BBC NEWS | Middle East | Shoes thrown at Bush on Iraq trip (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7782422.stm)
A surprise visit by US President George Bush to Iraq has been overshadowed by an incident in which two shoes were thrown at him during a news conference.
An Iraqi journalist was wrestled to the floor by security guards after he called Mr Bush "a dog" and threw his footwear, just missing the president.
The soles of shoes are considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture.
During the trip, Mr Bush and Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki signed the new security agreement between their countries.
The pact calls for US troops to leave Iraq in 2011 - eight years after the 2003 invasion that has in part defined the Bush presidency.
Speaking just over five weeks before he hands over power to Barack Obama, Mr Bush also said the war in Iraq was not over and more work remained to be done.
His previously unannounced visit came a day after US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told US troops the Iraq mission was in its "endgame".
In the middle of the news conference with Mr Maliki, a reporter stood up and shouted "this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog," before hurtling his shoes at Mr Bush, narrowly missing him.
"All I can report is a size 10," Mr Bush said according to the Associated Press news agency.
The shoe thrower was taken away by security guards and the news conference continued.
Correspondents called it a symbolic incident. Iraqis threw shoes and used them to beat Saddam Hussein's statue in Baghdad after his overthrow.

Very nimble move. Pretty amazing first throw by the journalist too. Shoes are tough to throw. I'd imagine my first few throws would have sailed high or embeded in the podium. He must have practiced to get off two pretty accurate throws like that.
Not quite as good as his dad booting on the Japanese prime minister, but still a nice way to go out on a high note.

Pretty nutty that he even got the first one off, you would think as soon as someone stands when they are not supposed to that either he or the president would be tackled by a secret service agent about two seconds later. Good thing the president (whatever his faults) has ninja-like reflexes.

The embed video cuts off a bit early. Right as Bush ducks the second shoe, you'll see a guy in a suit coming in from the left hand side of the screen. That's the personal Secret Service guy for Bush. That guy was going to take Bush out of the room, but you'll notice if you watch a longer video clip that Bush waves him off and smiles. Pretty impressive that Bush wanted to stay in the batter's box after ducking two beanballs disguised as Size 10 shoes. Most people would have bailed assuming the next object would be a grenade considering it's still a war zone.

First I agree with the props to Bush for his move.
I do see the security issue as troubling though. I've seen longer clips as well and the Secret Service does move in. I'm willing to give the Secret Service a little break here since presumably the journalists entering were screened for weapons and so their guard was placed differently than in a more public event.
Either that or Secret Service agents have to take bullets for the President but not shoes :).

Sadly, there's been infinitely more coverage of the Illinois governor than this:
http://levin.senate.gov/newsroom/release.cfm?id=305735
"On February 7, 2002, President George W. Bush made a written determination that Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, which would have afforded minimum standards for humane treatment, did not apply to al Qaeda or Taliban detainees. Following the President’s determination, techniques such as waterboarding, nudity, and stress positions, used in SERE training to simulate tactics used by enemies that refuse to follow the Geneva Conventions, were authorized for use in interrogations of detainees in U.S. custody."...
"The abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib in late 2003 was not simply the result of a few soldiers acting on their own. Interrogation techniques such as stripping detainees of their clothes, placing them in stress positions, and using military working dogs to intimidate them appeared in Iraq only after they had been approved for use in Afghanistan and at GTMO. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s December 2, 2002 authorization of aggressive interrogation techniques and subsequent interrogation policies and plans approved by senior military and civilian officials conveyed the message that physical pressures and degradation were appropriate treatment for detainees in U.S. military custody. What followed was an erosion in standards dictating that detainees be treated humanely."
They deserve to have a hell of a lot more than shoes thrown at them.
