View Full Version : There are some ridiculous Blu-ray deals on Amazon right now.

And I do mean ridiculous. Some of them are likely pre-emptive pricematches of other retailers' deals (like Transformers for $9.99), but there's some other stuff there too. I'm going to pick up a couple (I have TF and Indy 4 in my cart right now; $26.98 for both with no tax or shipping, I don't think I can pass up), but I'm having to restrain myself.

The Rambo 1-3 box set for $18 is tempting as all hell, but I don't know that I'd watch those movies. It's one of those "tempting to have at that price" kind of things.

Yeah, I picked up:

Rambo 1-3
Rambo
21
Transformers
Wanted

All for $87.91.

I'm wavering on Indy 4. I won't be home to pick it up for $14.99 from them tomorrow, so it seems like I might as well grab it at $16.99 so I can get Transformers for $9.99.

I've got the cart pulled up, but haven't actually progressed past that yet. :)

I have to go brave the hordes here shortly (working all day, yay) but I checked to see if they had any Iron Man for $15 left, and they did. Plus, price on Indy 4 had come down from $16.99 to $14.99, so I cancelled last night's order and replaced it, adding Iron Man.

All three movies for $39.97. Merry Christmas, Josh.

I actually stayed up until 3 (well, I was watching a movie until 2 so 3 wasn't a big deal) for their Black Friday games and got the following:

$30 Fallout 3 (PC)
$20 Boom Blox (Wii)
$10 Resident Evil 4 (Wii)
$10 N+ (DS)

And I bought some games from the EBGames B2G1 on Wednesday since they started a day early so I didn't worry about shopping at all today :)

i don't think i'd buy Rambo (or any 80's or 90's movie) for blu ray only cuz it was shot on analog film. newer movies these days are digital so the conversion to the superior blu ray format isn't that much of a jump. i could be wrong, but 80's or 90's movies just don't scream "you need to see me in blu ray to get the best experience!!!" to me.

I don't have any of the Rambo movies on DVD, so at that price I'll pick them up for Blu-Ray. If the price is good enough and I don't have the movie on DVD, I'll pick it up; conversely, if the DVD price is good, I'll pick it up on DVD as opposed to Blu-Ray. As a matter of fact, this morning I picked up Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and Zohan from Best Buy on DVD vice Blu-Ray.

Yeah, I'm generally the same, unless the following two criteria are met:

1) Said older movie is dirt cheap on Blu-ray ($17.99 for all three original Rambo movies qualifies).
2) Said movie is not already part of my DVD collection (which would also be true here).

That said, I ended up not getting the Rambo box this time. Stuck with Indy 4, Iron Man and Transformers.

i think you chose well. those 3 movies were made with the high def medium in mind. movies like 300 or Transformers is what having a blu ray/hdtv is all about. i don't own a blu ray (don't have a HDTV) but i've seen it in person at Best Buy and i was wowed by the quality of the picture. i wasn't like "yes! now i can buy the Toxic Avenger and see it in all its high def glory!" hahaha.

Indy was $17 there on Thu/Fri, too. $42 for the Godfather collection is so, so tempting. I hear the transfer on those is supposed to be excellent.

This nonsense about analog film converting poorly to Blu-Ray has got to stop. Resolution is not an issue, as film has very high resolution (and some directors still prefer to shoot in it then transfer to digital). On older films, noise can be an issue, but they've become pretty good at cleaning that up.

Audio is where some may be lacking, as older films weren't cut with 5.1+ in mind, although Disney's doing a pretty good job of retrofitting it into even the regular DVD releases.

if i take my Hi-8 camcorder out and shoot some footage, if i were to put it on my PC, burn it on to a blu ray disc and watch it - yeah, there may be *some* improvement, but i'm not gonna all of a sudden experience my homemovies in 100% high def/blu ray quality.

using your logic, i can record some vinyl albums on to my PC and burn them to a cd and all of a sudden hear cd quality sound.

apparently i was wrong. i did some quick googling and read some info and film stock, even mostly old film, is of a higher quality than 1080 - sometimes with a resolution of 4K or more, so it converts well into HD.

Hi-8 Camcorder != film industry camera.

Film industry 35mm is meant for display on huge screens and is DOWNSAMPLED to 2k or 4k for digital projectors. Downsampling to 1920x1080 for HD formats is not an issue here.

upconvert doesn't do anything fundamental to the picture. What you get is...kind of a multisample. More pixels in the picture, but it's largely repeating the pixels you'd see at 480p. It doesn't add anything to the picture that's already there.

Go watch Demolition Man in HD on Starz, and then compare it to something like Batman Begins on blu-ray. You'll see a difference. They're either upconverting that, or there's compression issues at play over satellite/cable, because that particular movie looks awful by comparison.

It'll look the same, or worse, if the BD isn't upconverting at 1080p.

You can probably get into BD for $200 or so this holiday (although a PS3 will do it too at $399), so what it really comes down to is getting the discs when you adopt versus snagging deals as you come across them and waiting to get the player to view them.

Is this what you're doing? Are a lot of people doing this? I thought about buying some newer films on Blu-ray, like "The Dark Knight" when it comes out, but not being able to watch them right away is tough. It would be interesting if a lot of people say that they're buying the discs and waiting on the players.

Call me stupid - but I always thought analog was a better (higher quality) format than digital and that was the reason why audiophiles often still play records rather than CD's etc.

Or doesn't this hold true for visuals? (I'd have through it would to be honest from what I know of such things, abeit I've never noticed the difference for any of the above personally being tone deaf and partially sighted :D).

I don't think there are many that are doing that. Early indicators are that the Wii, Blu-ray players and HDTV's all sold extremely well in the opening weekend of sales for the holiday season, both online and in retailers. A lot of people have been just holding out for reasonable pricing. Many thought that the PS3 would reach a reasonable level first, but it appears that the Blu-ray players have won that race and people are jumping on it quickly.

It's mostly that the 35mm film that most movies are shot on has a much higher resolution than even the HD formats, since it has to be displayed so large. So transferring to Blu-Ray does not lose any quality at all.

The only real issue they have is noise in the analog film which requires a cleanup step.

Me? Naw. I have a PS3 at this point.

If I didn't, but I intended to get one, I might do that for more obscure stuff (or stuff that wouldn't sell well) that I didn't expect to last on shelves long-term, but wanted anyway.

But I'd never stockpile, like, "The Dark Knight." Movies like that will be available whenever you're ready to buy, and like LotR, probably in special editions and the like.

I haven't rented a move in some time, so I'm asking honestly here -- is it possible to rent Blu-Ray movies? Particularly like the ones in question here... fairly popular old movies that have been re-released or upgraded to that format?

I've long been a little baffled by the continued vigor in the market for movie purchases... and I'm curious whether this is market an exception to that (due to the new technology), or just more of the same.

I was in Blockbuster last night to get some cheap used games and they carry a large library of Blu-ray discs, including the old ones. I saw all of the Rambo and Die Hard movies in there.

The online rentals for Netflix and Blockbuster also carry all of those movies.

Absolutely agreed, and I presume that has to be central to the willingness or many to spend $15 or more to own a movie. I don't really find the two experiences to be easily comparable, but in the short analysis, I can see there being disagreement there.

Yeah, that's my main theory behind buying rather than renting if I know I'm going to like the movie. I rarely go to the theater for a movie, but it costs $20 or more to do that. Why watch it once for that price when I can watch it on DVD upscaled for less than $10 if I shop around or around $20 to watch it in HD on Blu-ray as many times as I want?

The difference between the two hadn't really struck me until my wife and I watched The Dark Knight the other night. I had seen it in the theater and came away feeling pretty disturbed about The Joker's evil (Ledger did a really good job with the character to get me to that point). Upon watching the movie again on DVD, the intensity of that feeling wasn't even close to what I got from seeing the movie in the theater. I'm sure part of it was from seeing the movie a second time, but I can't help but think that a large part of it was from the big screen vs. the small screen.

I'm toying with getting a Blu-ray player at the moment, but like Quik, I'm not a big movie buff and can't really fathom owning movies so I can watch them five or six times. I have a 360, but picking up a PS3 would be what I would do. I'm wondering if Blu-ray will go the way of the dinosaur shortly given that downloadable movies seem to the wave of the future. Is getting a Blu-ray machine even worth it?

DVD players sold roughly 4 million players by the end of their 3rd holiday season. When the final totals are put together at the end of this 3rd holiday season, about 4.2 million Blu-ray stand alone players will have been sold in the U.S. Note that this does not include a single PS3 player, which also is a Blu-ray player. In Japan, more Blu-ray players are being sold than DVD players on a monthly basis. Europe is nearing that feat. The Blu-ray format isn't going anywhere.

Others have answered this question for you, I think, but I'll summarize what I know:

1) Yes, Netflix will rent them, but they charge you an additional fee on your subscription to get access to those movies.

2) Blockbuster was supposed to have added Blu-ray to all of their stores this year, but I have been in some that don't have it yet.

3) Ditto Hollywood Video. I do know "Family Video" out this way is carrying them.

After some shenanigans, I finally got my Planet Earth... but the BluRay case is so messed up. So much so that I can't really use it now (the disc insert thing slides around)... who would I complain to, UPS or Discovery.com, and how? Is it worth it, or can I just buy a new case like this with room for four BluRays cheap?

This is the site I've seen referenced the most for replacement cases. They were back ordered for a while, looks like they may have the cases in stock again though (not making it an active link just in case).

There's an e-mail for support over at Discovery Channel website. I'd send an e-mail telling them what happened and see if they could assist. Good place to start at least.

I just keep all my DVDs/Blu-rays/etc. in a big CD case that holds like 200 or so. Then I just toss the cases in storage. Takes up less space around the house.

Fantastic deal over at Amazon on Disney, ABC, and Miramax Blu-ray discs.

-Purchase 3 Blu-ray movies, get $20 off.
-Purchase 6 Blu-ray movies, get $50 off.
-Purchase 10 Blu-ray movies, get $100 off.

Many of the movies are $19.49, meaning you can get 10 Blu-ray movies for $94.90 shipped. Normally, that dollar amount would only get you 4 Blu-ray movies.

Better yet, any movies traded in will be donated for use in hospitals or children's homes. Win-win situation.

Some great news for Sony in regards to Blu-ray retail sales. Best Buy remains the #1 Blu-ray seller, but Wal-Mart has now passed Amazon as the #2 Blu-ray sales outlet. This is a huge deal from a retail sales perspective, as Wal-Mart sales are an industry indicator of mass market adoption of a product by U.S. consumers. It's believed that Wal-Mart could push Best Buy for the #1 spot this holiday season with the expected market entry of sub-$100 Blu-ray players, which is an important price point for Wal-Mart consumers.

To piggyback on the Up promotion, if you order it and Monsters Inc together you get $10 off that pair as well.

So I added Cars (part of the Up $10 off promotion) and got all 3 for just over $40. I end up paying shipping/duty/conversion as I'm getting them brought into Canada, but even then I think it worked out to $65 CDN in the end and the same 3 movies from Amazon.ca would have run me over $110.

I missed this one and instead ended up with just Up plus Earth for $30. Could have used this one instead.

But man the only way to buy Blu-Rays remains those sales. Santa Buddies went back up near $30 after its opening week, G-Force is still a $27 pre-order on Amazon, and most at places like BJ's (except for old discounts) is still like $26-$27. I want them to be like DVDs: $16 the week of release, then back up to $20. We aren't buying very many right now, especially given how poor the transfers often are on old movies (I'm paying real close attention to the Blu-Ray reviews).

Terminator Salvation is (or was) $15.99 on Best Buy's website with 99c shipping. Alternatively, in-store pickup.

If you keep an eye out, you can find blu-rays for around the $15 mark, even the good ones. They just don't necessarily get a ton of publicity at the price.

It's pretty cheap at Amazon, too. There are deals, just not as many as I was hoping for, unless you get them on special the week of release. Hoping they keep coming down as Christmas gets here. I want the default price at $20, then lower on sale, not $30.

I'm pretty sure my store just has blu rays in order for people to steal them. At 35 per movie we rarely sell any. Most of the time we would just pricematch them to other stores. And the enployees would buy them.

still pissed I fell asleep with Goodfellas, the Departed and Full Metal Jacket in my cart. Woke up and they roughly doubled in price.

It's pretty cheap at Amazon, too. There are deals, just not as many as I was hoping for, unless you get them on special the week of release. Hoping they keep coming down as Christmas gets here. I want the default price at $20, then lower on sale, not $30.

Don't disagree. I'm really not sure why the studios defaulted at $30 and $35 new on BD to begin with, since DVD prices were already fairly cheap by then.

My guess is it was some combination of:

a) fear of cannibalizing an existing, profitable market
b) desire to make as much as possible off the early adopter before the mass market transition
c) head-in-ass syndrome

One would think that the availability of players at $99 and $199 now would have the studios seeing sense on BD prices, but part of me wonders if this isn't going to turn into something like Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 gaming prices, where there was a next-gen "tax" of sorts boosting game prices up to $59.99, and then what we've seen since hasn't been $60 as a ceiling but more of $60 as a starting point, with collector's and special editions running the gamut from $79.99 all the way up to $100+.

Now if you could find some place that would trade them in at like $5 a pop it would be potentially worth it. I'd buy 100 dollars worth of store credit for 67(assuming I was planning on buying something at said store).

5 blu-ray discs for one movie? What did they put in there to fill FIVE discs?

Blu-ray Review: Blade Runner (Ultimate Collector's Ed.) | High-Def Digest (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/251/bladerunner.html)

The five discs in each set are identical: disc one contains 'The Final Cut' and several extras; the mammoth 3 hour-plus documentary "Dangerous Days" gets disc two all to itself; disc three features three additional cuts of the film accessible via seamless branching (the 1982 domestic and international versions, plus the 1992 Director's Cut); disc four houses the "Enhancement Archive," which is loaded with featurettes, deleted scenes and more; and finally, the fifth disc features the ultra-rare "Workprint Version" of 'Blade Runner' that had previously only been seen at rare theatrical screenings and on poor-quality bootlegs. Regardless of which high-def format you choose, tech specs are identical -- you'll get the same video encodes of the film (all 1080p/VC-1), plus Dolby TrueHD audio on 'The Final Cut,' and standard Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks on the other versions of the film.

Ridiculous deals on Toy Story Blu-Rays. First off, Disney has $10 off upgrade coupons for 1 & 2 if you are on the Disney Movie Rewards site and enter the UPC codes from your old DVD or VHS copies. Of course the UPCs are posted and direct links to the coupons are available, for example from SlickDeals: $10 Upgrade Coupon from DVD *or* VHS to Toy Story 1 or 2 Blu-Ray Combo Pack - SlickDeals.net Forums (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1927936)

Now, Toys R Us and Target are both offering "$10 off if you buy both" deals. So you can save $30 off the pair if you print both coupons and get them at either place. Other retailers running deals as well: Toy Story 1 & 2 Blu-Ray Combo Deals: $13.98 @ TRU / $15.98 @ Target - SlickDeals.net Forums (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=0&t=1916250)

I just got back from running errands and went through Target. My price:

+$22.99 Toy Story 1 Blu-Ray/DVD Combo
+$22.99 Toy Story 2 Blu-Ray/DVD Combo
-$10.00 bundle savings
-$10.00 Toy Story 1 upgrade coupon
-$10.00 Toy Story 2 upgrade coupon
=
$15.98 for the pair or $7.99 apiece.

Even better, the Target ones each include a DVD-ROM game (haven't played, no idea if it's any fun), but also include a code to download a ticket voucher for Toy Story 3.

So $15.98+tax got me both Blu-Rays, a pair of tickets to the movie, a pair of DVD-ROM games, and two spare DVDs that will probably let me give my old ones away.

That ain't bad 'tall.

Sweet. Really want to get these as our old discs were getting beat up from the kids handling the discs so much. If they've got vouchers for TS3, so much the better since that's likely to be the next film we'll go see in theaters.

Will be heading over to Target over lunch tomorrow to see if I can get lucky. :)

Star Wars on blu announced/confirmed today.

For the Americans, Amazon.com has pre-orders for:

Complete Saga: $89.99
Original Trilogy: $45
Prequel Trilogy: $45

For the Canadians, Amazon.ca has:

Complete Saga: $99.99
Original Trilogy: $54.99
Prequel Trilogy: $54.99

At the start of the day, Amazon.ca had the complete saga for $125.99 but thanks to BestBuy listing it at $99.99 Amazon then matched their price.

Either way, you're looking at $15-$17 per movie and amazon has the pre-order price guarantee in case the price does drop between now and when it's released. Pretty nice deal.
