She goes to set religion and my wife see's "Amish" in there - errr, exactly how many Amish people use computers?

*chuckles* I learned that from the Amish community that I grew up 4 miles from. I kinda miss going to the grocery store and seeing the horse drawn carriages every other Tuesday lined up in the grass outside the parking lot.

They're good people. I always hated seeing them demeaned by the local people and kids.

Amish markets/stores are the best. Cheap prices and stuff you won't find anywhere else.

I lived near an Amish community for a few years as well. They are good neighbors.

dola: Well, unless you live next door. They can ride in someone else's car for medical needs, and they can watch someone else's television as long as they are in their home. I knew several people who lived next door to Amish families that sort of got annoyed by them "visiting" them almost constantly to watch their tv.

It is certainly possible that some Amish can have computers--within the continuum of groups considered "Amish", there is quite a bit of variation on what are considered acceptable practices. Some groups are more liberal than others when it comes to things like the use of electricity, driving cars, etc.

One of my wife's cousins married into a family in one of these more liberal Amish sects. We were tickled to see (and had to get) an electric fryer on their wedding registry. That cousin does have an e-mail account and does e-mail my wife every now and then...

Near where I grew up was something like the largest contingent of Amish in the country (I grew up in Harrisburg, PA). One of the communities got national attention two years ago, when a schoolhouse was attacked and several girls were killed. To deflect attention from the media, some of them were faking cell phone calls, so that they didn't have to talk to the reporters. Supposedly, they have cars, but don't drive them. They have people move them around for them.

Also, about ten years ago, two young Amish men were caught with about $200,000 in cocaine, as part of a sting. I've always found that to be astounding.
