I love listening to games on the radio and I was thinking of some of the best sounds you hear on a broadcast. I have a few but I'll just name one. I love the sound of a puck hitting the post. Name your favoriate.

Roar of the crowd in a tight game every time the home team does anything that could possibly give them the win.

Silence from Bill Walton.
I don't know what it is, for some reason I don't enjoy listening to him glorify the Lakers at any oppertunity he gets. Hell, the guy even talks up Mark Madsen

South American soccer commentators celebrating a national team scorring a goal are truely amazing to hear on radio.
I can't remember which country it was, but the commentator who announced a goal against England managed to include references to Maggie Thatcher, Winston Chuchill and a whole host of other subjects whilst still managing to scream goal at the top of his lungs - That will remain in my memory until I die !!
for an actual sporting sound - probably a batsman in cricket when he hits the ball perfectly.

I really like the puck on the post sound, but I'd have to go with a one-two combination of a slap-shot first, then the puck hitting the post, hard. That exact combination...

dola, a close second for me is the sound of formula one engines right at the start of the race...

A bone-jaring hit in football.

The silence just after a game winning field goal is kicked. Once the ball leaves the foot of the kicker, everyone in the stadium (either for or against the kicker) unconsciously holds their breath until the result.

That crisp sound of the ball hitting a wooden bat tops the list for me.
I love it when you can hear that sound in the cheap seats at a game.

Hah! I second the silence of Bill Walton. I hate the guy! He says the dumbest things. I swear, he once said something like:
"All you have to do against the Laker is CONTAIN Shaq! Put a body between him and the hoop, and you have a high chance at stopping him. I don't know why more teams don't do that!"
>:( That got me so angry. Like its THAT easy to stop Shaq... he also said something about how Shaq doesn't commit offensive fouls as often as people think...
I personally think he commits an offensive foul every 2nd time down the floor, AT LEAST!

I like the dead silence of an opposing college basketball arena when the visiting team wins the game. (especially on a game winning shot) It is surreal to sit and watch the visiting team celebrate on the court while the home fans either head for the door and sit around in shock trying to figure out what happened.
When a hockey player gets slammed into the boards.

Silence of Bill Walton? Do you have that on tape, not sure I've ever heard that. :D Thankfully TV's have a mute button.
Slapshot hitting the post and the crack of the bat are both tops.
Just behind that is the sound of a well hit golf shot. Can't stand to watch it on TV, but that's a sound that I don't get to hear when I play. :D

The sound of a wooden bat hitting a baseball on the sweet spot is an amazing feeling, and the first time I hear it every season, I still get goosebumps.
As much as I hate Bill Walton, he came up with one of the funniest things I've ever heard. '99, Rick Fox drives the lane in an incredibly stupid move. Walton: "What was Rick Fox thinking?" in an incredible monotone. It was classic.

I, too, love the crack of the ball off the bat.
One special part of a baseball broadcast on the radio that I really enjoy is the hometown announcer calling a close play at the plate. Something like this:
Two outs, runners on first and second, Cards down by a run. Here's the 2-2 pitch...(crack!)...Pujols drives it into the gap in right center! HERE comes Vina...he scores. HERE comes Edmonds around third...the throw from center, it's going to be close...he....isssssssss...IN THERE!!! SAFE!!! (roar of the crowd)

A free throw shot so perfectly it grazes the metal square at the back of the rim and makes that "click" noise.

I actually enjoy Bill Walton, my favorite line being:
"Throw it DOWN big man!"
For some reason that just cracks me up!
My favorite radio sound though was always the roar of the home crowd when the Jets scored a goal. I remember lying in bed with it all dark and the crowd going nuts, it felt like I was there with them.
Have I ever mentioned how much I despise Phoenix? :D

You gotta be a Laker fan to appreciate Mark Madsen.
He did shut down Kevin Garnett the past two games

Part of it is he was talking up every player on the Lakers, refering to Robert Horry as one of the premier power forwards in the league, calling Derek Fischer one of the top defensive players in the game today. Now, I'll admit that the two are good players, but not the the extent of praise Walton heaps on them at every oppertunity he gets (which is sometimes when he's doing a game without the Lakers in it).
Hell, I think I'd even rather listen to Brent Musburger announce a game rather than him.

The sound of a well-struck soccer ball is lovely.

It all depends. If I'm playing the sport, the best sound is a perfect shot in basketball. There isn't anything like hearing the net rip after you've fired up a 3. Also when you hear the ball drop into the bottom of the cup after a 20 foot putt. Sweet. :)
On TV? The crack of the bat is awsome. A LIVE shot in golf when you hear the ball crack off the flagstick. Anytime the words Shaq and offensive foul are said in the same sentence by an announcer. . . (of course, that is usually followed by: That's what SHOULD have been called)

I'm all for the silence of Walton but I'd like to extend that to Madden and Vitale as well.
Seriously, tho- bat on baseball, no comparasion.

I'm all for the clean "swoosh" when playing basketball. Everything about the shot feels perfect coming out of your hand. It's a calming feeling.

"Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good evening to you, wherever you may be..."
The sound of a perfectly hit golf ball. When I hear that, there's no need for me to look up - you just know the ball will hit the green/fairway.
I just wish I heard it a little more often though. :)
