair number of decent cheap guys out there... Armstrong is solid, but not great against the pass. Do you think we shoud pursue someone to play LT?

primelord
03-23-2003, 06:32 PM
Assuming we land Sinard, Bell, and we get our CB in the draft then we still probably need a little depth at DE and at WLB.

A guy like WLB Edward Pearson may make some sense as a backup. He is only looking for 4.5 Mil over 2 years and has put up pretty decent numbers when he has had playing time. Thenw e could look for some depth at DE in the draft.

primelord
03-23-2003, 06:34 PM
Dola,

We could also look at bringing Donnell Wilkerson back. He still has pretty decent ratings and is looking for a cheap contract. We could either move him back to WLB (I am sure he has a lot more experience at that position so he should make the switch easily) or we could shift Peabody over to WLB.

QuikSand
03-23-2003, 08:21 PM
Hmmm... I kinda like the idea of bringing back Wilkerson. He's still very strong against the run, and solid in coverage. Good fit for our system, and not asking for much money. I've put in an offer at his initial request.

QuikSand
03-23-2003, 08:23 PM
I have also added a bid for T Irving Armstrong - he'll be a backup plan in case we don't get a ready-to-go tackle in the draft (as we hope to).

Free Agency

We have a reasonable set of target players in free agency this year – if we land everyone, we will probably fill up all our cap room (maybe a little bit more). But our team comes into this season fairly intact – we’re not really falling apart.

After the first week, we have the top pending offer to each and every one of our pursuits – that’s a good sign. Even with DT Sinard, where I half expected a battle, we have the only offer on the table to him.

However, in week three, there’s bad news. Pensacola has signed C Rondell Kramer, our former starter inside. And in addition, they have put a good offer up for DT Karl Sinard, making our pursuit there less likely to pan out.

It takes until week six to untangle, but eventually DT Karl Sinard chooses our one-year deal for $12 million ahead of Pensacola’s 5-year offer for $51. I guess that worked out well, then.

I release G Andre Penick from our squad, in order to make a little cap room. C Leo Johnston is the last FA to sign with us, in week 10. That wraps everything up – once again, we got all our pursuits.

Here we are with $17m in cap room, meaning just over $5m after we settle up with our draft picks. That should be fine – I’m already eyeing up a new deal with QB Benjamin Newton, who looks like he’ll be our backup this season.

Rookie Draft

We have four early picks this year – at 10, 31, 39, and 63. That should net us several players who can help right away. Our top need spots seem to be CB and LT in some order – I see CB Blaine Houston as our top pursuit with this early selection, if he’s available.

1. Manhattan - Rachmaninoff, Tim, RB, Utah
2. Norfolk - McGregor, Harris, WR, California
3. Fort Knox - Keith, Jake, T, Mississippi State
4. Tijuana - Kerr, Thurman, CB, Wisconsin
5. Ypsilanti - Del Greco, Jeffrey, T, Kansas State
6. Tulsa - Preece, Carl, DT, Fordham
7. Niagara Falls - Londerville, Michael, WR, Arizona State
8. Death Valley - Morton, Al, DE, Southern University
9. Champaign - Perreault, Cris, DT, Illinois

Personally, I saw LT Jeffrey Del Greco as the other contender for this pick – so in my mind, I know where I want to go. I’ll stop the progress here, and we’ll let everyone have a look before we collectively leap.

Okay, here is the draft so far:

10. Little Rock - Houston, Blaine, CB, Boston College

11. Thunder Bay - Aguillard, T.J., RB, Duke
12. Nashua - Kirk, Jerry, CB, Michigan
13. Napa Valley - Bourne, Brock, T, Arizona
14. Providence - Woodworth, Quentin, DE, Bucknell
15. Memphis - Doyle, Luke, QB, Northern Arizona
16. Key West - Wells, Marvin, G, St. Peter's, NJ.
17. Athens - Benson, Tyrus, T, Rutgers
18. Hawk Mountain - Damico, Craig, T, Texas Tech
19. Mazatlan - Stephens, J.J., DE, Illinois
20. Cheyenne - Lincoln, Vinny, WR, Wisconsin
21. Providence - Newsome, Ethan, T, Tulane
22. Wheeling - Sutter, Cris, DE, Arizona State
23. Fort Wayne - Johnston, George, T, Vanderbilt
24. Pensacola - Dixon, Jason, OLB, Notre Dame
25. Cheyenne - Ramczyk, Alvin, CB, Tulane
26. Bermuda - Rickard, Lewis, G, Virginia
27. Sacramento - Stroup, Tommy, TE, Boston College
28. Louisville - Crichton, Nick, T, UCLA
29. Key West - Sizemore, Timothy, QB, Duke
30. Sault Ste. Marie - Johnstone, Adrian, T, Notre Dame

The OT pickings have really thinned out at this point... if we want a future starter, we probably have to pick now, and settle for what's here. Otherwise, we try to get by for a year, and do better next time. Best guys left seem to be Cedric McGee and Rodney Everett - both of whom look like really nice third round picks to me.

But there aren't a lot of tempting options elsewhere, as I see it... there are several solid receivers, but past that I don't see much to love out there.

QuikSand
03-24-2003, 09:39 AM
Well, with two tackles left on the board, not much else that looks too appetizing, and another pick coming up pretty shortly... do we want to again put on the table the idea of trading up to get an additional first rounder next season?

Your GM has been on the phone already...Fort Knox, who holds pick #3 this year, will accept our immediate pick, plus next year's 4th and 5th, in exchange for their #1 next year.

So, we accept the deal with Fort Knox, and gain an extra pick in next year's draft - hopefully another top ten pick, as we've gotten this way before. The draft unfolds more or less in our favor:

31. Fort Knox - Cox, Kim, T, Temple
32. Texarkana - Schrock, Andrew, DE, Texas - El Paso
33. Manhattan - Briggs, Vernon, G, Middle Tenn. St.
34. Norfolk - Londerville, Greg, G, Minnesota - Duluth
35. Fort Knox - Field, Alfred, WR, Western Kentucky
36. Tijuana - Sanderson, Charles, DE, Arizona
37. Ypsilanti - Hopper, Leslie, T, Maryland
38. Tulsa - Lowe, Randall, S, Michigan State
39. Little Rock - McGee, Cedric, T, Southern California
40. Napa Valley - Beamon, Bucky, DE, Wake Forest
41. Champaign - Rice, Randy, DE, South Carolina
42. Ocean City - Money, Cole, G, Oregon State
43. Kitty Hawk - Stamps, Max, DE, Appalachian State
44. Nashua - Avery, Dixon, WR, Kentucky
45. Napa Valley - Waldron, Vinny, T, Alabama
46. Lake Erie - Barrere, Jeffrey, OLB, Oklahoma
47. Memphis - Fletcher, Harris, DT, Stanford
48. Puget Sound - Alexander, Corey, S, Brigham Young
49. Athens - Goodin, Stan, CB, Texas A&M
50. Hawk Mountain - Mueller, Scottie, G, Michigan State
51. Mazatlan - Kornblatt, Rusty, DT, Syracuse
52. Thunder Bay - Arnett, Jeffrey, ILB, Notre Dame
53. Providence - Doelle, Harvey, TE, Murray State
54. Fort Wayne - Donovan, Hardy, QB, Tennessee
55. Fort Wayne - Bookout, Nicky, ILB, Ball State
56. Pensacola - Deese, Ralph, QB, Michigan State
57. Cheyenne - Huffman, Heath, S, Oregon
58. Bermuda - Clinton, Neil, QB, Mansfield
59. Sacramento - Coakley, Howard, WR, Oregon
60. Louisville - Malone, Joe, OLB, UCLA
61. Key West - Bush, Jamie, DT, Missouri
62. Sault Ste. Marie - Newsome, Graham, DT, Auburn

That brings us to our late second round pick... seems like a good point to stop, and solicit thoughts and input.

On my list of "hold your nose and take 'em" picks here are:

TE K.C. Newhart
LB Randall Diable (lousy zone rating, otherwise very solid)
G Derek Lofton
DT Calvin Loshbaugh (upside?)
WR Martin Ward (returner, plus decent reserve wideout)
WR Karl Dockery (anticipating next year's need for WR)
DE Shaun FLick (maybe some upside?)
S Ted Knight (might switch to corner, good zone skills)
LB Jermaine Joseph (upside?)
LT Rodney Everett (upside - but just picked there)
LB Randall harmon (mtm void not a major issue for us)
RT Alex Weatherspoon

These are mostly guys I'd like to be grabbing in about round four or five of a given draft, but that seems to be the "cream of the crap" where we are now.

Just a quick note on the WRs... What we keep depends on what we get... if we don't get a solid SE, we may want to make a push to keep one that we have (probably McAlister, due to his past skills and we already pay him big bucks so it wouldn't really affect our salary cap)... Unless we get a stud RB, we could be hurting losing ALL of these guys at WR..

wade moore

If we're going to get a wideout, I would lean towards one that is more of a contributor as a receiver than a returner at this point.. I would have a hard time keeping Ward on our roster this year with all of the other guys we have... Dockery I could find more of an argument for, although he is still obviously quite lacking compared to our current options..

Of this group, I would go with Derek Lofton. LG is a relatively weak position for us, and I would like to see us infuse more youth into the line... He is balanced and a very strong blocker already, I wouldn't even mind seeing him get playing time this year..

On the defensive side of the ball I kind of like SILB Allen Bronson at this pick. He has the size to move to any of LB positions we would need him to fill in at and has the ratings that fit our scheme very well.

Edit: Also are we thinking about making an offer to our RFA SS Ty Lincoln? He looks too good to just let walk. Especially considering Donnie Bridgeman can't have that many years left in him.

primelord

LDT James Beechler has that break out look to him.

Edit: Another guy who looks like he might make a capable backup is FS Byron Upshaw.

I see now that I hjave nto re-signed K Covington, nor any rookie to replace him - so that's something we'd need to do. We also have a few million below the salary cap... and that might raise a question or two.

Should we, perhaps, try to re-sign CB Irv Boyd, whose demands have dropped? What about LB Alan Martinez, who is pretty affordable, and probably batter than most of the reserves we currently have?

Some things yet to resolve before training camp, I suppose.

Do we really even want Covington back? He missed 8 FG's last season. Not exactly stellar. I can't imagine a guy like URFA Erik Buckner doing much worse.

As far as Irv Boyd I would love to resign him, but I think Houston is going to be better in the long run so it may not be the best place to tie up long term money. I agree resigning Alan Martinez probably makes a lot of sense here. He would provide us with a lot of good depth at LB.

Covington has won us a lot of games, and has hit some from gigantic distances.. It's worth a least seriously considering keeping him.

QuikSand
03-25-2003, 08:54 PM
I thought the decision on Covington was worth making as a group... we have the cash, but as I recall he wants something like $1.7 million. We can sign a rookie for $540,000 I believe.

I am pretty indifferent. I don't want things to come down to our kicker, so worrying about seems like planning to lose.

Sorry, I forgot to note that. I re-signed him, and switched his spot - he might compete for a starting job this year and beyond.

primelord, you may need to evaluate the secondary, and decide who might need a position switch back there.

Are we going to start our young corners? I was surprised to see that our top young corner sat on the bench nearly all of last year - are we going to toss our young guns out there this season, or go with the seasoned guys with less upside?

That was an accident. Maffett was originally the starter, but he was injured early and I just plain forgot to put him back in the lineup. I unfortunately didn't catch that until the championship game. :)

Our two young CB's will start this season.

At K, I can't see spending the money for Covington.. I say we sign one of the URFAs, either Buckner or Wilke..

On another front... we now have 6 WRs... I wonder about our need/ability to keep 6 on the roster... do we need to consider trading one of our studs that we're going to lose anyways, so that we can get something out of him rather than just cutting him?

Elsewhere, I'm happy with what we have on offense.. I just looked through the line, and from top to bottom, this may be the best line we've had if you count the depth.. I've never been so sure that if someone gets hurt, we have a sub that is just as capable..

This season should be anohter good one...

By my read, WR Wayne Hill is the most popular guy in the position group, leaving us to do as we wish with the rest of the crowd. If we separate Wr into two groups (SE and FL) then the other guy who gets protected is rookie Karl Dockery.

In either interpretation, both Perea and Blaine are available to be moved out.

Looking forward, keep in mind that WR Matthew Morrell, another guy without a deal after this season, will be a RFA for us - meaning we might get a shot at re-signing him fairly cheaply next year, if we needed to. Just tuck that away.

primelord
03-26-2003, 03:19 PM
I suspect we won't get a lot for either Perea or Blaine. I don't think FOF considers WR's very valuable when it comes to trades. So with that being the case I would suggest we try and trade Perea and keep Blaine. We may need the depth as the year goes on.

QuikSand
03-26-2003, 05:59 PM
I tend to think that first round picks are where it's at in this game. So - what would we have to give, along with WR Blaine (only one year left on his deal) to move into the first round?

We already dealt our 4th and 5th picks... how about Blaine plus a 3rd for somebody's 1st rounder?

wade moore
03-26-2003, 06:28 PM
QS,

What is your experience with trading wideouts? I tend to not trade much in the game, so i don't have a gauge of it.. is prime on target? if we could get a 1st for blaine and a 3rd i say go for it for sure..

cthomer5000
03-26-2003, 09:11 PM
why not play it safe and send Blaine and a 2nd for the 1st? I think it's better to perhaps give up too much then get burned and have to cut him.

Or Blaine and a 4th (or 3rd) for a 2nd rounder.

QuikSand
03-26-2003, 09:16 PM
Hmmm... I really don't know, but Blaine is a pretty well-developed receiver, for certain. I would have guessed we'd get a first rounder straight up for him, but I tempered that based on primelord's caution. I certainly don't want to end up with nothing, and be forced into cutting him. I'm flexible.

primelord
03-26-2003, 09:31 PM
My comments were meant more from a Blaine straight up for a pick perspective. I don't think there is anyway we would get a 1st rounder for Blaine straight up. I would say Blaine and a 3rd rounder would probably have a good shot of being successful.

cthomer5000
03-26-2003, 09:31 PM
Well, in my experience the computer has always greatly overvalued 1st rounders in relation to other draft picks. I would think we could get a 2nd rounder fairly easily. Maybe straight up or by tossing in a 5th or 4th rounder.

I think it's better if we look at what we can get rather than focusing on what deal we might miss out on.

EDIT:
So in summary, I'm in favor of going for a 2nd round pick (unless we are dead-set on a first rounder). I'm still fleixble though and will fully support whatever decision is made.

QuikSand
03-27-2003, 08:17 AM
Okay, we're in jeopardy of dying on the vine here... we've been sitting still for the last few days, it seems. I thought I was done with my leg, but I'm going to make an offer of Blaine and our 3rd rounder for soembody's 1st rounder next year.

After that, we'll look at what else we can come up with. Then, I will look at LB Alan Martinez and CB Irv Boyd - we'll see how to go forward from here, absent much input either way on these guys.

QuikSand
03-27-2003, 08:27 AM
Okay, the trade for Blaine went through - we now have an extra first round pick next year. It's Champaign's, and they went 6-10 last year, so there's some hope that it will be another pretty good pick.

I re-signed LB Alan Martinez to a one year deal for a little over $3 million. If our youngsters at LB pan out, this might be superfluous, but it seemed like a worthwhile insurance policy to me. I couldn't get CB Irv Boyd to accept a one year deal that was at all reasonable.

I have run training camp, and am posting update files after camp is through. Hopwefully, our coordinators can lead the final cut-downs, and get us into the exhibition season.

And yes, I have once again gotten us into trouble this way - a few of our lesser players are now fav faves, and we'll have to deal with that.

Honestly, I rather like the fact that this doesn't just go away for us. If I were being more vigilant, we could be refusing to sign players with high popularity ratings... but is that the kind if "realism" that we're gong for? Is that how real teams plan their roster moves?

Anyway - take this for what it's worth. (Perhaps we should waive the fan fave rule for players who have never played a game for us? Or never started a game for us? That might add some more sanity to the system we use)

Personally, I like the "rudy's" that we're forced to keep on our team.. we are too competitive as it is, without easing up..

Just a heads up for everyone.. I will be going out of town for the weekend, so after Friday morning I won't be able to check the web at all (maybe slightly) or run games... We don't need to hold up for me, Bee can take on his role as the backup OC if he's willing, to run games, etc.. I can put in my settings tonight/tomorrow morning.. if prime has, I can run the preseason.. and then Bee and prime can move on from there..

Good job on the trade.. should have a good draft next season..

prime.. start bugging jim about th epatch.. we're creeping up on 2002 ;)

I think we should keep signing players regardless of their popularity until it hits critical mass, then we can deal with that obstacle. Right now we still need a greater challenge. Also I'd say we definitely classify positions more generally for the popularity thing.

We should be forced to keep the most popular "wide receiver", not both the top SE and FL. If we don't take it that way we run into all kinds of issues with moving players.

a look at the roster popularity sorted by position. Blue players have to stay for now.<font face=courier>

The offer we will be forced to make to DT Clifton Ramsey next year wil be colossal. Nd the year after that, it will be Coghill's turn. Both are star-caliber players, but they are going to cost an arm and a leg.

Interestingly enough - TE Lamont Dresow was a guy we were compelled to re-sign, since he was a fan favorite. However, after one year as our starter (and a very successful year at that) he has apparently fallen out of favor, and is now only "recognized."

Intriguing. That leaves us with a mandate on our new backup - a nice-looking rookie. We might have to deal Dresow in order to re-sign the rookie Hatcher after this season. Heh.

I won't be able to run games this weekend either, I'm dealing with the French invasion (in-laws) until Tuesday. I can stop in and make comments and the like, but I say just let primelord run the games.

We should be forced to keep the most popular "wide receiver", not both the top SE and FL. If we don't take it that way we run into all kinds of issues with moving players.

I kinda disagree here. I like the fact that the fan favorite issue is causing problems. I also like the fact that it's going to complicate issues with moving players. If anything we add another rule that says you can't change the position of the most popular player at his current position.

I think QS makes an interesting point about signing "unpopular" players, but we know this rating changes and I'm not totally convinced this strategy would be very effective. For one, it makes us choose lesser talent. For another, if a player keeps starting over a couple seasons I suspect they will become fan favorites.

If the group feels it's better to change or modify the rule that's fine with me, but at this point I think it's probably the most challenging and intriguing part of this dynasty to me.

I pretty much agree, Bee, after some thought - at leat conceptually. I think that without the "fan favorite" rule in place, we'd be way too far ahead of the rest of the world in this sim, and it wouldn't be fun at all. Heh, even with the numerous overpaid players, serious star injuries, and dead cap space - we still have made it to three straight title games. Even though it was (in my mind, at least) an afterthought, this has turned out to be the most compelling rule that we're following.

I'm not sure that saying we need to keep a guy at both LG and RG, or FL and SE, or whatever - serves that purpose any more than we had originally intended. But I generally agree that this game needs a serious kick in the ass to be at all challenging, and right now, the best thing we have going for us in that regard is this "fan favorite" rule.

Is there a time of day that is generally best for all of us to contribute? Things have really been slowing down lately.

I can drop general opinions in here during the day, but can only look at the game itself between 6.30-11pm (eastern standard time).

also, Quik, do you want to reassign me to some sort of official position? I was technically head scout, but since everyone scouts it's essentially a meaningless position.

QuikSand
03-27-2003, 07:12 PM
cthomer, if you have a position you'd like to assume control over, you'd be more than welcome to do so. Or, if you'd liek to assume control of scouting (and actualy run the game through the FA process and draft) that would be perfectly fine by me - I only started doing that myself because you were unavailable for a while. Your call, I'm sure our coordinators would be flexible, whatever you desire. (We don't have a second person manning the defense, as I recall)

If prime gets his stuff done before the morning, then I will do it in the morning.. otherwise prime will do it during the day i'm sure..

as for contributing time.. mine is weird.. i can't at work (sometimes on breaks), so i do early in the morning.. then as time permits from like 6pm to 11pm...

As for a role for you... I can think of several things... statistician/historian.. a true scouting lead (As quick said, run drafts, etc)... umm.. i'll think of more i'm sure ;)

Here are the files with a few notes...

1) I bumped McAlister, Cog, and Biggs out of their spots to avoid injury...

2) McAfee is also a spot lower.. normally it would be Biggs and McAlister a spot higher.. Biggs also should be our #1 punt returner..

3) I'm undecided at the LT position.. I'd like to see both guys start two games in the preseason (McGee and Armstrong) and let Bee decide who will start..

That should be it.. good luck this weekend guys, sorry I couldn't be around.. I'll TRY to check in to see what's up, but probably can't until I get home sunday night..

Sorry Wade I meant to have my changes in so you could run pre season this morning, but we had some server problems that kept me working until very late last night. I figure since everyone seems pretty busy this weekend I will try and run pre season adn thenlike the first 8 games of the season today. And then I will run the rest over the weekend.

If everyone wants to we can probably end up just running the whole season today too. I guess we can just see what happens.

Well on defense there aren't really many positions up for grabs in this preseason. There are a few things I will be interested in watching though.

I am curious to see how 2nd year DE A.J. Hitchcock does. He played well last preseason, but was actually outplayed by Casas despite the fact he got the bulk of the pass rushing downs. My plan was to use Casas in run sits and Hitchcock in pass sits, but he will have to play well to keep that job.

Also I think the job at FS is up for grabs. I have moved Richie Beyer over to SS. He had more experience at that position and benefitted nicely from that move. I think our GM favors Jerald Brooks, but I am kind of partial to Ty Lincoln. We also have the free agent we signed Bubba Nichols to think about. I will try and make sure all of them get some significant time this preseason. No matter what we have a lot of depth at safety this year.

Another thing to watch. will be starting Wellman, Harden, Maffett, and Houston in the pre season. They all are slated to be starters in the regular season for us so that could be risky, but I think they could use the development time. The rest of the "regulars" will sit the pre season out.

Here is a look at our DB's. I don't know how the PdPCT is calculated so I just made up a little +/- system real quick for the pass coverage. If a ball is caught on you it is -1, if you defend the pass it is +1, and if you intercept the pass it is +2.

Name Tkl Ast Cgt Dfn Int Rply Pply TkP +/-
Maffett 6 8 8 3 4 72 111 7.7 +3
Sheff 7 1 2 0 1 27 43 11.4 0
Brooks 9 2 5 2 0 48 73 9.1 -3
Lincoln 9 0 4 1 0 63 75 6.5 -3
Nichols 16 2 5 1 0 46 57 17.5 -4
Beyer 16 4 7 3 0 51 76 15.7 -4
Carlson 13 4 9 0 0 58 86 11.8 -9
Houston 14 2 12 0 1 84 108 8.3 -10

I also find the calculation a mystery (although it's probably in the help file). I really wish there was a 'targeted' number as their is with wide recievers. It would be nice to know who's getting picked on.

A couple of things jump out at me from these stats.

1) I think the opposition is going to pick on Houston quite a bit this year. He gave up a lot of catches in the pre season.

2) It looks to me like Nichols won the battle for the FS starting slot. He was easily the best tackler this pre season and he only had a slightly worse +/-. Although the +/- system doesn't take into account that Brooks and Lincoln were on the field more.

3) Maffett looks like he is developing very nicely.

I am almost positive I saw ez post the formula for the PdPCT somewhere on the old board, but I can't find it. I think he linked to it in one of the Journal threads, but the link he used is broken.

Dola,

I found it. :)

PDQ = 20 + 1500 * INTrate + 600 * DEFrate - 100 * CAUGHTrate

INTrate = interceptions/pass plays
DEFrate = passes defensed/pass plays
CAUGHTrate = catches allowed/pass plays

Of course that formula says Maffet had a 86.0 PdPCT so I am not certain that is right. :)

Are you saying that a fan favorite from an opposing team instantly becomes a fan favorite for your team? Also, a fan favorite coming out of college instantly becomes a fan favorite for your team? That doesn't make much sense.

we don't say it, the game does.

Certainly in real life some players popularity does transfer (every team sells a ton of Jerseys of it's #1 draft pick), but FOF could use a lot more work in dealing with popularity.

Yea there has been several complaints in the past that there are far too many fan favorites in the game. We are seeing this first hand since we have house rule involving it. :) Although in our case it's not such a bad thing since it is making things tougher for us.

Ok guys I need some help setting the offense up. We don't need to cut anyone from the offense. I made enough cuts from the defense. Here are my questions.

QB: Easy enough. 1. Coghill 2. Newton 3. Dobbins

RB: Who do we want to sit here? I am thinking of our 4 RB's Crawford is now the worst of the lot. I am guessing we make him inactive and then it goes. 1. Biggs 2. McAfee 3. Crawford?

The FB's and TE's are easy enough.

What about at WR? Same as the last few years? Hill and Perea at FL and McAllister and I guess Morrell at SE? Do we want to try and get Morrell more PT?

Come to think of it. I am just going to upload the files as is. Bee, Quik, ct etc. When you guys get a chance if you can look at the files and let me know who we should start that would be great. If it doesn't happen today thats fine, but it would be nice to get some games in today. Either way it doesn't matter.

Wade obviously if you see this let me know who you want in, but I don't think you can look at the files until sunday.

we should definitely make Crawford inactive. The best we can hope for is him getting pissed of and either retiring/refusing to re-sign when the contract is up.

On offense, it's a tough call at LT... we have three options, none perfect. Woolridge actually put up good numbers last year, despite having dropped off greatly following his injury. Armstrong is a good run blocker, but in our offense his skills are a mismatch. McGee, our promising rookie, need splaying time to develop - but on a contending team, do you "bring a guy along" at a key position like left tackle?

I think I vote for McGee to start - the tendency in FOF seems to be for players to play somewhat "to theur potential," and I suspect that by the end of the season, he'll be appreciably better than the other guys even in current skills.

I agree with QS about McGee on LT.

I'd so we go with McGee but definitely keep an eye on him.

By the way, as you may have noticed, the PDQ statistic (reference above, with formula) is no longer used in the game... that was in FOF 2001.

Looks like the formula in FOF4 is more like:

PDPct = 20 + 120 * INTrate + 60 * DEFrate - 30 * CAUGHTrate

INTrate = interceptions/pass plays
DEFrate = passes defensed/pass plays
CAUGHTrate = catches allowed/pass plays

Sorry we were just stalled. I ended up being very busy this weekend. Wade go ahead and sim the first four games just so I am certain the offense is set the way you want it.
