The Colts have called a 5 p.m. press conference this afternoon to discuss the future of head coach Tony Dungy. Word has reportedly leaked out of Indianapolis that Dungy will indeed retire.

Shame. Dungy was one of the good guys of the sport.

good for him though. getting out now so he can still spend some time with his kids and all, and make a difference in other ways.

I think Dungy is done permanently.

Oof. Curious to see where the Colts go from here. Is Meeks the heir apparent or do they go outside?

I thought Caldwell was sewn up for this.

I wonder how history will judge a guy who had what's likely to be considered the greatest QB of all time for 8 years. And only won one ring

Outside of that I think he will be missed. He was a class act. We need more guys like him in the sport.

Ten straight playoff teams. I don't think history will judge him too harshly.

Yeah, his success across two teams cements him. And he may have had the best QB, but he also was forced into a position where all their money was tied into the QB and his support cast.

Don't think that's quite as ideal as some think.

Dungy's issue will be his 9-10 postseason record, with the one aforementioned ring. He's been a fantastic regular season coach (he turned the Bucs around) but had a hard time getting it done in the playoffs.

I hope he comes back as a GM at some point, his single biggest strength IMO is his ability to see what a player can be and put him in the right position to excel.

Pretty much every time besides the Patriots has had a "hard time getting it done in the playoffs" recently.

He's been knocked for his playoff record, but other than the Pats, he's won just as many Super Bowls as any other coach in his tenure with the Colts.

He did so much for bringing this team to be a yearly contender...so much to bring respect to the organization. He did a lot for the team and the league. He's special and will be greatly missed by Colts fans.

A sad day. Caldwell has huge shoes to fill.

Reche Caldwell?

While he would have an eye for the action, Jim Caldwell is the real successor.

One of my most favorite coaches, in any sports, of all time. Good luck Tony.

Last year when Dungy was considering retirement and Caldwell was a candidate for other jobs, the Colts gave Caldwell a new title (Associate Head Coach) and contract that included language that was would be named head coach whenever Dungy retired. Polian and Irsay made comments last week strongly implying that plan is still in effect.

And after all Reche Caldwell did for them on their Super Bowl run, they just turn their back on him.

The Colts officially named Caldwell their head coach today.
