It wasn't bad when I had them taken out. Then again, I was under (for all but about 5 seconds). Then I spent 2 days not doing much (i.e. being awake a few hours a day, the rest of the time, asleep and on codine) and didn't have any issues. Just don't be dumb and get a dry socket, trying to do too much too quickly- I've heard too many stories from people who did that and how painful it is.

I still have mine. I think I want to keep them. I'm having hand surgery tomorrow. I'm not nervous about it, though I am nervous that the surgery center hasn't called me yet for my history, etc.

Good luck with the wisdom teeth! :) We can both be on fun drugs tomorrow. :)

I had 2 pulled while I was awake and it was a piece of cake. I was only down for about 4 hours. My doc told me to stick tea bags in my mouth to help healing. I felt normal after a few hours.

Dry socket is one of the most painfull, worst, most uncomfortable experiences of my life.

I'm not sure what you mean by being dumb thought, my dentitst told me it wasn't any fault of my own and sometimes people just get it.

mine told me the same thing, apparently there is a clotting agent in tea.

never thought of this but what could a dentist do if you came in all high before the procedure? would he give you more?

I'm just going on what I was told by my dentist so grain of salt, I suppose. However, he said, sure there's a disposition for it that you can't do much about. However, a lot of people who aren't pre-disposed to it get them can by doing stuff like smoking (duh) or trying to eat "too difficult" of foods too quickly (iirc, using a straw is also an issue). Basically, don't go nuts with really hard or difficult to eat foods for a couple of days.

Ah, you should be fine as long as you don't wake up in the middle of it like I did.

Don't worry. You won't really be less wise after they're out.

I imagine if anybody came in high on opiates to a dental procedure, they probably have a problem as it is.

But considering when I had mine taken out, he gave me a ridiculous prescription of Codeine, as in my mouth was sore for a day or three yet I had a bottle full of Codeine. Same as I took a shot to the knee one day from a cow and they gave me another full bottle of Codeine. My knee was sore for a day. No other damage.

From my experience, Doctors are way too liberal with their handing out of opiates. I'm not an opiate addict but I can see how one can easily become one.

After my wisdom teeth and my knee pains subsided, the Codeine sat in the cupboard unless I had a god awful hangover. I haven't had any for probably for a year now and I'm not going to make up something for the doctor to get myself more.

But yeah, if somebody came in high, they'd probably write another prescription.

I woke up for about 5 seconds in the middle of mine and then went right back to sleep. It was an odd feeling- since everything was numb, I could feel movement and see fingers moving around in my mouth but I couldn't really "feel" it.

Ok, I'm opening myself up for this one...when I woke up the dentist was on top of me with a pair of pliers in my mouth and I kept saying, "ow!" and then he said "go back to sleep." The next thing I knew, they were waking me up and said there was a slight accident.

The dude cut the corner of my mouth, on the outside, with his scalpel! I have the scar still to prove it.

My nervousness was all for naught today.

Actual extractions, tomorrow morning at 7:45am.

I refuse to have a needle(IV) stuck in my arm, going for the numbing and gas.

If I can take a root canal with only gas and novacaine, I can take 3 wisdoms coming out.

Only real cutting is where my crown is going to be placed, removing some gum and bone, so the crown can be fitted properly.

Only thing that sucks though, is that with the football games this weekend, I won't be able to vocally cheer my team on.
Jags this weekend are up in Chicago, nothing to get worked up over, given the Jags bad luck season.

Dentist did give me a couple valiums to take before the extractions though.
I also have vicodin available for afterwards.

Just hope you don't wake up with the dentist and nurse buttoning thier clothes, a la Seinfeld.

IV Needle >>>>>>> Gas + Novacaine.

Either way, good luck :)

I had my bottom 2 out when I was younger, just had novacaine. The dentist was like 80 and had one leg on the chair trying to rip them out of my mouth. That sucked.

I'm getting the top 2 out at the end of the month. IV all the way for that one.

I got all four of mine done at the same time. Was back at work two days later, no problems at all...

Edit: Oh, and I got the IV. I hate needles, but it wasn't bad. They stuck it in, the doc started to talk to be about NBA hoops, and then the next thing I know the nurse is waking me up.

Yeah, that's kindof a freaky experience- one minute you're talking or thinking and the next you're waking up a couple of hours later

i was so fine after mine. i went out late that night and had a milkshake and french fries with my friends.

had a bottle of percocet, and only took (IIRC) like 3 of them, and those were all the day of the surgery (I had it in the morning) and before bed that night.

3 wisdoms out, ordeal done.

I went with the gas and novacaine, felt a little pressure when the dentist was taking them out. Other than that, just a mouthful of gauze and bloody spit.

Can I ask why three?

I'm going to have some tugged myself in the near future, so I've been following this thread with interest.

When I had mine pulled, it was three as well. The fourth one wasn't growing weird or something, so they left it in.

I could probably get some serious sleep, now that the suckers have stopped bleeding and oozing.

I should be feeling better in a few days.

dola,

why do we get wisdom teeth if they do nothing?

From wikipedia, of course:

Wisdom teeth are vestigial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestigial) third molars. In earlier times, when tooth loss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tooth_loss) in early adulthood was common, an additional molar had the potential to fill in a gap left by the loss of another tooth. It has also been postulated that the skulls of human ancestors had larger jaws with more teeth, which were possibly used to help chew down foliage to compensate for a lack of ability to efficiently digest the cellulose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulose) that makes up a plant cell wall. As human diet changed, a smaller jaw was selected (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selection) by evolution, yet the third molars, or "wisdom teeth", still commonly develop in human mouths.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_teeth#cite_note-11)

So, I'm getting mine pulled in about a month. Dentist wants to do the two on the left one day and the other two on the right a few weeks later.

Aside from the complications of having my entire head numbed, is there any other logic to this choice that anybody is aware of?
