This is a blanket "thank you" to all who report. There's potential for a ton of it in the near future, so I probably won't reply to every report--just delete it, ban the IP, and move on.

PM Spam, or board-spam?

And why the potential?

Inquiring minds want to know...

There's some board spam in the NCAA dynasty forum which has been gotten to already. But I'm curious about this potential as well...

Board, most likely.

Because I've grown tired of moderating every single new user account that comes through.

The economy's bad so people are looking for cheaper meat options and thus turning to Spam.

But how can you be MFFF if you're not? :D

Heh.

We've had 17 new user registrations since the last time I cleared out the queue...probably just a day or two ago. I'm just tired of going through all of those one by one and trying to decide which ones are legit and which ones are spam, so I'm going to try the approach of IP bans this weekend and see if that works.

Just don't let anyone else in.

We're like the mob. We can close the books and not let anyone in.

sounds like an unfortunate byproduct of moving to a higher traffic area.

Ben, you should really look into adding some additional level of registration challenge/response questioner.

Those work pretty good, because it makes a human have to answer the question/s.

Or just let some grizzled regulars here ask them some questions..If they don't run screaming they are good to go!

Just make it like a Sons of Sam Horn forum. Elitist forum/not so elitist forum.

Looks like letting them through and banning the offending IPs is working so far. The rate of goofy-looking registrations has been reduced already. Only 11 new registrations in the last 5 days, and just a couple of spam messages. I just approved all 11 new ones, so I'd expect some more spam in the next 24 hours. Thanks for your patience and your reports. This seems like the easiest way to go.
