The NFLPA filed suit to block the suspensions of everybody suspended this past week...except the long snapper. Then there's this little gem:

Thursday’s lawsuit does not include Houston Texans long snapper Bryan Pittman. David Cornwell, Pittman’s lawyer, told the AP that his client isn’t included because his circumstances “differ substantially from the men who used StarCaps.” Cornwell said he didn’t think a challenge by Pittman would succeed.

I'm not sure if the lawyer's saying "look, he's a long snapper - no chance he'd be taken seriously," or if the NFLPA is basically saying "Why should we bother to defend that nancy-boy? This is a man's league."

I guess the alternative is that the lawyer is saying "eh, he's guilty, and therefore fucked," but the NFLPA have their head in the sand on the other players.

I think it's probably something closer to the "alternative." I would assume Pittman didn't take the Starcaps supplements or whatever they are, but rather was suspended for taking something else.

So that is the stuff that got all of these players in trouble. It does seem a little weird that athletes with access to professional nutritionists etc., are using some concoction hawked by a pseudo-celebrity.

They initially felt they wanted a short or medium snapper. These have, in the past, served the purpose quite nicely. Rumor was they had a long snapper once who gave the entire 1988 team quite severe rashes that required medical attention and letters of regret to the players wives.

If you go back even further, it was a young Frank Gifford who carried on a torrid affair with a long snapper in '60 that some say cost the team a chance at beating the hated Packers.

I have never been a fan of the long snapper, but I don't propose to tell the Giants administration and their legal counsel how to run their private affairs. I will say this, and I mean this very much. I challenge you to find one long snapper, in the long history of the NFL, or the hardcore pornography industry who has ever, in the long run, been happy to be a long snapper. They may go through the motions, and make sounds at all the right moments, and, hey, sometimes they might come through in the clutch. But, when you really need one, somewhere down the road, they will come up short.

I take it to mean that the long snapper had the diuretic in his system from a source other than StarCaps, and that he has no "well, it wasn't listed as an ingredient" defense.

As a Saints fan, I wish that the Saints players at issue would just take the suspension now and get it over with. They are effectively out of the playoffs, and I would rather them serve it now instead of spend weeks on an appeal, lose, and have to spend 1-4 weeks at the beginning of next season on suspension. Especially Charles Grant, who is on IR this season and so REALLY would not affect anything if he just got this out of the way now.

I heard Pittman on ESPN shortly after the suspensions were announced and he said something to the effect that he wanted no part of the move to block the suspensions. He intends to serve his suspension even though he says he did not knowingly use steroids/illegal substances ever. Good for him I say.

yeah what I remember hearing/reading was that he admitted he unknowingly took a banned substance, but it wasn't star caps or steroids and he would just accept his suspension.

According to KRIV in Houston (via ESPN), Texans long snapper Bryan Pittman did not take StarCaps, and thus will not challenge his four-game suspension for violating the league’s steroids policy.

Pittman reportedly took a banned diuretic via a mechnism other than StarCaps, and tested positive for it.

“I want the people and the fans to understand that I was not trying to mask steroids or any banned substances,” Pittman said, per KRIV.

“I thought I took the proper procedures and methods by getting a doctor’s authorization to take the diuretic,” Pittman said. “The diuretic I took did not dilute any urine specimen, which is what a player does when they are trying to mask something. The NFL toxicologist confirmed there was nothing else in my specimen other than the diuretic.”
