Let me say this is the first time I've come across this kind of neighbor. We moved to this subdivision in June 1 of this year and damn near every night their dog barks for an hour or so straight. Usually it keeps our son from falling asleep or wakes him up.
Tonight, their dog has been barking since I got home from work at 4:45...that's right for the last THREE HOURS their dog has been barking. They are home, just ignoring her I guess.
What's the correct way to handle this? I'd love to go to their door and be like WTF but I don't think its appropriate. Anyone? :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Just hope your neighbor isn't a cop like ours. He just lets his dog wander all over the neighborhood shitting where he feels like it so, reporting him is about butt ass useless.
Call them in for noise ordinance or cruelty to animals or something.

I would talk to them first unless you already know they're asses. My uncle had some neighbor say they wanted to go on his land to put up a solid fence so my uncle's dog wouldn't bark as much and he said sure. Next week a cop shows up and give him a warning. My uncle planted some shrubs all along the side of the yard so the other guy has no view and can't even see to get out of his driveway. They go up 20 feet in the air and are as thick as something really thick.

Is the dog outside?
Is it a large or small dog?
Os it threatening in any way?
If small, outside and un threatening simply go over and pet/play with it. The if the neighbor notices make a comment about how attention starved it is.
I feel bad not for you, but the dog. Poor pup.
:)
Seriously though they seem petty crappy as people...

Do a little research, find the appropriate enforcement agency & make a phone call. Your tax dollars pay for the service, might as well make use of it.

I would talk to the neighbor first, maybe they can change the dogs habits.
Is the dog inside or outside when it is barking, what are the neighbors like?

You're stuck a bit. I had one neighbor call the cops on my dog who was barking, but he got screwed because he did it the day AFTER another dog was wandering loose, and I figured they got called because of my dogs barking at the other dog (and I was home and had brought them in fairly quickly). I had no idea my dogs were doing that during the day, and we started keeping them inside and fixed the problem, once I knew about it.
However, if he decides to be a jerk about it, and you call the cops, it starts a neighbor feud.
Best bet is probably to talk to animal control and let them warn him. If it keeps up, then they can fine. Around here it takes a couple of complaints before the police will act beyond a warning, but they do warn on each complaint which lets the neighbor know someone is happy.
I'd especially take this route if it's clear they are home and thus have to be aware of this.

Its a big dog, I think some kind of shepherd. They keep her outside, 24/7. A lot of times I will see her standing at the backdoor with her bowl in her mouth, put the bowl down and begin barking.
The lady that lives there seems nice but her and the kids all seem very lazy to me. For example, back in September we got some rain they must have gotten some water in their basement. They've dug up a spot near their house and haven't done anything with it since, instead of fixing the area they just leave it and mow around it. They mow a couple feet into my yard to get around it.
She usually barks anywhere from 5pm - 2am. Almost every Friday night you can count on her barking until at least 11pm. She gets pretty nasty, kind of scares me at times, when I am mowing my yard but there is a fence.
My biggest thing is I don't want to get a neighbor fued going on but damn this is crazy.
She finally stopped barking about an hour ago.

Kind of awful to take it out on the dog when it is the owners fault.

call the cops. squeaky wheel gets the oil.
you have to ask yourself what kind of relationship do you have with your neighbors now? do you talk a lot with them and do you kids play with their kids and are you generally friends? if so, you wouldn't want to ruin that. but if you're "hi and goodbye" neighbors, you know, those are the only 2 words you say to each other then that's not really a relationship worth fretting over so alert the authorities. either they want the dog or they don't.
maybe mow your lawn at nite, create noise of your own.
always remember - doing nothing gets nothing done.

Talk to the neighbor on the other side of him, and see if it's bothering him too. Then let him start the ball rolling for animal control. And you can feign ignorance.

Why should the neighbor's kid get all the fun?

Oh good point. He should have a family reunion and have everybody go over and shit on their door.

I once had a neighbor with a barking dog like this. When we would have people over, we would hang out in the backyard and the dog would constantly stand at the fence and bark at us.
One night, one of the folks at our party walked over to the fence where the dog was and pissed on the dog.
The dog never barked at us in the backyard again. If we had people over, he would lay on the other side of his yard and stare at us the whole time, but he never barked.
I say you go piss on the dog.

We had one at our old house, behind us, that would bark all night. People complained all the time... but nothing ever happened.
One night the wife and I went out drinking with some friends... after we came home and went to bed, the dog started barking and woke us up.. I'll never forget she opened up the window and shouted, "Shut your fucking dog up or I swear I blow it's fucking head off!!!"
I layed there laughing in amazement as she's never like that. About 5 mins goes by and the barking was over. She yells out, "Thank you" and from then on, the dog was always brought in the house at night.
The neighbors next door even thanked her as I guess they heard her that night. :)

I hear dogs love alka seltzer.
Teach those owners by making them clean up that mess.

Definitely don't take it out on the dog. I had to take their dog over to them a couple times. I wasn't there very often, I guess he just came over when I was there. I guess the dog knew my uncle didn't care for any of them. I guess it all started when the neighbor put a big orange sign on the edge of their property facing my uncle's house stating no sex offenders allowed on property. I have no clue were they came up with that and I laughed my ass off, but I don't think my uncle thought it was funny.
