I like the overtime rules, although I could be pursuaded if the rule was changed to the first team that scores a TD, rather than the lame ass walkoff FG's.

the NFL overtime rules are just idiotic. Both teams ought to be guaranteed at least one possession, otherwise it's essentially a coin-toss.
I guess we're supposed to write this off as "heat of the moment" as you are, I'm sure, aware how thoroughly unsupported that claim is.

It's absolute fucking bullshit. They show one drive, then they go to an interview, some studio talk, and then another interview and miss the Patriots drive. Right now, the game is on, and they are just talking in the studio. Its just a big Sprint commercial and it's driving me crazy.

I'd love to see first to 6 points. If you give a TD drive on the first possession of OT, you really deserve to lose. Otherwise, you need 2 FGs to win.
The thing about each team getting a possession is that I think it gives a huge a advantage to the team with the ball second, maybe even a bigger advantage than the team who gets the ball first in the current setup. (And in the current setup, isn't it like 50/50 after the coin toss - how much better can you get than that?)

I want Carolina to lose.. but I really want them to stop letting Detroit score too... Can we have a shutout the rest of the way for both teams?
In other news, the Giants have looked very impressive on offense. That offensive line has been outstanding. Their defense has been ok, but their special teams so far this game has been a disaster. Either way though, they're really handing it to one of the other better teams in the league so far.

I always thought Hawk would be a better MLB and Barnett an OLB. Hawk has the size and instincts to handle that spot. Chillar's also a solid 4th LB and should be OK on the outside. Losing Barnett is tough, but that's the one area we have some depth.
Nice to see our OL healthy and starting to play well too.

Aaron Rodgers said it best before the game, the Chicago Bears don't belong on the same field as the Green Bay Packers. What a pathetic performance by the Bears who had a chance to bury the Packers and nail the coffin shut.
Tampa currently has a 6 point lead on Minnesota. Hopefully they don't blow it and lose by 1 like the Packers did last week.
Even more pathetic performances by the Eagles, Panthers, and Dolphins against the 3 worst teams in the NFL. Looks like they might all escape with wins though.

Eh. They'd be an early out in the playoffs anyway. Not that I wouldn't love to see them go, mind, but it was never extremely likely. I was guessing earlier that they'd win one on the road, lose one at home, and end up 8-8. I'll be happy with that, very happy at 9-7, and ok with 7-9. Considering they were supposed to be 1-15, and I felt like I was reaching when I predict 6-10, I think the average Falcon fan is happy as long as they don't lose out from here.

Packers win, Bears lose, Vikings lose. All 3 teams now tied atop the NFC North. The favorites are the Packers who have overcome key injury after key injury on the defense. The Bears looked terrible today. Their defense is not any good and Kyle Orton's health is in doubt.
The Vikings have been playing better but they will lose Jared Allen for a game because of his cheap hit in Aaron Rodgers. They will lose Kevin and Pat Williams for 4 games because they cheated. It should be an interesting finish with the Packers ultimately coming out on top. This is why I didn't declare them dead last week like some other Packer fans did.

No idea what to make of Carolina's last two games. Right now though, they're 8-2 and that is all that matters. The Giants are really the only team in the conference that look like a good team even more than half the time, and right now Carolina has the inside track on a bye. No more easy games though, at Atlanta, at Green Bay, vs Tampa, vs Denver, at Giants, at Saints to close it out.

Man, I remember watching college and pro games in the late 60s and early 70s BO (Before overtime) and ties were pretty common. Wouldn't be unusual for four or six teams to have at least one tie and some seasons you'd see teams finish with two or more ties.
Drove people crazy too. A lot of times teams would play for the tie rather than try to win.

Good lord.
Nate Washington may be one of the most physically impressive, as far as size and speed), receivers in the NFL, but he must have the worst hands of any skill player in the league. It's amazing how many times he has been able to get himself wide open this season and not come up with catches.

The only thing standing in Carolinas way is Delhomme was awful the last two weeks. If he even gets back to a game management role, and lets Smith makes plays after the catch the Panthers will do damage.

I am having a difficult time finding any NFC matchup that I think would be a good one. I am definitely not on the Carolina bandwagon, I am not sure they will even hold on to win their division, and if they do I don't see them going far in the playoffs.
No one in the west really does alot for me. Arizona I think would have problems stopping the Giants and their high scoring offense would have less time on the field. In the Central, I think the Bears might be the best matchup against the Giants, but I have no idea if the Bears will even make the playoffs.
I think right now it seems clear to me, the most dangerous opponent for the Giants is themselves. I know there are some super huge Eli fans on this board, but he still seems to be doing well to me because of that tremendous o-line. He still makes a few plays each game that I have seen that make you scratch your head. I think if the Giants just make dumb mistakes, they will lose.. otherwise it just seems they have the best team in the NFC right now.

I'm still not sure. The Chargers tried lateralling it around on the last play, and Pittsburgh S Troy Polamalu batted it down, scooped it up and ran it in for a TD. Time expired. The officials reviewed it. The official came on the field and said there was an illegal forward pitch (which Phil Simms repeatedly said he didn't see) but that the Steelers declined the penalty and took the TD. They lined up for the XP. The officials stopped play again and there was more confusion. The offical came out again and said something about the game ending with the result of the play. Just as the announcer was saying the 17-10 final looked completely normal, CBS flashed the 11-10 final on the screen and the announcers said they had wiped out the TD.

Jeez, this is a team that's 7-3 for the first time since Jimmy Carter was president. They're not going to beat everyone 35-10. They faced a somewhat healthy Seattle team, in a place they hadn't won at in 6 years and were up 26-7 in the fourth quarter. Seattle made a bit of a late run, but Arizona made plays at the end and held on for a nice road win.
Outside of the Giants, I can't think of an NFC team who hasn't squeaked by some inferior teams (esp on the road).

Well my beloved Cards tried to give up a 19 point lead in the fourth quarter, but thankfully held on for the win. They have practically clinched the division-Seattle and St. Louis would need to win 5 of their last 6, San Fran 4 of their last 6 and the Cards to lose all their remaining games just to have a tie in the division.

Do you even watch Giants games? Find the first play of the game today when he bounced into the D line then ran outside for a 25 yard gain against the best run D in the league.
What makes Jacobs amazing has nothing to do with the O-line, it's what he does after he gets past the line, he turns 3 yard gains into 10 yard gains by running people over.
You can make the argument that just about any great back is the product of his line, you think Emmit Smith puts up the numbers he did not playing behind that line?

And i have no clue which play was a forward lateral in the Pittsburgh game. That was some fucked up reffing.
The only thing I'd say there might be a call against is no advancing a fumble vs Polamalu, maybe. If it was illegal or something for a defensive player to bat a ball that far towards their endzone. Although that's legal i guess.
Who knows, Simms and Nance are both dummies anyways.

I never saw anything even close to a forward lateral. I'm in fantasy league using IDP and I'm going up against Polamalu this week. The ruling on that play could very well decide who wins this week. At this point, the feed we're using isn't even giving Polamalu a fumble recovery, much less a forced fumble or of course a TD, I don't know if that's the official final scoring or if that may still be updated, but the only way that could happen is if the official ruling ends up being an illegal forward pass penalty that ends up ending the play at that point. I have no idea, and I care way more than I should given that it doesn't change the outcome of the game in any way :D

The only way it would make sense is if the pass that Polamalu knocked down was a forward pass. Because then it would be an incomplete pass and the end of the play. I didn't see a replay of it, but I don't remember it being close to a forward pass.

Referee says officials errantly voided Steelers TD
By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer 15 minutes ago
PITTSBURGH (AP)—The first 11-10 game in NFL history shouldn’t have ended that way, referee Scott Green said after a last-minute touchdown was errantly taken away from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
The officiating mistake didn’t affect the outcome since the Steelers still would have won, but the touchdown would have changed the score to 17-10—or, more likely, 18-10, since the teams were lined up for an extra-point try that was never attempted.
On first-and-10 from San Diego’s 21 with 5 seconds remaining, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers threw a short pass to LaDainian Tomlinson over the middle for 3 yards. Tomlinson turned and made a handoff-type lateral to wide receiver Chris Chambers, who attempted to pitch the ball to a teammate only to have safety Troy Polamalu scoop it up and score from the 12.
Both teams left the field on what looked to be a game-ending play, but were called back by the officials for the extra-point attempt. At that point, the replay official called for a review.
After watching the play, Green initially announced the ruling on the field was upheld and the touchdown counted. But the officiating crew huddled again before the extra-point attempt and changed the call, deciding that an illegal forward pass should have ended the play.
Green, in a postgame interview with a pool reporter, said that call was errant—even though his explanation for the confusion was almost as confusing as the play itself.
“We should have let the play go through in the end, yes,” Green said. “It was misinterpreted that instead of killing the play, we should have let the play go through.”
Green said the confusion occurred because there was a misunderstanding about which lateral was in question.
“The first pass was the one that was illegal, but it only kills the play if it hits the ground,” Green said. “That was incorrect to have killed it at that point. The ruling should have let the play go on. That’s just the way that it played out. We believe the second pass was legal.”
Green was asked why, since the ball didn’t hit the ground during any of the tossing, the officials decided after huddling that the play should have ended.
“We didn’t kill it on the field,” Green said. “After (the) discussion we decided … there was some confusion over which pass we were talking about and it was decided that it was the second pass that was illegal that did hit the ground and therefore we killed the play there.”
However, the officials realized afterward they erred.
“I know,” Green said. “The rule was misinterpreted.”
Asked about the officiating—the Steelers drew 115 yards in penalties to the Chargers’ 5—Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin declined to comment.
“No, I have never seen a game ended with 13-to-1 in penalties, but I am not answering questions about the officiating,” Tomlin said.
The call affected betting on the game since the Steelers were 5-point favorites and would have covered if the touchdown counted.

I don't think penalty distribution is a big deal, but when every wide angle shot seemingly shows James Harrison hooked, tackled, or facemasked, you really gotta wonder why they didn't throw at least on flag on the Chargers for that. Maybe my definition of holding is too much by the book or something.

I do so heart Mike Brown.
"All I can tell you is that, obviously, our defense isn't what it used to be," Brown said. "Everyone wants it to be what it used to be, and it's not that. It's all about performance, and we haven't been performing well. Wherever we're ranked, that's where we deserve to be ranked, know what I'm saying?
"It is what it is. Once we come to grips that our defense isn't what it's supposed to be, we'll all be better off."
"Our perception is that we have a good defense," Brown said. "The reality is we don't."

I don't know that it is hands down.. Warner isn't bounds ahead of other QBs in the league as far as his stats go.. But he has been statistically the best QB so far this season, and has led a team that is often thought for dead into a good position to make the playoffs. The biggest reason that he is probably likely to win MVP though is because he is just a great story for the media and fans.
Barring a collapse, I don't really see anyone else winning the MVP over him. It usually goes to a QB unless a running back has a run away year (1700+ yards, etc or in Marshall Faulk's case an insane number of all purpose yards).

Well, maybe he'll get the Derek Jeter award by some of those number-less metrics.
He also only accounts for 50% of his team's rushing yards, so he's not really making plays with the ball no other player on his TEAM can make. He's apparently not that irreplaceable, and his leadership role is relatively unknown. Take him out, and the Giants may still well be 6-4 at worse and still in the hunt. Oh, and he has 5 catches so far all season. Sub Leinart for Warner and the Cards are probably with the rest of their division.
He's good, but let's not let fandom get in the way of numbers.

Kurt Warner:
105.5 rating, 71% compl, 3,155 yards, 20 TDs, 7 INT
Next best rated QB: Rivers
100.8 rating, 64.5% compl, 2,513 yards, 21 TDs, 10 INT
Best combo of other similar QBs (300 attempts, 10 TDs):
69.8% compl (Favre), 3,251 yards (Brees), 21 TDs (Rivers), 6 INT (Rodgers)
Warner is with the margin for error with the "Super QB" above. But the best reason for Warner to be in the lead for MVP?
Arizona is ranked 29th in the NFL in rushing yards per game (86.9) and dead last in yards per carry (3.4). So, Arizona is averaging 29 points per game (2nd in the NFL) with virtually no rushing game at all. The other top scoring teams (Giants, Jets, Packers) have much more balance.

He only accounts for 50% because he has sat out alot of 4th quarter blow outs this season. And no one else on his team can turn a 3 yard run into an 11 yard run by running over linebackers and carrying them an additional 5-7 yards. No one in the league does that.

Relatively recent RBs to win the MVP:
2006 - Tomlinson - 1815 rushing yards, 28 rushing TDs, 56 rec, 508 yards, 3 rec TD
2005 - Alexander - 1880 rushing yards, 27 rushing TDs
2000 - Faulk - 1359 rushing yards, 18 rushing TD, 81 rec, 830 rec yards, 8 rec TD
1998 - Davis - 2008 rushing yards, 21 rushing TD
1993 - Smith - 1486 rushing yards, 9 rushing TD, 57 rec, 414 rec yards, 1 rec TD *** led the league in rushing despite only playing 14 games
RBs in the last decade to win the MVP have to put up ridiculous numbers, either crazy yardage, tons of receiving yards, or record setting TD numbers. Jacobs doesn't have any of that.
Jacobs is on pace for 1406 yards and 18 TD and has only caught 8 passes so far this season, a solid season, but he's 4th in the league in rushing, and his importance to his team cannot be reasonably considered to be anywhere near that of Kurt Warner leading the Arizona freaking Cardinals to a division title.

Assuming trends continue, Warner should win the MVP and get almost all of the first place votes.

I'd prefer to get a weather report from someone slightly closer than Missouri, especially since the only reason I care is for gambling purposes.

What worse, Donovan McNabb not knowing NFL games could end in ties or Fighter of Foo not knowing about weather reports?"Maybe a lot of the guys haven't been in the league seven years," cornerback Sheldon Brown said, "but I know the rules."
Told his quarterback didn't know the rule, Mornhinweg said: "Yeah, um, yeah, but, uh, I don't know what to say on that one."

If your third and short, at least have Trent under center with a RB in the backfield to force the defense to defend the run.

Okay, so you have decided to call a time out. Why not just challenge the spot at the goal line? You get longer, and then the worst thing that can happen is you lose a time out. What gives?

I don't question Dick Jauron's decisions. It sucks that Ralph Wilson won't pony up the bucks for a great coach, after giving him a 3-year extension this year.

Edwards has completely lost every ounce of confidence he once had. Did he even ATTEMPT to throw a pass to Lee Evans tonight??? Their best offensive weapon?
Brutal job of scheming by OC Turk Schonert...he should have done a much better job involving Evans early with some slants, screens or even a reverse. Zero touches? Disgusting.
Buffalo sports talk radio is bad enough but I can only imagine how bad it's going to be this week!

RAC is the only one smart enough to call a timeout, and then challenge a play as well(last year vs the Steelers)
Listened to the game, and it sounded like a fight to see who could undercoach their opponent. 3 runs into the line with a timeout, and settling for a 47 yarder? Really doesn't make too much sense. I know you want the Browns to burn their timeouts, but I'd have at least tried to get someone on a hot slant. Then you run the ball and get it down to 5 seconds and kick.
And the squib kick just seems like such a bad play by RAC there too. I know the guy has taken one back earlier, but I'd rather chance stopping them inside the 30, instead of giving them it at the 40+ yard line on the squib. Hell, kick the fuckin thing out of bounds, it's better than a squib most all of the time..

You're both wrong. Jim Fassell is campaigning to be the next Raiders Head Coach.
The fact Crennel hasn't challenged a play all year until now was insane.
Hye dude, the refs don't tell him how to coach, why should he tell them how to ref?
Well, if Fassell can't turn it around, it just can't be done. It'll be time for Bud Selig to contract the Raiders at that point. Along with the Twins and the Devil Rays.
