Poker
For poker, how do we want to work it? We could have four 4-player games, or two eight-player games. However we decide to go, we could just lump them together using this order. So if we go for four groups of 4, the first group would be Marmel, Travis, Butter, and Radii.

Hearts
Ahhh, Hearts. A game that I've never played. Whoever is in my part of the bracket gets an easy win. It's 4-player, right? (Evidence of just how little I know about Hearts). :(

If anyone plays somebody twice in the opening round, let me know, and we can rearrange a little. I'd prefer that everybody plays a new person in the opening round of each game.
We also need to figure out ground rules, like how long a person has to move in Chess and Scrabble. Probably Hearts and Poker need some rules too. Like which Poker games we will play. Just 5-card draw and other basic games, or less common variations (I think that we should stay simple).
If there are issues I haven't brought up, please feel free to present them. I was thinking we could run 1 tournament a week.

For Poker, I think 4 groups of 4 would work.

splits, do you know how to play chess?
SplitPersonality1

yes, played a lot as a kid, but maybe 3 games in the last 20 years.
Kodos

I think that 6th-grade Kodos would seriously kick 32-year old Kodos' ass in chess.
I think it'd be fun to see what people think they will do best in. I suspect Scrabble will prove to be my strongest game. What do you guys think you will do well in?
On the other hand, Hearts will not be pretty for me. :(

If you need a mean hearts player to sub in, just let me know. :D

Well, considering I've played maybe all of 3 games of chess in my life, SkyDog is going to have some easy early points. Course if we switch it to crib I'd be quite happy ;)

okay, well those people I play, please pm me
we should also set a time limit for chess...and you should decide whos white

Top player is white in Chess.
I will do best in the card games.

To those I am matched against, I am going out of town this weekend, leaving today around 5 PM ET, and won't be back until late Sunday night. Hope this won't be a problem. But we can get to my serious beatings next week.
I think chess will probably be my weakest game, as I tried to get my wife to start playing with me, but she didn't understand the rules all that well. And my attempts to start playing at an online site didn't go well. I mopped the floor with my wife in chess, but she didn't even know how pawns captured pieces, so that tells you something right there.
I'll be mediocre in cards, I'm always a weak hearts player, but a decent poker player. Scrabble will probably be high for me, I played my friend every day, several times a day one summer. My wife won't let me play her anymore. :(

Dola
Has it been decided at which website to play these games? Or is that to be worked out with your competition in each game/round?
Marmel
03-27-2003, 08:40 AM
splits, I would be happy to forfeit our game of chess to you. I have no clue on how to play.
Travis
03-27-2003, 09:35 AM
Suppose I should also mention to those that I play, this weekend is going to be one where I hopefully won't know what's going on until at least 3pm on Sunday. That said, hopefully by about that time I'll be somewhat coherent and able to knock off a few games if any of you are around.

If we were to play on one of those poker sites. we could play for free there, and they have tournaments you can setup. so we could play tournament style, 2 eight man tournaments. It would be much faster playing here, because the blinds double every 8 hands, just like in most real tournaments.
Airhog
03-27-2003, 01:37 PM
dola here, chess, battleship hearts, and scrabble can all be played on yahoo.
Kodos
03-27-2003, 01:41 PM
I will leave it to those who have played on online sites to decide. I have never played any games online, so my input would be worthless.
I say we don't start the tourneys until next week. Also, would we like to go in the order that they are shown above?

Hey - cut me some slack, Jack! People seem to be busy this weekend, so it seemed like a good idea to postpone the start until next week. And I could make an uninformed decision about the game sites, but I foolishly thought it would be better to go with what people who have actually played thought. Ya bastard. ;) Did you notice what being bossy got Roger last night on Survivor? I'm no Roger!

Here you go. We are playing in the order the games appear above!
That felt good. More power trips to follow... :)

I would rather not play poker on yahoo, even though it is possible too, but non tournament game would take some time to play, and just isnt as fun :D

Okay, we'll go with this for Scabble. Is Yahoo okay for the other games, or Pogo.com (I think that is the other one people have mentioned.)

So is next Monday good for folks to start up on the Chess tournament? I think 3 minutes a turn is a reasonable amount of time.

Shorty may have to forfeit for the sake of moving the tourney along.

It looks like I will be taking a forfeit as well. A family thing has come up and I will be heading out of town. Please feel free to start the chess tourney without me (I suck at chess anyhow). Just go by the brackets, and that should be good enough. I'll let you guys worry about when to play and which game site to run things on. Sorry to have to bow out of this round, but sometimes life gets in the way of fun. :(

Okay, another victim of my unexpected weeklong trip out of state and away from computers. If you guys want to give this a try now that I'm back in action, we can give it a go. If you've lost interest, please let me know. Anyhow, please check in if you are still aboard and want to start our chess tournament this week.
Thanks,
Kodos :)

Hey guys. The fact that 6 guys have disappeared before game 1 has been played has discouraged me a bit here. Maybe this is an idea that just isn't going to work because people will inevitably drop out along the way. What do you guys think? I'm beginning to believe that anything that requires active participation from multiple people over any period of time is doomed to fail. :(
Travis

I think the biggest problem will be people's schedule's, but I'll admit that I've been lazy and have yet to contact my opponent's. So bring it on SkyDog, I'm ready to go down hard in chess!
