Well it's another year in the books. I'll probably have a playlist eventually. But for the time being, you can check out the site The Hype Machine (http://hypem.com/). It aggregates MP3s from all around the web, it's a nice way to get a cross-section of indie tracks that you can play almost instantly as opposed to having to garage sale around for it. Other people listen to good stuff, so surely they'll post it.

Happy New Year.

Always liked reggae (or reggae influenced mostly in this case) music a decent amount. I am not a one trick pony with punk. It's not another Bob Marley faze for me though, right now I am really into Slightly Stoopid.

Have also been listening to some older crap from the past like 88 Fingers Louie (punk), and oddly enough (this one is a bit out of the norm for me) Ben Folds. I just got his Way To Normal album.

Asher Roth is like the White Kanye West, except he's not a producer. Oh and Jay-Z turned him down. Akon later signed him. He takes a Jay-Z track and flipped it.

This year I'm broadening my musical horizons by visiting RCRDLBL (hxxp://rcrdlbl.com/) and checking out their daily MP3's.
(Edited to hxxp the link, as when I went there today/just now, there was a definite NSFW image on the front page, album art for one of the artists).

At the moment listening to The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, which is probably more mainstream than a lot of others.

Any Northeasterner's out there heard of the Rustic Overtones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rustic_Overtones)? I was introduced to this band a year or so ago while listening to NPR. These guys absolutely rock. They are out of Maine and from what I've read basically all of the gigs they've done as of late have been in New England.

Anyway, besides RO I'm still enjoying my regular stuff when I'm in the mood for music. Love Jones (All-Time #1 Fave), Squirrel Nut Zippers (will be seeing them in concert in a couple of months), Royal Crown Revue, among others. I am big into the swingey, jazzy and big band stuff.

Right now I am listening the heck of out Tyvek's FAST Metabolism (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000T2D39Y/ref=dm_sp_adp). It's catchy, silly, stupid garage rock. Best songs are "Needles Drop" "Give It Up" and supremely silly "Honda."

Also enjoying Unhistories (http://www.amazon.com/Unhistories-Singer/dp/B00139LU7O/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1232674531&sr=8-1) by Singer. These guys are ex-US Maple, if that's a touching point for you. Similar off-kilter stuff, but more cohesive and with singing rather than growling, murmuring and mumblings.

EDIT TO ADD:

It's an older album, but I've only gotten into This Ain't a Hate Thing, It's a Love Thing (http://www.amazon.com/This-Aint-Hate-Thing-Love/dp/B000TPXM1U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1232680572&sr=8-1)by Lords. It's a bluesy/rock n roll type record but with odd time signatures and unexpected riffs. Surprisingly catchy (in my head right now).

Also, on a jazz tip, the Mary Halvorson Trio's Dragon (http://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Head/dp/B001L1ICDO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1232680984&sr=8-2) is the jazz record I wish I could have made. Guitar, bass and drums interweaving, creating unusual textures but avoiding free jazz skronk. Great stuff.

Lindsey Buckingham - Gift of Screws

I am a fan. His solo career has been spotty but his 1992 Out of the Cradle (currently selling for $6.99 at Amazon) is one of my very favorite albums. To my delight, his recent release is pretty damn similar. Truly amazing guitar work, some beautiful songwriting, slick production. I predict this one stays in my rotation for a long, long time. Amazon customers rate this one at 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. It gets a 5 from me, easy.

I'll second Old Crow Medicine show. They are absolutely tremendous.

I'm also really digging Southern Tenant Folk Union (http://www.southerntenantfolkunion.com/) of late. They are actually British, not Southern as their name and music they play would imply.

Whole Wheat Bread

They just came out with a new album a couple weeks ago. This band is a band I can't figure out how I really feel about. They call their music Dirty South Punk. To me a good amount of it tends to lean towards a pop sound, pop-punk basically. There was a time when I liked bands with that sound but grew tired of it when it became very whinny.

It's not always a straight pop-punk sound though, and I think I like them for the most part. I think. I will probably tire of them. I know they are working with Lil'Jon on his new album called Crunk Rock, which has me wondering what that will sound like.

Yeah, I heard them last year sometime. Other than the novelty of being black guys who wear hip hop clothes and stuff, they're not really that special. I mean, they sound like any sort of punk band with a pop edge. It's catchy, but I think they're just one of those bands that sticks out and will get a following because of the novelty and marketing, more because of them being any good.

I tried to get into it, but it just couldn't stick...

Kind of my feeling I think, and I probably won't stick with them long. The tracks I head from the new album sounds better then their first one overall, but I still can't decide if I will get the album. Probably not since after I gave that a listen I swung the other way and started to check out the new The Mongoloids EP. NY hardcore music is definitely the other side of the punk spectrum. :)

I am all over the map right now. Heck, I am burning This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb and Rosa to CD right now to take with me in the car in a bit. They are both considered folk-punk. Put that together with the Ben Folds I got and I may end up having multiple personalities.

Other than that, i'm somewhat nostalgic and have started to listen again to all the good old punk rock that got me into guitar playing 15 yeas ago, like Bad Religion, Pennywise, Lag Wagon, NOFX, etc.

I've been doing a lot of listening to the 9.6.08 DMB concert from Berkeley. It's an IEM (in-ear monitor), meaning you can hear the conversations going on between the band members in-between songs. The 2008 tour was considered to be their best in a decade, despite the loss of sax player LeRoi Moore.

My favorite from this particular show is their Anyone Seen The Bridge?, a little song played as an segue to another song (normally, it went from So Much To Say to Too Much, but in '08, they played it into a lot of different songs, including Halloween, which is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard). They added a stop-time part to the song, and it was really cool to listen to them set it up on the fly. Carter Beauford, the dummer, actually set it up to play a part of another song (Tripping Billies) and they just went with it. Pure awesomeness.

So they changed their setlist on the fly during the show? I didn't know bands typically coordinate songs through IEMs but that's pretty cool.

So they changed their setlist on the fly during the show? I didn't know bands typically coordinate songs through IEMs but that's pretty cool.

They would decide, normally, what to play after ASTB. What I'm saying is that they decided the format of ASTB (how the stop-time measure would go) on the fly, and that they did it in the form of one of their most popular songs on the fly. Carter said "Check this out", and he started to sing the beats of the song. Dave figured it out and said that was cool, and they went with it.

They have, on several occasions, played a song due to a crowd chant. The best from 08 was during the only sax-less show in the group's history, on August 5th in Cincinnati. The crowd started up a massive Halloween chant. The band responded by going into Everyday, which is a very uplifting, love-everyone song. They played the intro for about two minutes, at which point Carter comes in with a little drums, and the song begins. When it came time for Carter to go into it, he did the drums for Halloween, and they went directly into it. The best is hearing the collective gasp from the crowd, and then total bedlam. Then they ended up teasing other songs a few shows down the road, and going right into Halloween. It's one of their rarer songs (they hadn't played back-to-back Halloweens in 13 years until this past tour), so it was awesome.

I haven't really got anything that current on my playlist. My guilty pleasure of late is Katy Perry, who I've tried not to like for a long, long time. And regardless of what my wife and oh, so hip female friends think, I was digging her before I ever even saw her.
My Limewire is f'ed up and the guy at the local record store has actually threatened my life (or so I've heard, the pussy), so I've been relying on friends for mix CDs, which is a nice change of pace. The new Alanis songs I've heard are really, really good and I'm digging what I've heard from Rogue Wave, Kings of Leon, Dance Gavin Dance new Foo Fighters and MGMT. I'm not into the Vampire Weekend thing though, and I can't figure out why.
Mostly though, I've been on a retro kick which has included everything from At the Drive-In to Velvet Underground. I've been rediscovering Pearl Jam's "Ten," the whole Danzig era Misfits catalogue, Queen, The Buzzcocks, and what little we had of Rites of Spring. Failure has been on quite a bit, as has Sunny Day Real Estate, Prince, System of a Down, Skindred, Leonard Cohen, The Smiths, shit...tons of stuff. I haven't heard anything new that has really moved me though. If anyone has any suggestions based on what I've mentioned, then please let me know. Most of the bands mentioned, I've never even heard of and I feel like I might be missing out on my next big "hard on" based on my current out of the loopness.

Anybody else listened to Antony and the Johnsons with "The Crying Light"? which in all reality is a guy named Antony Hegarty with a band ?

I got hugely captured by that and it caught me out of nowhere, too, since i haven´t heard anything from him before my GF and i listened to a best of album by a german singer named Herbert Grönemeyer where he´s having a duet with Antony.
Anyway, the song (named "will i ever learn) had me intrigued because i thought he had a really great voice.
Well, turns out that this is an understatement. He´s got an unreal good voice. And the album is full of great "universal truths" in the lyrics and that combined with his voice and the very fitting instrumental structure makes it an album that creates an incredible deep atmosphere.
At least that´s what i think ...

No, you're missing one between then and now -- Ringleader of the Tormentors. You're pretty much right on about You Are The Quarry -- those are two of the top 3 or 4 songs on the album, and the rest is pretty good.

What are your thoughts on this one, DC? I've been meaning to pick it up. Source Tags & Codes was phenomenal, and I was in the minority that enjoyed Worlds Apart (esp. Will You Smile Again?) and So Divided.

I loved Source Tags & Codes and I didn't really have a ton of love for So Divided...but so far I'm really enjoying this newest album. It's an evolution and I don't have a real "take" on it or even a favorite song. But I like it.

I came here to post that I've been rocking out to the The Airborne Toxic Event and the song "Sometime Around Midnight" It's not really indicative of their sound, their lead singer sounds totally different on every track, so it's hard to peg them, but this is a pretty great rock and roll song.

I would like to add to those who've already mentioned it and heap additional praise on Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion.

I certifiably hated this band 6 years ago after hearing their first two albums, so if anyone else felt the same way, I encourage you to give them a second chance.

It's an album that really gets better on repeated listenings.

Ducktails
http://www.myspace.com/ducktailss

Just copying a review because I cant describe them.

For an East Coast band, Ducktails sound pretty sun-drenched and Californian to me. Matt Mondanile is the man behind the nostalgic moniker and he seems to be a part of a new wave of artists digging a peculiar blend of early 90's culture, tropical influenced music, psychedelic guitars, and simplistic 4-track style recording techniques. There appears to be a healthy appreciation for kitsch in Mondanile's song craft and instrumentation, but he somehow is able to remain completely genuine and heartfelt- almost childlike at times. Most of these songs are little instrumental pop gems with sweet hooks that stick in your mind and minimal drum beats that feel oddly danceable. When vocals are present they are obscured in the mix and don't seem to be the main focus. Some of what's going on here is reminiscent of Ariel Pink- willfully lo-fi and confusing at times but always remaining in a pop-centric frame of mind. At times I'm also reminded of the mood of more recent Black Dice recording, only without the abstraction. It's hard to describe, but there's a really enjoyable warm mood about all of this, and it's not quite like anything I've heard before. It's a fun listen and a nice diversion from the dronier side of things. This is scheduled to be released by Tape Tecktoniks soon, but I've got the self released version for now which is the same as far as I know. 9/10 -- Charles Franklin

I can't rave enough about the new Neko Case album Middle Cyclone.

I've been listening to it pretty much exclusively for the last week, and I think it's going to settle in to being widely regarded as her best album yet.

She's labeled generally 'Alternative Country' and I guess it works well enough, she has a lot of country/folk sensibilities but I think approaches it with just more of a rock soul. I dunno, don't take my word, this album is picking up assloads of tremendous reviews.

here's the opening track from the album ("This Tornado Loves You") on youtube:

YouTube - This Tornado Loves You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoJku72_6HE)

(She's also a major player in the band The New Pornographers, who have released at least 2 of the better albums this decade).

edit: I listen to a lot of stuff, and I want to stress that I'm not just saying 'yeah, this is ok.' I'm saying this will easily be one of the best albums released all year, and you really need to hear it. Act now suckas.

The Bird & The Bee - Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future came out in January and it's probably my favorite album of the year. It's got way more of a downtempo feel to it (think Sia & Zero 7) than their last LP, so I like it more. But it's really just absurd pop lyrics that they make work pretty well.

Since this seems like the most appropriate place to bring it up, Neko Case's album managed to debut at #3 this week - only behind the new U2 and Taylor Swift (arguably this countries most popular artist of the last year).

So...it's good to see some degree of commercial success for a genuinely great artist, even if U2 literally sold 10 times as many copies in being #1 (they sold about 500K and she sold in the mid 40k range).

K'Naan is a Somali-turned-Canadian who has a similar style to Mos Def with more African influences for the beats - I guess M.I.A. would be the example there. Lacuna Coil has an album out in a few weeks that I'm looking forward to, as well as Camera Obscura.

But in other news, I listened to Whole Wheat Bread's newest single of their recent album, Hearts of Hoodlums that they put out in January.

It's more polished than their first album. They're still punk, but the melodies are tighter, the songs are better and they just sound like a more complete band. They could very well be headed for "next best thing" status. The only bad thing is, they still sound "insert pop-punk band" here.

Hehe...

Some people watch TV shows, watch copious amounts of sports and all of that. I don't do any of that stuff, really. I don't really play many games, some text sims, but not all of the time.

But the one constant for me is music. And I like to have lots of it and it used to be a lot harder to find the stuff.

So because I work online, that probably makes it easier too.

<Photo 1>Since I have nothing else to do, here's my take on the first 3 months of music this year. I've highlighted the 3 albums I've enjoyed the most, and a bunch of songs that are also great. I've also provided youtube links for your added enjoyment.
<br>

<b>ESSENTIAL ALBUM #1:</b><br><br>Neko Case - <i>Middle Cyclone</i>
I think this is pretty clearly her best album yet. I could honestly talk for hours about this album at this point, and will do so with anyone who engages me. I'll say simply that in my case the spin counts are speaking for themselves, 3 of these songs are now in my Top 40 played all-time in my iTunes. I see no way this isn't my #1 album of 2009.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JhxqUN6bog">"People Got A Lot Of Nerve"</a>

<b>ESSENTIAL ALBUM #2:</b><br><br>Animal Collective -<i> Merriweather Post Pavillion</i>
The quintessential 'needs repeated listens' album. It took me about 5 listens to get on board with the single ('My Girls'), and the rest of the album followed suit. Hated this band 5-6 years ago, but this album is for real.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNE">"My Girls"</a>

<b>INTERESTING ALBUM #1:</b><br><br><i>The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart</i>
I kind of dismissed this on the first two listens, but after playing it again i went back to it a few more times. It's not groundbreaking, but it's good. I don't know that i'll be listening to it in 2030, but it's good enough for 09. Additionally, if you're anything like me, you may be able to guess what this album sounds like based entirely on it's cover art. I hit it with about 90% accuracy.

ct you really got me to give that Neko Case a second listen a few months and it's emerged as my fav LP of the year so far. So kudos for that. I love Middle Cyclone and Magpie to the Morning among others but those are my two favs. Also agree on cover art. You can pass by a lot of good albums by their cover, but the cover art on great albums is usually 9 times out of 10 spot on.

The new Peter Bjorn and John album (Living Thing) has been a surprise favorite. I'd never really listened to any of their stuff, but I'm loving it. Tracks like Living Thing, It Don't Move Me, Nothing To Worry About and Stay This Way are my favs.

The new Silversun Pickups album Swoon isn't bad. It took a second listen through before I decide that it was actually good and worth listening to a lot. Basically, it's Billy Corgan-esque rock that would've fit find the 1990s. But it's accessible and it works okay.

Bone Tired, a track from the new Gomez album (A New Tide) isn't bad, besides that I haven't gotten far with that one yet.

Man, I really don't like this album. And I really liked Writer's Block, their last mainstream release.

Just now picked up Fate by Dr. Dog from last summer... man, what an album. They are very "lo-fi" sounding, but the songs are top notch. The first 5 songs on the album especially.

Speaking of lo-fi, the song "Fangela" by Here We Go Magic is one of my favorite songs of the year so far. Right there behind "Brother Sport" from Animal Collective, "The Wanting Comes in Waves / Repaid" by The Decemberists, and "Love Letter to Japan" by The Bird and the Bee.

Also got a listen to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix. Nice, bouncy, polished alt-rock album. I think that's not coming out for another month and a half though.

Have to give Neko Case another listen... I liked the first couple of songs I heard, but haven't given it my full attention yet.

Got to listen to Doves' new album Kingdom of Rust. Very good stuff. "The Outsiders" and "Compulsion" are a couple of standouts.

Peter Bjorn & John's new album, on the other hand... not so good.

I will disagree on "Compulsion" which I just feel is so out there for a doves song (much like "Highly Suspcious" by My Morning Jacket). In fact, the first half is just awesome, and the doves have always been somewhat experimental (the balls to start off Lost Souls with an instrumental). But "Compulsion" as some critics point out does sound much in the same vein as "Rapture" by Blondie.

That being said, "The Outsiders" is a good rocking song (though I'd agrue the point that it's harder in rocking than "Pounding", or "Darker" which I think the guy in popmatters.com alludes too). I really like "Jetstream" which also is a mix of the old doves style of atmospherics, but also pretty electronic-oriented (which is actually very old doves when they were sub-sub). It does seem like a song to fit "Blade Runner" which is what they were going for. "Kingdom of Rust" is heavy on the Western theme in Britian (..."fog coming off the moors") which seems just like some of their better songs of previous albums (the "Man who Told Everything" belongs in a film noir movie). I also like "10.03" with its move from slow (with I think I hear a little slide guitar) to explosion, to resolution, which I think is a great song to their collection.

"Lost Souls" and "Last Broadcast" are still albums I could put on and enjoy, "Lost Souls" which a friend of mine called too dark, does have that darkness but then a song like "Catch the Sun" can so brighten everything up. "Last Broadcast" is also an album which I've never been bored of (but I really enjoy the b-side "Far From Grace" which I think should've been on that album). Their third album had an even weaker 1st half and I just really didn't enjoy it as much.

I've seen a lot of critics compare them to Elbow who apparantly blew up last year with "Seldom Scene Kid" but I like the doves better because they're not pop, nor rock, nor electronic, they mesh it all in atmospherics which make the songs lush with sound, and yes they can be as my friend said "too dark" but the words, music and atmospherics tend to give a better image than any rock song that Elbow has done (I like Elbow but they are a rock band, I can't say that doves are).

Still I like "Kingdom of Rust", it'll be in my rotation for a while, because the doves love to put a lot into their songs, so every listen tends to add something, and that makes for an enjoyable relisten everytime you play it.

The first single "1901" is brilliant for sure. It´s just incredible powerfull, especially considering the instrumentation. It´s like a good Rock Song, just without the guitar sound ;)

@ samifan : I thought the last Album was brilliant. Different, but brilliant. Then again i found "Plans" to be even better. But still, there was a lot to like for me :)
Didn´t know about an EP, will definitely listen to it ASAP now.

I´m at work with no Flash player installed, so no youtube links, but what i´ve listened to a lot recently :

Decemberists - Hazards of Love

not easy to get into and lacking a Hit Song but still a great output. It´s a "concept album", basically telling a great love story. Great female guest vocals !

White Lies - to loose my life

british band. Not exactly original, but very powerfull mix of driving instrumentation and dark lyrics.
Somewhat comparable to the Editors if anyone remembers them.

From Monument to Masses - On little known Frequencies

Great Postrock Band with another great album. A little less melodic than one might think, definitely more Sigur Ros than Explosion in the Sky.

Jack White has formed another band, The Dead Weather, with the female lead singer from The Kills, the bassist from The Raconteurs, and a guitarist from Queens of the Stone Age. As for Mr. White, he's playing drums on the album, which is coming out in June. Being a fan of all these acts, I'm looking forward to it.

You can listen to a couple songs at hxxp://www.thedeadweather.com.

Hollleeeeeee crap. I have not heard of this before, but I'm super excited for it now! When I heard The Kills - Midnight Boom, I liked it a lot and it made me think of The White Stripes and want to listen to them again... So those two together is super awesome!! Agreed ! And the opener Is There a Ghost is just incredibly beautiful.

Right now i am listening to a lot of instrumental stuff from classical music (Bach´s brandenburg concertos especially) to Post Rock. Saw This Will Destroy You live a couple days ago here in Germany. Very small gig, 75 people in a tiny, made the music even more intense than usually.

And i´m listening to the new Mono album Hymn To The Immortal Wind a lot, only released a couple weeks ago and has earned a lot of great reviews. And it´s epic. It´s like Post-Rock meets classical Symphony meets Film scores with a 28 piece orchestra in the background. And the song structures are just incredible.

Here's a song from a Nite Jewel called "What Did He Say?"

I won't bother to review it, I'll copy what a blog said about it:

will be taken aback by the groovy, slow-ish jams of Nite Jewel, the project of LA's Ramona Gonzalez and Emily Jane. A few singles have been floating around for a while, but now they're debut full-length, Good Evening, is finally out. The album is packed full of bedroom disco tracks that sound like they were recorded on a 4-track. Fairly mellow structures and stripped down drum machines back Gonzalez's airy, sweeping vocals. You won't be breaking out in the Hustle on the dance floor or anything, but you will surely be slowly bobbing your head from side to side.

Here's the track: <a href="http://hypem.com/track/778439">Nite Jewel - What Did He Say</a>

My two favorite tracks are the title track

@ lathum : had it borrowed and i truly can´t say much positive about it. Yeah, some songs aren´t bad but overall it´s just boring. And i loved their american idiot album and a lot of their other stuff as well. But this one just feels "forced", like they sat down and said to themselves "you know, i think we should continue just ranting about sth and pretend like we are really angry" . I don´t buy their message on this album, not even a little. And musically it´s straight forward and has some good moments but overall it really is average in that regard as well.
It´s like a very "light" version of american idiot and basically an unnescessary album.
IMO ;)

anyone of you heard of or listened to Bat For Lashes ? She (Natasha Khan, basically a singer/songwriter with a live band and on the album some help from drum magicians yeasayer )was on Letterman recently i saw on youtube.
Her single "Daniel" got mentioned before, but the whole album (Two Suns) is just great. Great voice like Bjork without the "artiness" (that "going over the top and refusing to just sing beautifull" thing she does) but much catchier melodies without being cheesy or dull. There´s some great drum and bass work in it, great lyrics as well.

here the Bjork comparisons get really valid.

Plus, the cover of the single totally kicks ass :

The reviews are lifted directly from the corresponding blog post. Hence the length.

Bat For Lashes - Two Suns
I didn’t really spend a lot of time with her debut album, but it seems that Two Suns veers in a completely different direction. To me, it just sounds like a Tori Amos album with better production. I find it a lot more listenable, as a result. No standout singles to mention yet, but I think it’ll hold up pretty well.

Malajube - Labyrinthes
These guys hail from Quebec. They rock entirely in French and I like them, because they’re pretty solid. One of the problems I had on the first album, is they play almost so loud that it can be very hard to hear the lead singer. That hasn’t really improved on the second album, either. But the melodies are tight and variates well from start to finish. My favorite track on the album is probably the lead track, Ursuline.

Zee Avi
An YouTube sensation, Zee Avi parlayed her online success into a record deal. (http://www.fuelfriendsblog.com/2009/05/16/interview-the-refreshing-zee-avi/) (There’s an article about her that’ll give you more context)

Her eponymous debut was released today. And it’ll put you in mind of a minimalist version of Norah Jones and I mean that in the most flattering way possible. Her music is just really clean, not overproduced in any way and stripped down to the elements and it’s melodic and almost effortless in how great how voice resonates.

It’s worth a listen, for sure. Here’s a cover of Interpol’s Slow Hands that she did (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ob1jdUqiZc), which shows you how good (and distinct, despite my earlier comparison) her music is.

Chrisette Michele - Epiphany

Her first album didn’t hold up for me, but I like her voice a lot and she stepped up her game on this release. Another One would work really well if someone reworked it as a country song. Blame It On Me works, too. What You Do is a Ne-Yo song, so it’s inevitably the best song on the album. Epiphany is the right mix of chill and stuff you can play as the sun sets and I credit that to Chrisette Michele’s voice. It’s not full of distracting cameos and it’s not overproduced. She did a great job on Letterman a few weeks ago, too. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0IEDL9NxaE)

Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown
I don’t know the last time I reviewed a Green Day album. Because I don’t know if I ever have. As a teenager in the 90s, Dookie was memorable for me, but I haven’t really paid much attention to them save for the warranted praise heaped on them for American Idiot, which honestly wasn’t an LP I spent a lot of time with. Not because it was bad, I was just a bit tired of their sound.

Well, 21st Century Breakdown is just really good. It’s got the cohesiveness of a regular album, with the creativity of a concept album. I don’t really have a lot of use for Billy Joe’s voice, yet it’s distinctive and memorable in that way that Darius Rucker will always take us back to Cracked Rear View and when Hold My Hand dominated the airwaves.

The praise heaped on this album isn’t hype. It’s good all the way through and should hold up as one of the best albums of the year, easily.

Corneille - The Birth of Corneilus
He doesn’t really have the Motown pedigree, despite being on the label now. A French-based R&B singer, I’m not sure what to make of him, except he reminds me Tunde Baiyewu from Lighthouse Family (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihf88RwTjBw) and so, maybe that’s why I’m still trying to figure out whether I like the album or not. I don’t think it’ll really resonate in the US, but it’s worth checking out to see what you think. It could be a decent easy listening alternative to other fare.

It does not, however, sound like his last album, with the standout track “Too Much of Everything (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y9vLeYlbLc)” and I can’t figure out if I like it or not. I think the hook is too repetitive.

I haven’t listened to the new Tori Amos (Abnormally Attracted To Sin) in depth yet and I didn't like the new Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band album (Outer South) much at all.

--------------------------------
I also just loaded The Dears latest album (Missiles) and the debut releases from some bands playing at Sasquatch festival soon: Other Lives (Other Lives), School of Seven Bells (Alpinisms) and Vince Mira (Cash Cabin Sessions)

The latter of those three, Vince Mira, is a country singer from California who recorded at Johnny Cash's studio and his album was produced by the Man In Black's son.

I think that about covers it for now.

Just pimping my friends band. They have their full length coming out at the end of summer and they're plaing bonaroo this year. They're called "hockey" just google hockey band and they pop right up. They're a little cut copy or MGMT if Julian casablancas fronted them.

The only 09 albums I've got recently are tiny animals, passion pit and great lake swimmers, since they were on sale. If the thermals ever go on sale, that's my next likely purchase

Indie music fans, Amie Street has 50% off all music through the end of the day. They also offer credits (gift cards) that are also 50% off.

Also, the new Au Revoir Simone album comes with their 3 prior albums free, and it's 50% off. So you get 4 albums for $4.

It's brilliant stuff. There is some real gems on this album. It doesn't hit you at first as much as "American Idiot" does (especially with that album's "Jesus of Suburbia" epic), but I just find myself unable to tear myself away from "21st Century Breakdown". It's quite good and Green Day seems to be trying a few new tricks. I think the trio in a row of "Horseshows & Handgrenads", "The Static Age", and "21 Guns" is some of their best work ever.

I've been listening to Death From Above 1979... I heard a song in a Diesel store in Vegas that I really liked the sound of, so I asked the people working there what it was. After I got home I tried their other stuff (really only one album??), and like it quite a bit... is there any story to this band? Or something else that sounds like them?

edit: Saw their website... guess they've been done for three years. :p Looked at their list of concerts performed, and they were in my city three times, the last being in 2005 with Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age! Oh man if that was right now I'd buy those tickets so fast. Boo.

Blah, you had me excited for a while there. I'm not sure who else I would say sounds like them. I want to say The Klaxons, but that could be just because I got albums by both of them around the same time. Css has a song called "Let's Make Love and Death From Above" which is a reference to them, so it's at least an influence there.

Godheadsilo was doing the bass/drum thing in the early '90s, but they have a lot less-polished sound than DFA. Big Business is also perhaps a more apt and modern comparison.

I figured I'd just put this bit of news in this thread since it seems to catch some of the folks more into the music scene (and it didn't seem worth its own thread here).

An Athens music scene landmark was heavily damaged & likely destroyed by an early morning fire, as The Georgia Theatre went up in flames between 6 & 7 am. Originally the first YMCA in the south built in the late 1890's & later a movie theatre, the building was turned into a music venue in the late 70's and has played host to countless acts large & small including REM, B-52s, Widespread Panic, Pylon, B.B. King, The Police, Ice-T, Muddy Waters, Jerry Jeff Walker, Sea Level, Steve Morris, Chuck Leavell, Randall Bramblett, David Allen Coe, Davis Causey, John Prine. Basically it was the preferred venue in town for any non-country touring act that came through for the past 20 years and was a fixture for acts trying to get their break as well.

I have to say, I'm really enjoying the new Grizzly Bear. Its odd, because I really did not like Yellow House in the slightest. It sounds like there is music this time and not just sound.

Great Lake Swimmers was just meh for me.

I'm kind of enjoying Other Girls - Perfect Cities. Its like if Band of Horses played Strokes music. It works well, but the lyrics are just too bland and misplaced, and while the music sounds good, it a bit too jittery and not skilled enough. If the band takes their time (they talk about this being the last chance they take), they could grow into a pretty good band.

Also not really digging the new "Beirut" album. The Passion Pit album, kind of sounds like a poor man's Cut Copy, which has turned into one of my favorite albums from 2008.

Howling Bells - Radio Wars, I'm liking it more than I thought I would, although the singer sounds a bit too much like Jenny Lewis, who I saw in Chicago two weeks ago (so hot).

I really like Japandroids - Post Nothing, its scuzzy and lo-fi like early At the Drive-In. Also liking Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There are Mountains.

Art Brut - Art Brut vs. Satan - Definitely a return to form after the so-so last album. but The Thermals - Now We Can See, definitely feels like a step down from their brilliant last album.

Finally, it came out last year, but Johnny Foreigner's new album is fun as hell. Its like if the singer from Bloc Party (who's name I won't spell), did punkier music, but then spliced it with a little Los Campesinos.

New Alice In Chains album will be coming out at the end of September, and they are offering the new single for free at their website. They've replaced Layne with Will from Comes With the Fall, and he's great. But AiC has always been about Jerry Cantrell first and foremost, and his voice was an integral part of the old AiC sound, so not having Layne isn't as big an issue as it miht seem (IMO).

The first single, A Looking In View, is heavy as fuck. Very impressed. They were always my favorite grunge band. Probably because they have so much in common with King's X. And I've "known" Will for years - at least a decade ago I started corresponding with him when he was with his old band and a nobody. Now he's in a great place. I have high hopes for this album.

Was thinking I had no idea who that guitarist was, but if they had Joe Satriani that would be pretty amazing. Oh, that is who the guitarist is. I liked the vast majority of the samples. Nothing amazing, but maybe only one real filler level song. If I wasn't so past hard rock music as a genre, I would probably make this an instant buy.

Still waiting for some releases to come out, but the end of the online viral campaign by Derek Webb led to people being able to literally piece together small sound files to hear the song that got him in hot water with his label. He is a "Christian artist" so they weren't too happy with him swearing on it. Really like the song, and it's been stuck in my head since I've heard it. Probably the first song that really stuck with me from the songs that have been posted so far. Probably ends up being one of this hallmark songs like "Wedding Dress."

sweet-voiced indie pop group from California with very smooth melodies and great use of the 2 voices.
saw them in germany playing at a small festival with a mostly Hip Hop lineup (and audience) , they made a ton of fans there. And while them being female twins (with varying rest of the lineup) obviously helped at that, it wasn´t the biggest reason ;)
Kind of like Tegan & Sara but more soft-spoken musically and a bit less direct lyrics .

I finally got around to watching this -- I like this version a lot more than the album version.

Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm a Machine

Honestly, DFA is one of my favourite albums ever right now. I can't stop listening to it. I'll need to leave it along for awhile and then go back to it to see if I still like it as much. !

When I first got this album, I loved it. Nobody I played it for (and I mean nobody) ever liked it. I was stunned. I was like "How can you deny this? It's fantastic!" I still, to this day, listen to it on occasion, but these days I have to be in the mood for it, and it has to be loud.

Got a favorite song off of it? I'll either go with Black History Month or Blood On Our Hands.

If you like them, the next step may be the Blood Brothers. They can be a little tough to get into, but maybe try the song "Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck". Be forewarned! One of the two singers has what you could call a "grating voice", and that's putting it very mildly. Cheers.

It's been a few months since I bumped this thread.

Let's see.

Here are the albums I'm currently sampling:

The xx – Xx (As good as advertised.)
Paramore – Brand New Eyes (The track "Ignorance" rocks.)
The Avett Brothers – I And Love And You (People are raving about it. I haven't heard it yet...but they're pretty good anyway)
Brand New – Daisy (Meh. Nothing really compared to Deja Ent
Ghostface Killah – Ghostdini Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City (Good stuff.)
Foreign Born – Person to Person (What I've heard, I like.)
The Features – Some Kind of Salvation (I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet.)
Harlem Shakes – Technicolor Health (I already don't like it.)
Wye Oak - The Knot (Awesome.)
Zero 7 – Yeah Ghost (Haven't heard it in detail, but no SiA means it probably won't be as good as it could..)
Ha Ha Tonka – Novel Sounds of the Noveau South (Worth checking out)
The Horrors – Primary Colours
jj – No. 2 (It's good.)
Karen O & The Kids - Where The Wild Things Are Soundtrack (If the movie is half this good, it'll be a masterpiece.)

Wye Oak - The Knot This LP is great. I liked them okay on their debut, but this album is really a huge sophomore step forward. Here's a sample track
called "Take It In"

This LP came out last year, but I heard the song this year and really dig it.

Jay-Z released The Blueprint 3. It's...commercial to be sure. But it's not bad and he really mixes it up while still rhyming. I like So Ambitious with Pharrel

<div style="width:300px;"><object width="300" height="110"><param name="movie" value="http://media.imeem.com/m/x7ERAW-cOR/aus=false/"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://media.imeem.com/m/x7ERAW-cOR/aus=false/" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="300" height="110" wmode="transparent"></embed></object><div style="background-color:#E6E6E6;padding:1px;"><div style="float:left;padding:4px 4px 0 0;"><a href="http://www.imeem.com/"><img src="http://www.imeem.com/embedsearch/E6E6E6/" border="0" /></a></div><form method="post" action="http://www.imeem.com/embedsearch/" style="margin:0;padding:0;"><input type="text" name="EmbedSearchBox" /><input type="submit" value="Search" style="font-size:12px;" /><div style="padding-top:3px;"><a href="http://www.imeem.com/ads/banneradclick.ashx?ep=0&ek=x7ERAW-cOR" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://www.imeem.com/ads/bannerad/152/10/" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.imeem.com/ads/banneradclick.ashx?ep=1&ek=x7ERAW-cOR" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://www.imeem.com/ads/bannerad/153/10/" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.imeem.com/ads/banneradclick.ashx?ep=2&ek=x7ERAW-cOR" rel="nofollow"><img src="http://www.imeem.com/ads/bannerad/154/10/" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.imeem.com/ads/banneradclick.ashx?ep=3&ek=x7ERAW-cOR" rel="nofollow" ><img src="http://www.imeem.com/ads/bannerad/155/10/x7ERAW-cOR/" border="0" /></a></div></form></div></div><br/><a href="http://www.imeem.com/artists/jay-z/music/uo-0OYua/jay-z-so-ambitious-jay-z-pharrell-amended-album-version/">So Ambitious [Jay-Z + Pharrell] (Amended Album Version) - Jay-Z</a>

Other than this, D.O.A. is great and On To The Next One (Swizz Beatz produced it) is pretty cool because that's just not a typical beat for him to rhyme on.

Ghostface Killah released a new album ("Ghostdini Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City") and as usual, he mixes and matches, but the best tracks are the ones with R&B artists. Paragraphs of Love (feat. Estelle and Vaughn Anthony) is really good.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but lala.com may be the best way to sample albums I the US. Basically, signing up for an account let's you listen to nay song 1 time for free. I pretty much use it each week to play all the new albums I think I might be interested in. It's saved me plenty of money over the past 6 months.

Music I've purchased if late:
the Drums - I rally enjoy this album. It's lite and summer-y.
Washed out- it's ok, a little too electronic for my taste.
Girls - also enjoy this, when I didn't think I would particularly like it.
Arctic Monkeys - really, really dislike it, which is sad. Diminishing returns.
Needtobreathe - Meh. Its a band I went to college with. Their debut was actually pretty good and had a lot of different sounds. Now they've settled into Christian rock.
The phenomenal handclap band- hate it.

Freebie from Longhorn Steaks showed up in my email today. Limited to the first 5,000 registrations at
Luke Bryan - Album Download (http://www.lukebryan.com/longhorn)

Free .mp3 downloads of the new album from rising country star Luke Bryan (although you do have to confirm the d'load track by track as each one finishes)

Probably not the cup of tea of too many people here but free is free (while it lasts anyway) so I figured I'd throw it out there just in case somebody might like it.

OK, I so rarely buy new albums these days, but two of my favourite groups have released stuff pretty recently.

Flaming Lips - Embryonic
This is a big change of direction for the Lips. Some of the tracks (The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine & See The Leaves in particular) are just plain menacing at times, something you really haven't been able to say about a Lips song in... well, a long, long time. At first I was a little dissapointed in this album because it lacks much of melodic "pop" stuff that the Lips are so good at, but repeated listens have revealed more layers to each song. There are a few lighter tracks (Evil & I Can Be A Frog in particular), but even in these the lyrics are darker than usual for the Lips. There is very little of the intentionally naive wide-eyed idealist lyrics found on the last couple of albums.

Air - Love 2
I still really need to give this one a few more spins. Air have quickly become a "pleasant background music" group rather than song writers, and while they can be fairly good at creating moods, they are skating a very thin line between "moody" and "plain boring" on Love 2. I've only sat through it a few times though, so maybe it'll grow on me, though Pocket Symphony never really did.

Walking on a Wire: Richard Thompson Box Set

Want to hear probably the best unknown guitarist ever?

Started out playing folk music with Fairport Convention, session man for Nick Drake, moved onward to experimental solo career that faltered, met a lovely lady (Linda Thompson), started recording dark gritty folk/rock/British albums ("I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight"), converted to Sufi Islam, recorded possibly the best break-up/divorce album ever ("Shoot Out the Lights"), toiled in relative obscurity but his live shows are to die for, even recorded soundtrack work (latest was the stirring guitar work in the documentary "Grizzly Man")...you will listen to any of his albums and probably not recognize anything, but yet it'll sound amazing, like hearing something special for the first time (and yet the guy has been around for decades).

This is the perfect intro to his work, 4 CDs encapsulate a great bulk of his work, highly recommended.

I've been meaning to post about The xx. I've been listening to this for a few weeks now, almost a Low sound to it.

Could be my favorite disc of the year.

The new album from Noah and the Whale is very good although it's taken some time to grow on me. I compare it to the last National album in depth and the way the singers use their voices.

Vcr is my favorite song on that album.

Mine too. I'm putting together a top 40 songs of the decade list for a music club I'm in and think it's going to make it (trying to have each year represented at least once).

Them Crooked Vultures' first album is coming out next week, but is streaming on their website now at http://themcrookedvultures.com . For those of you that don't know who they are, its Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age on guitar and lead singer, Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters / Nirvana on drums and backup vocals, and John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin on bass. If you don't like Queens of the Stone Age, you probably won't love this, but I think its awesome.
