Hey, Matt Millen's on NBC to discuss the games.

Will he say something like "I don't know how they made it here, I wouldn't have done anything they would have!"

SirFozzie

Ladanian Tomlinson: Questionable, with a detatched tendon to his groin? Yeowww!

DaddyTorgo
01-03-2009, 03:08 PM
from what McGinest said there is like no way Tomlinson will play. He said earlier on NFL Network that he had the same injury one time and managed to make it ONE PLAY before having to take himself out for the day

Chief Rum

Did Millen say "I really like the wide receivers on both teams." ??

SirFozzie
01-03-2009, 03:11 PM
There's a joke in there about Millen's preference for WR, but I won't even go NEAR there.

Millen was always a pretty good announcer.

nice 1st quarter for the Cards, couple sacks, actual signs of life in the running game, stopping Turner and a great TD

Falcons looking good now after the INT. They just need to bench Lawyer Malloy. And the refs need to start calling offsides on Arizona's D.

Yeah, I don't usually like to get all over the refs for missing calls against my team as I figure calls go both ways at some point, but it is getting a bit rediculous. The last guy was across the line and had almost knocked over the blocking back before a whistle even blew.

I have a decent excuse for why that was spelled wrongly :) I usually am a lousy speller, and depend heavily on firefox's spell corrector to make sure that I don't look too much like an idiot in my posts. Tonight I have toddler duty, and she wants to watch Lazytown on the tv, so I am watching the falcons game through my slingbox on my laptop and not really looking at what I am typing :)

Nice to see the same old Cardinals returned in the 2nd quarter. Arizona has 5 straight carries for 32 years (6.4 ypc). After that, Arizona throws 7 straight incomplete passes. I just can't understand why they don't even try a run after that early success. But there's a lot about the Cardinals I don't understand.

DaddyTorgo
01-03-2009, 05:19 PM

As I watch Tiki Barber perform his sideline reporter duties, I think back to all the BS he was spewing during his self-publicized retirement tour, about how he was going to move on to bigger and better things. He really thought he was going to be on 60 minutes interviewing presidential candidates and other world leaders.

Instead he's getting injury updates from waterboys.

Now the refs are screwing the Cardinals. That was a pretty obvious hold there on Fitz.

Alan T

Looks like the no-penalty calls are coming back to favor the Falcons in the second half to make up for the ones in the first half. Falcons really need a good drive here, they have looked rattled most of the second half

Alan T
01-03-2009, 06:39 PM
Well, a little disappointed that the Falcons won't be winning this one. I feel partially that we were "playing on house money" so to speak though, as we went much further then I expected to start the season.

Looking at this team, I don't feel this was a last chance to win, but instead a start of something big. I hope next year that Atlanta can address some huge holes in the defense and build upon this season rather than just take a big step back as they have always done in the past.

I agree with you actually Alan, I worry a bit about a sophomore slump from Ryan after these last two games he played, but overall there is miles and miles more of hope and good news in Atlanta than there has been for a while. They had an incredible season though and they should be proud of that.

I do think ATL will struggle next season. Ryan will improve, but this is the most carriers in Turners career, and I cannot help but wonder how he'll hold up next year.

If Turner goes down, this team is going tp be in deep trouble.

Now on the flipside, if Turner stays healthy and Ryan developes as he should, they'll be a contender in the South.

Still, those could be two big if's.

Thomkal
01-03-2009, 06:55 PM
Oh and Go Cards! What a reilef to get that playoff monkey off their backs. Their defense is still going to be their downfall in the playoffs, but if they can keep that running game going it may not matter too much.

Now I'm pulling for the Eagles to win tomorrow so the Cards get Carolina instead of the Giants. Yeah the Panthers have beaten them 5 straight times, including this season, but it was the closest game the Cards had against an East Coast team, and the weather should be a lot nicer than in likely will be in NY. And the Panthers don't scare me as much as the Giants do overall.

Such a great drive by the Chargers there ruined by that fumble. Rivers and Sproles are shredding the Colts D. This game is heading for a Peyton Manning last minute drive for the win or a Nate Kaeding choke job.

SirFozzie
01-03-2009, 09:36 PM
Wow. Huge plays by Rivers, two good (run for 16, QB Sneak on 4th and inches), then one bad (horrible throw, intercepted in the end zone)

Jas_lov
01-03-2009, 09:36 PM
And another terrible turnover for the Chargers. Two great chances to at least tie and no points. Rivers had a sick 3rd down run and Norv pulled out all the stops on that 4th down, but just a terrible throw by Rivers after that.

Even though I had money on the Colts... being in New Orleans, I can definitely go with this sentiment. I can only take so much of Archie's drawl amidst gobs of Manning ass-kissing. It's really bad down here even when they're not both in the playoffs.

Game ball has to go to the Chargers punter.. He is the only reason the Chargers made it to OT. The overtime drive was about the only drive a great length for the San Diego the whole game, which was aided by a couple of penalties. I didn't agree with the two holding penalties at all. The first one I thought was terrible, and the second just a little touchy for a play like that where the protection breaks down.

Have to give it to the Chargers though. My buddy and I were really hoping LT would be playing because we knew the Colts couldn't tackle Sproles. When he gets going north and south he is a tough guy to bring down.

People said the same thing about Turner and people have been saying the same type of thing about Sproles since high school. I can't count him out.

He was already going to cash a check in the offseason but he's just inflating it right now. He's a good kid -- good for him.
Honestly the Colts need a guy like Sproles.. I am so tired of not having a good returner and game breaker.

*sigh* and of course the defensive failings at the beginning of teh season are Norv's fault, and losing their best defensive player for the season was Norv's fault and the Officiating that cost them 2 games was Norv's fault.

Seriously, is there anything you can't blame on Norv? I'm not trying to say I want him as my team's coach, but why continue beating a dead horse?

This team was 4-8, they were playing awfully and seemed to have no hope. Now if you blame all of the BAD on Norv, you also have to give him credit for all the GOOD, now, don'tcha?

Get over it already.

I don't get the hate for the Chargers kicking the FG on 4th and 1 with 30 seconds left. It was an easy FG to get the game to OT. If you go for it and don't get it, game over. If you go for it and get it, you've got no timeouts and about 20 seconds. Spike it and you have 2 shots at the endzone which I don't think it worth it in that situation.

The worse play by Norv and Rivers was spiking it with 55 seconds left with the ball on the 20 which I mentioned earlier. That only gave them 2 plays to get the 1st which came up big when Sproles was 1 yard short of the 1st down. There was plenty of time, just get to the line and run a play.

Colts couldn't run, or stop the run, and overall the offense just seemed to disappear for long stretches.

When you factor in that the Colts scored a TD when half the Chargers didn't know the ball was snapped, and the Chargers turned it over twice in scoring position....San Diego deserves the win.

I'm using hurt == injured interchangeably here. The fact is if you honestly believe a player of the calibur of talent that LT is would willingly CHOOSE to sit out the second half of a playoff game then I think you're more than a little boneheaded.

If if the team doctors checked him out and said he could go, he'd have been in there. Did you watch the first half? he was coming up limping on every run and couldn't make a cut to save his life. There was obviously a physical issue. Could he have played? if Sproles weren't lighting up the Colts defense like a pornagraphic Vegas light show? probably he would have.

I just think its seriously pretentious to make statements as if you actually know something to be a fact when its painfully obvious you haven't a real clue. based on his performance on the field I'm willing to put my faith far more in LT's judgement and the team's than in Detox's venomous rantings.

As an example: I despise Joe montana. The man was a glass jawed whiner who fell into the single greatest system for a QB of his kind and he rode that for all it was worth. he had superstars around him at almost every position. I think he's far more overrated than many other QB's.

HOWEVER, based on what his numbers and his team's performances show, I still rank him in the top 10 of all time QB's. I can hate the man and still respect what he and the team does. I also don't spew such things in the middle of discussion of the team's sucess with or without him.

As I said earlier, it was just a stupid thing to say WHEN he said it. he has every right to think it, he's just a bonehead for spewing it in a thread talking about teh team's success tonight.

I think as a fan of a team, it kind of diminishes things for me once you start getting behind multiple teams that passionately. Now the Falcons are out of the playoffs, I'll probably cheer for underdogs to win because that is fun. But it doesn't bother me one way or another what happens to them. All I truly care about every week is the Falcons winning and the 49ers losing :)

It wasn't the fourth down play. It was the first down spike as you say and then the play that really got me was the draw to Sproles. They were already at a distance their kicker could make so why not go for the win. You lose the toss and maybe you don't even get another chance. It paid off for them in the end though.

Romagoth. Lol, we gave him some shit for that one.

Overall I really enjoyed both games. I was bummed to see the Colts go down because I really wanted a Manning-Manning superbowl. I hated to holding call in overtime, I don't think it was obvious enough for the official to make a call there that results in an automatic first down.

I also think this shows a change is needed in the OT rules. IMO is is absurd that in a playoff game one team doesn't even get to touch the ball in OT.

That being said, the Chargers deserved the win and Sproles was a monster. He will look good in a Bengals uniform.

Matter of time I suppose until someone thinks this game is some sort of "argument" for this long standing position. If you don't want your team to lose without touching the ball in overtime, you have a ton of options to avoid that woefully unfair plight. Scoring enough so that you can't be tied by a short-drive FG is one of them. Stopping the other team, during any of thee important drives in question, is another. Not collapsing with idiotic penalties when the other team gets the ball in OT would be another good strategy to pursue on that front.

I'm not trying to suggest the system is perfect, but this age-old argument about how each team needs to have a "fair" chance doesn't get strengthened when this setup happens in another game. We get it, we've seen it before, we know it's possible, we know it happens, even in big games.

If you don't want the game to be decided by one drive, or one play, or one call, or whatever ends up seeming unjust to you after it's over... then outplay the other team and eliminate all doubt with your margin of victory.

Barkeep49
01-04-2009, 11:03 AM
Quik I think that supposes games end the 4Q tied due to some sort of deficiency on the part of the teams playing. I think you could conversely say that due to the skill required to achieve the tie that both teams deserve a chance to display that skill in the OT.

All this can simply be avoided if people would stop using "we", "us", "your", "my" in refering to sports teams, unless you work for them. That is so immature and moronic. Just my opinion....if a game goes to OT, the entire quarter should be played no matter what. Like having a 2nd fourth quarter. Regular season, game ends in a tie, playoffs if still tied, just move onto the next quarter.

A lot of what the NFL (and other sports leagues) are about is putting the best and most popular products on the field to ensure maximum revenues. I think minimizing the chance of injuries to the best and most popular products plays into sudden death or shootout overtimes, and probably lack of college playoffs, to some extent.

What you're essentially saying is that if you find yourself in an overtime game, you didn't deserve to win. Of course, that is true for both teams in an overtime game.

But I don't grant the premise that is always true or that it was true in this case. As much as I've seen people say that San Diego outplayed Indianapolis, the fact is that the Chargers were in overtime because they made plenty of mistakes too.

By this logic, why bother playing overtime at all? Why not just flip the coin to choose the winner?

I really don't see the harm in ensuring at a minimum that both teams get a possession in OT. What is the harm in doing something that makes more sense?

You probably are right that it is immature. Rooting for the teams that I have since I was a child probably is pretty childish in its own right though. I have not staked anything in the team, so shouldn't derive any pleasure from their success or disappointment from their failure, yet I still do.

I probably could be far more mature and productive by focusing only on the sports I do play (now limited pretty much to just bowling, tennis and an "over-the-hill" softball league), but the child in me still longs to see "my" teams win and do well. So I can easily see others that have the same passion for "their" teams in whichever sport it may be. I just get confused when people talk about 2, 3 , 4 or more teams as "theirs" as I then don't necessarily find where the passion is coming from or at least don't understand it or can not relate.

My original post was meant more to be fun then any kind of attack and I don't think I agree with your taking it to the next level. I do think you are correct in what you say, but I am not a completely logical being without feeling, so sometimes I do likely do things that are immature I suppose (such as derive far too much pleasure in "my" team from childhood).

"your" Colts?

I thought you were a Dolphins fan.

The Colts have become my favorite team over the past 5 years or so. I've never really regained my feelings for the Dolphins after the Jimmy Johnson/Dave Wannstedt/Saban/Cameron debacles. My rooting interests have been swayed heavily toward the Colts over that period. I was happy to see the Dolphins do better this year, but I doubt I could name 10 players on the current roster. It doesn't help that I have a real dislike for Bill Parcells. Usually, if the Colts and the Dolphins were on at the same time, I was watching the Colts.

Honestly, giving a shit about the fortunes of a team of millionaires from your city of choice is pretty irrational in itself. But obviously, people do feel something about their teams for whatever reason. At the end of the day, it is entertainment. It gives you a chance to see "good vs. evil" played out in an entertaining manner. Life is more interesting with sports than without them, even if they don't really matter in any way aside from affecting the economy of the cities they are located in.

The thing that I probably reaction against in the team personalization is the flip side - the depression, anger, upset, etc. of when your personal team loses. I see that in my young son and to me, it is not healthy and both my wife and I are trying to teach him to be more even keel. Such immature behavior extends to adult and I have personally witnessed spousal abuse, anger and temper tantrums to others, substance abuse and poor work performance after a painful loss (and to some extent, internet rages) and that's where it becomes moronic. That's not worth it, imo. I also think destructive celebrations after a big win is moronic too, imo. Being lazy? That's cool though. :)

I think that the many fans that are in fantasy leagues help a lot. They end up not seeing things (teams, players, leagues) in so extreme or black&white manner. There are a lot of good performances and games being played, regardless of the emotions tied to the uniform.

The thing that is becoming clear is we are lucky to be in the playoffs and we're missing a top flight receiver.

No I meant the game but unless I am missing something.

Fucking faggot ass whorebitch Ginn. Fucking probably slobbing Cam Cameron's fucking drafting ass after that fumble.

Wow, Izulde has reached the point where his cursing as obscured whatever he's trying to say. I can tell he's mad, though. I wouldn't blame Ginn too much for that, if was a blown play all around.

Fuck you, Cameron. Come back as a head coach and do something.

Like go 1-15?

Were expectations that high for the Dolphins?

I'm referring to him celebrating his "revenge" against us. I'm saying, he can celebrate when he comes back as a head coach and beats the Dolphins. Until then, he's one of the shittiest head coaches in NFL history.

If I were a Dolphins fan I'd be happy with the season, surely nobody actually expected them to win the SB even after they made the playoffs, so what's the difference between going out this round or the next? It was a great season regardless.

Oh, I'm happy about this season. Shit, I was happy when we won the 2nd game when we got to 8 wins, and then when we won the division.

It's a great season, but that doesn't mean I'm not upset about the ending or still bitter about Cam Cameron.

I don't think Cameron should be talking about revenge at all, since it was his mess, so what is he getting revenge over?

But without his dog of a season Miami doesn't get Jake Long, Sporano, Ireland, Parcells ect. Especially if they limp to a 7-9 or 8-8 season last year. So he did Miami a favor.

It's really, really, really early, however, I gotta say that McNabb has impressed me so far today. He's had a quick release against a really good Viking pass rush, and has shown some of that escapability of old.

Nice to see Akers kicking better. Of course, it'd be nicer to see the offense finish a drive. However, overall I've also been impressed by McNabb today.

This game continues to show why I hate Childress so much. LOL

Ugggh.. I am still very confident the Vikings defense will play well enough to keep the Vikings in it and eventually allow the Vikings to win this one.

LOL @ the announcers complimenting the wrong quarterback. "Tarvaris has been great so far...." Uhhhhhh... He's made two passes he should have made and threw an out about 5 yards too far out on a key play. I like TJ a lot but he's been sub par so far.

Eagles defense not being aggressive enough on third downs.

EDIT: Dawkins lost a certain interception in the Metrodome lights.

What a job by the Offensive Line of Minnesota. Peterson wasn't even touched until he was going into the end zone.
