View Full Version : Should I buy a Cube

I been pondering on whether to buy a Gamecube the last few weeks and I saw that Circuit City is running a deal this week where you can buy the Cube and Metroid (or one of 3 other games) for $130. I already own PS2, but besides sports, no great games seem to be coming out any time soon. Gamecube, meanwhile, has several older budget titles that interest me such Beach Spikers ($10), Smash Brothers ($30), and Eternal Darkness ($20). It also has Zelda for it and Star Fox (which I would borrow from a friend). I think I'm probably going to buy a Gamecube, but I thought I get your guys' opinions first.

Also, what is the status of NCAA Football 2004 and Sega Sports games (such as College Basketball 2K4)? (This would effect whether or not I'd consider selling my PS2)

I love my Gamecube but I'm biased. Also, it sounds a bit crazy at first, but if you have the $30 for a wavebird (the wireless one) controller- get it! It's awesome and you'll wonder how you got along without it. Here's a list of the games I have (only 2 are multiplatform- the others are N exclusives):

Super Smash Bros Melee - Awesome party game and probably the best overall game the cube has come out with. If you have a cube and don't have this, what are you thinking?
Eternal Darkness - Great adventure game that reminds me some of Resident Evil but is still very unique. Draws you in.
Metroid Prime - What can I say that hasn't been said. It's an amazing single player game. I prefer Smash Bros to it, but only because of it's amazing multiplayer
Zelda - Mine is coming but I dont have it yet. It's Zelda- what else needs to be said. The pre-order was awesome: Ocarina of Time and Master Quest.
Mario Sunshine - Great platformer if you can ignore the camera problems. Remember when games were hard? No games have a Zelda 2 last level, TMNT 1 (entire game), SMB3 world 8, or third route of original Star Fox level of difficulty. Try some of the void levels- those aren't quite to that level but they are hard.
Rogue Leader - Nice little sequel and an amazing game for the eye candy and "realism" that feels like you are in the movie
Pikmin - No, not Pokemon! Take Lemmings, make it 3-d pretty and add some variety. Great puzzle game
Timesplitters 2- Obligatory FPS. Single player mode sucks pretty hard but you quickly forget that. This game is all about the multiplayer. Unfortunately not as polished or deep as Perfect Dark but nearly as many options and very, very pretty. Multiplatform, tho.
NFL2K3 - Um.. duh. Also, multiplatform.
Super Monkey Ball 2 - Really addictive puzzle game. You kindof have to play this to fully understand it. Not everyone's cup of tea.
Animal Crossing - Also, not everyone's cup of tea. But if it's yours (and it was mine), it's tremendously addicting and you will play an hour a day on it, at least.

Games I don't have that are worth checking out: Star Fox Adventures (good platformer- not as good as zelda, but what is?), Resident Evil 0 (GameCube exclusive RE prequel- amazing looking), Wave Race (beautiful- playing the demo at Wal Mart made me fall in love with the Cube), and Phantasy Star Online (online; for those of you familiar with the Sega RPG).

I'm tempted to buy the Cube JUST for Zelda. I still think Ocarina of Time is the best video game I've ever played, on any platform.

Zelda and Metroid alone justified my purchase of a GameCube, and Smash Bros and Mario Sunshine were a very nice bonus.

As others have said, Rogue Leader is excellent. I also highly recommend Skies of Arcadia Legends and Rayman 3. If you're a heavy sports gamer, don't buy a 'Cube unless you've also got one of the other two systems, though - there really won't be much other than Disney Sports, Backyard Sports, and some EA titles in the future, with Sega Sports development at a halt on the platform.

Re: Animal Crossing. Don't buy it unless you have people to play it with. Otherwise you'll tire of it quickly, mark my words. Why this game wasn't online boggles the mind.

I will echo everything Sack said, including the part about Animal Crossing... Particuraly now that the price is so low ($130 for a cube AND metroid?! how do you beat that?).. I LOVE my cube and wouldn't trade it straight up for one of the other systems..

If you can get the system and Metroid for $130, this is a no-brainer.

Metroid was the best game published last year, regardless of platform, and Zelda looks like it will be competing for that award this year.

I'll chime in and add my shouts of yes to all the others. I honestly haven't played that many games on the Cube, but the ones I have played have been superb. I think the Cube is definitely worth it for Eternal Darkness, Animal Crossing, and so far Zelda alone!

On an aside, I'm ashamed to admit I haven't even played Metroid Prime yet. I was just turned off by the whole First Person thing, I guess I'll give it a shot sometime soon, keep hearing such awesome things about it.

edit: Btw, on the Sega front, there has been rumors flying around that Sega might start pulling some of it's sports line from the Cube, as they had pretty horrible sales for them the last year. These are just rumors though, not sure if there is any truth, it's something to ponder on.

I also love my Cube.
I'm pretty sure Sega won't bring their sprots games to the Cube anymore. I think I read that on IGN somewhere.

If you like sprots games, you HAVE to get a Cube. Have you seen what they will be doing with the Advance connectivity in the next EA Sports games? You can connect your advance to the other controller port, and pick plays, etc.. using the Advance!

How many times have you been playing Madden against a friend, and NOT wanted them to see what "area" of plays you just picked in?

I think with the current games out, and Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Metroid Prime 2, Mario 128, etc... coming on the way... it's already worth the price for sure. Add on the fact that EA is doing this with the Advance, and I think it's a sure thing that if you're looking for a console, get the Cube.

There was also an article on IGN saying that Eidos and EA don't like the XBox Live package... if they don't support XBox Live (which is the bets part of XBox in my opinion), it's a huge blow.

Those are just my opinions!

Now back to class :o

Well I bought the Cube and chose Metroid as my free game. I also preordered Zelda at my local Blockbuster and they expect to have the game in tommorrow. I know it's out, but they are the only place that still had the deal where you could get the N64 zelda if you bought the new Zelda.

It's not so much that EA doesn't like Xbox Live as that they've sunk a ton of money into their EA.com venture, and they'd prefer to use their own servers and billing setup for their games. Microsoft would rather process everything centrally, and EA doesn't want to do that.

Ergo, no EA online games as of yet. Not really sure what the hell Eidos has worth playing online to begin with.

Slight Bump.

I ended up buying a Gamecube last night. Bought it bundled with Mario Sunshine and a memory card for $159.99. Then picked up Metroid as my free game and then bought Zelda on my own.

Yah, I won't be having much free time for a while.

I just think that if you already own a PS2, there's no reason to really buy an X Box. I got the Gamecube because I love Zelda games, as well as wanted to try out Metroid. So far I haven't been dissapointed the least bit.
