Always though it was an 'average' film when I saw it as a kid - but for some reason I still remember it now ...
(although I have probably answered wrong :D)
it was an 'average' film

I thought it was awesome when i was a kid. Now, I'd probably hate it.

Somewhat of a ripoff of Ender's Game, but not a bad flick for the 80s.

I always wanted somebody to recruit me for Contra.

Pretty warming Flamey piccy
Oh come on - the story line was perfect fodder for a teenage kid and I loved the idea, however the script and acting was amazingly cringeworthy (especially compared to Star Wars) ... and that was how I viewed it as a teenager, I'd hate to think how I'd view it if I saw it today as an adult.
The main thing I recall from it was that I believe it was one of the first 'heavily' digital films with regards to special effects and backdrops etc.

Bought it for $5 at Wal_mart a couple of weeks ago. Upscaling this movie is not a good thing.

Wasn't it released before Ender's Game?
I think so, in addition to not being very similar at all to it.

Anything with Catherine Mary Stewart was more than okay in my book.

 Holy cow! You're right! It was released in 1984 and Ender's Game was published in 1985!

The book, yes. But the concepts of Ender's Game was written by Card for Analog magazine in 1977, so the story was out there. Ender's Game, the book, and the following series, was him fleshing out the story.

From now on I will inner monologue RA's posts as Harry Caray.
Hey! Would you rather be the leading scientist in your field or have mad cow disease??

I was old enough when that came out to be aware of "hype" and I had read about how much excitement there was for the movie and that it was going to be the greatest thing since Star Wars. I was also old enough that the acting, writing and filmmaking was an insult to all filmgoers.
Oddly, however, I'd give higher ratings to the much more insulting Masters of the Universe movie, but that is primarily because Chelsea Field in her Teela costume made me all tingly inside. Right up there with Erin Gray in her Wilma Deering.

Courtney Cox had some young hotness going on in Masters of the Universe as well.
