anyone have any good experience or recommendations on a small business VOIP solution for about 8 users.

Ideally we are looking for the ability to do all the basics of conference calls, transfer calls, voice mail without the expense and hassle of an old school PBX.

I am really weak in tellcom and the few I have seen in the small user (5-24 users) seem to have a lot of problems.

We've been very happy with VoicePulse (http://www.voicepulse.com). I set up a AsteriskNow box with FreePBX in about half a day on a old 1Ghz Athlon machine we had sitting around. It is pretty cheap, around $10/mo for a phone line, and $0.005 to $0.015 per minute based on where you are calling.

If you need real phones, Cisco IP phones can be picked up for around $90-$100 on eBay. You can also use a softphone installed on your laptop. A good free one is Voiper.

With 8 users you may be able to get away with the free version of switchvox. Really slicks and will do anything you need. I think the free version is limited to 15 extensions though.
