Any word on this rumor about a 2nd NHL tean being added to Toronto?

The initial article was very speculative.

Here's two Leafs beat writers who say it will never happen:
The Spin (http://thestar.blogs.com/thespin/2008/10/what-to-do.html)
FAN590 - Blogs - Nothing But Leafs » Blog Archive » MLSE Would Reject Second NHL Team (http://blog.rogersbroadcasting.com/nothingbutleafs/2008/10/21/mlse-would-reject-second-nhl-team/)

Here's two more who say it's a great idea:
globeandmail.com: Globe on Hockey - Second T.O. team long overdue (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081021.WBhockeyblog20081021111225/WBStory/WBhockeyblog/)
Support grows for second Toronto*team - From The Rink (http://www.fromtherink.com/2008/10/21/639611/support-grows-for-second-t)

Bottom line: I think it's quite possible that both of those two viewpoints ("great idea!" vs. "never happen!") are correct.

The NHL needs to get rid of Bettman, ASAP.

They need to fix the current markets that teams are falling flat and losing money. Secondly, they need a better TV market. Then, and only then, should you even consider the idea of expansion.

Also,

Doesn't the NHL want to expand into Europe?

It only makes sense if you move one of the existing loser franchises there (its an even better idea for MLB and NY).

Any team would find it tough to pay off Detroit,Toronto and buffalo.Southern Ontario makes much more sense.

Southern Ontario?

I saw rumors of one of the Toronto-based billionaires mulling the possibility of making an offer for the Leafs, or MLES as a whole. Is this true?

While I think another team in Toronto would work quite well, expansion should be out of the question. If it's the case of a relocated team, then sure, go nuts.

It would Ted Rogers, who owns the Blue Jays and several TV netowrks (and is one of the guys trying to steal the Bills). He'd basically create one massive sports enterprise that would own all of Toronto.

While I'm sure he would be interested, I'm talking about Alex Shnaider.

Would it work? Most likely it would work. Would the Leafs allow it? If they were that opposed to a team down the road in Hamilton or Kitchener-Waterloo they only way they would even think about it is if you paid them off BIG time. Southern Ontario could easily support two more teams. A second team for Toronto and a team in Hamilton would make much more sense than Florida, Phoenix, Nashville etc.

The problem with a team in Hamilton is that it would certainly impact the Sabres in a bad way.

1800 of the Sabres season ticket sales are from Canada

Should have happened a long time ago. There is no reason there shouldn't be 2 teams in Toronto when you have 3 in the NYC Metro area, and 2 in the Los Angeles Metro Area.
