The Alternate Universe Football League (http://aufl.simsportleagues.com) is in the offseason of the 1984 season and has a few openings.

AUFL, which originally ran 1985-87 before a database corruption caused us to move back and re-start with 1983, is a historical/fictional hybrid league. The league is comprised of the 28 NFL teams from the 1980s, plus four USFL franchises. All NFL and USFL players are in the league, with the goal being to have as many real players as possible. To that end, the draft classes are hand-created and include every player drafted by either the NFL or USFL whether they actually played pro football or not, plus some CFL players and any undrafted players who played in the NFL or USFL.

The league has a very strong core of GMs, but like most leagues, there is some turnover caused by GMs who sign up and then disappear. The league also includes several neat features by AUFL Broncos GM and Conscriptor creator jdavidbakr such as a php-driven stat database (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/) with an integrated stage file upload utility and a new "Game Center (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/gamecenter.php?year=1983)" that has to be seen to be believed.

Currently available teams are:
Arizona Wranglers (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=0) (5-11 in 1983; have Art Monk and Randy White)
Dallas Cowboys (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=7) (7-9 in '83; have Tony Dorsett and Too Tall Jones)
Green Bay Packers (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=10) (8-7-1, played in NFC title game; QB Joe Theismann)
Los Angeles Rams (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=24) (4-12, have Eric Dickerson and #4 overall pick in draft)
Philadelphia Eagles (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=21) (defending NFC Champions; QB Ron Jaworski, CB Roynell Young)
St. Louis Cardinals (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=26) (8-8 with a great offense led by QB Neil Lomax)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=27) (5-11; 6th overall pick in '84; a challenge for a patient building GM)

If you are interested in joining AUFL, you can PM me here or post over on the AUFL website (http://aufl.simsportleagues.com) in the 'Sign Up/Waiting List (http://aufl.simsportleagues.com/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=10)' forum.

Add the Miami Dolphins (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=14) to the list of available teams. The 'Fins were 5-11 in 1983 and own the 7th overall pick in the draft (which begins Monday). Dan Marino got nailed by the x-factor on league start, but I believe he may be masked and will eventually become a stud.

Don't think legendsport has posted since he updated the website - very cool, game of the week featured on the home page (http://aufl.simsportleagues.com/), and of course the Game Center (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/gamecenter.php?year=1983) is available for all games.

We're getting ready to start 1984 - just finished early FA - so it is a great time to get in. Dolphins were taken yesterday I think, so the AFC is full up - and a handful of teams are available in the NFC, including the defending NFC champion Eagles. The talent level is very even among the teams as we started in 1983 with an allocation draft, so even if you pick up a team with a poor record it is the type of a situation where you can turn that team around very quickly. Check out our database at http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/ and come join a great league! Available teams:

Thanks Jon. As mentioned above, the site's been given a facelift to be a more informative (and user-friendly).

Some of the open teams are very good... a couple of the others, not so much. So there's something for everyone. ;)

Rams should be open, Nate, it'd be great to have you on board. Joe should get back with you soon if he hasn't already.

Signed up for the forums today, can't wait for a response. Lots of strong owners, even if there are a few openings in the NFC. You can guarantee I'm not going anywhere.

We're getting ready to start the 1984 season, with the first games being on Tuesday 11/25. We have a new GM who hasn't picked a team yet, with Tampa Bay, Philly, Dallas and Arizona still available.

Almost full up! Only Dallas and Tampa Bay remain.

We still have both Dallas and Tampa Bay available. We just finished 1984 and have Staff Hiring 1 for 1985 tomorrow, so this is - without question - THE best time to get in.

I know everyone says that they have a great group of GMs and so forth, so this may seem like more of the same, but I am 100% honest in saying that in my 10 or so seasons as a MP commissioner, I've never had a better group than what we have in AUFL right now - or had a more enjoyable season than the one we just completed. We've got some 'newbies' and some 'grizzled vets' - but they're all good guys who are active, helpful, amusing and a great benefit to the league.

There's good balance in the league as well - we had a lot of nail-biters this season and I expect 1985 to be even more competitive.

AUFL can't promise you a good team, but we can promise a good time.

The Rams are available - the last team standing as the other 31 are set.

Everything I said above is still true - the league's got a great group of GMs and is very competitive with no clear-cut juggernaut.

If you're looking for a challenge, this team might be for you. They've got Eric Dickerson and... well, not much else worth mentioning. They do own the second overall pick in each round of the draft (1985, coming up next week). They also have a young Ken O'Brien at QB. There are a few pieces to build around and trading out of #2 overall would probably net you a slew of future picks. Or you could keep it and draft one of the several outstanding rookies in the class of '85. The league moves fairly quickly, so you could probably turn things around in a couple of seasons if you're an astute team-building type.

The Rams have been taken, but a new opening has come up: the Detroit Lions (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=9). The Lions finished 1984 at 7-8-1 and had a GM who was taking care of business, so improving this team isn't going to be an overwhelmingly difficult chore.

We've just started early free agency and the draft begins this weekend, so the time is now if you want to have maximum impact on the makeup of the 1985 Lions.

Please pm me or sign up over at the AUFL website (http://aufl.simsportleagues.com) and then PM me there.

I have interest in the Lions or the Rams if the new owner would rather have the Lions. I have registered on the site but haven't gotten my verification email yet. I really like the idea of a fast paced league. Thanks.

We had a couple of guys drop out during round 1 of the draft (round 2 is ongoing today). The Cardinals & Giants are now available - both teams are pretty competitive.

The Giants (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=18) were 10-6 in 1984 and are the defending NFC East Champs while the Cardinals (http://aufl.jdavidbaker.com/show_team.php?id=26) went 9-7 in a very tough NFC West.

Unlike most openings, these are teams who had committed and active GMs, did not suffer from absentee management and are in good shape with some star players and plenty of potential.

The Giants have been claimed, but the Cardinals remain available.

Update: the Cardinals have been claimed, but the Giants guy doesn't have the game, so he's not going to be able to join (obviously). The Giants are now available again.

The Packers are also now available, joining the Cardinals.

I activated your account - I will PM you the Packers' setup info momentarily.

As for the other opening - I'm getting senile (or it's just hard to keep track when people join and then don't have the game and have to quit). The Giants - not the Cardinals - are available.
