Snow in Central Texas!

A pretty big cold front blew through this evening, and now I'm seeing huge snowflakes in my backyard. It is even starting to accumulate a bit. Pretty surprising, considering it's been over 70 degrees that past few days, all the way up until about 2pm today.

I heard the wind rustling pretty heavy last night so we opened the door and felt a really cold gust of wind coming in and I told my girl that I wouldn't doubt it if we saw sleet or snow... but we didn't get anything; at least not by the time I went to bed.

We had 10 inches of snow yesterday. It was awesome!

It snowed in Dallas on NYE. 9 months later, 6 of us were born within 3 weeks of eachother.

Since it has been so warm the last few days, I didn't think any of it would stick over night. But there was still a tiny bit this morning. My neighbor's roof and raised plant bed is still covered, and there is a dusting in my yard.

Well as it turns out, we did have snow. Dunno how much we had but after dropping our daughter at the bus stop, we saw it on the cars and on the grass. By 9:30 most of it was melted.

Predictions are that we will get snow in the Baton Rouge area tonight. Kids I saw are very excited. Some of them have never seen snow.

We got loads of snow on Monday night/Tuesday. I need to take my camera with me one of these days, because it's really impressive to see snow piled up in the parking lots as high as the buildings, but the view outside the apartment window doesn't quite match that.

Snow is actually starting to accumulate here now. Only the 3rd accumulated snowfall in New Orleans in 30+ years, and the earliest snow fall ever. (Since weather records have been kept.)

I just got to work. Wife tells me we have 3-4 inches in our yard now. She and the neighbors (and their kids) have built a 4-5 foot high "snowchick." I'll try to post pictures later. Meanwhile, I sit at work knowing that I probably won't see a single patient all day and wondering if the Governor might sensibly close offices as the roads were very treacherous (this area just isn't prepared for this kind of wintery precipitation) with me passing over a half dozen accidents on the way to work.

When I lived in Kentucky, I just drove on idle at the sign of any snowfall. But its all good, up north people seem to lose the ability to drive well in the kind of rainstorm southerns would call a minor shower.

You have to love state bureaucracy. WAFB (a local station) is reporting that state workers don't have to report to work. Of course, about a half dozen (of 30 or so in this office) workers are already here. Our bosses still don't know if they can send us home or not and are trying to contact the Governor's office (which has presumably already let WAFB know before telling all of their agencies.)

Well, having lived in both areas, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

1) There are no plows or salt trucks. Small towns in Wisconsin have more plows than Houston or New Orleans
2) The south has these things called "overpasses". Combined with point 1, this is a big problem.
3) Let's not brag about how good KC is in snow. I mean, really, they think they can drive in it but they're badly mistaken.

We built a 3 foot tall snowman last night. It could have been taller. Alas, just about all of the snow was gone in the morning. Still, the kids had a blast in it yesterday.

my dad just called. he and my mom were supposed to go to new orleans today. when they were 50 miles out, the airport shut down, they got diverted to nashville, where they are now waiting to fly standby into new orleans (my brother is living there and it's his birthday which is why they're heading down that way).

#2 is a huge problem. As much as I was upset at the state for not calling off work earlier, I feel really bad for a bunch of drivers who are completely stuck on the interstate as the I-10 Bridge over the Mississippi River has been closed for several hours now, and people are just completely stuck there with no where to go. The line goes back for miles from what I've heard.

Oh, I'll agree with that. There are far too many Derrick Thomas impersonators in the area. They manage to take a 4x4 and put it in the ditch going 70 MPH.

But the vast majority of people in this area know to go slow and steady. It works surprisingly well.

We have snow and shitty driving conditions for usually 6 months a year and yet we still have douchebags who think their tires and their vehicles are from another world...one where gravity is 5 times stronger. Mind boggling.

In fact, on my way in this morning the roads were a little greasy as things have warmed up enough to melt some of the ice/snow on the roads. In these conditions you just never know what your car is going to do when you hit the brakes yet there was a moron practically in my trunk.

For all that seems to matter! In a six-hour span YESTERDAY (after the storm was gone) I came across a t-bone fender bender and a car that went off the on-ramp into the ditch. Both with Wisconsin plates.

Even when the roads are plowed, there are folks who can't seem to handle it.
