I bought my wife an iPhone last year and I haven't upgraded my phone in over 7 years. Now all of her friends have blackberrys and they instant message eachother and she wants the blackberry so she can blackberry message her friends as well instead.

Since I haven't upgraded in awhile, does anyone know if its possible for me to take her iPhone, have the number changed to mine, and then buy her a blackberry with her number? This way I don't have to buy the $200 iPhone and buy her a blackberry, I can just buy her a blackberry.

Also, for someone not using Blackberry for work, which one would be the best one to buy?

Well, what you can do is upgrade your phone to the blackberry and I'm assuming that both you and your wife are on the same plan, to just switch the sim card. But, I'm not sure how the sim card part of it works. I am pretty sure that you have to upgrade yours to a blackberry first before you switch.

Your local AT&T store can make the switch for you.

Two new blackberry models just came out. I think the Storm is only good with Verizon, but the Bold is pretty solid. As an old standby the Curve works just fine.

If its the same as UK phones then the phone number is built into the Sim card and so long as you're both on the same provider (or the phones unlocked) you can just switch the SIM cards around and you're good to go.

(I believe this is the case because I used my unlocked UK phone with my US AT&T account for a while by swapping sims)

So in essence - if you get a free phone on your account because you haven't upgraded, take a blackberry - swap sim cards over and you should be good to go (I think).
