I am always unhappy about spam mail, but the barrage of "support the troops buy a t-shirt from me" emails I have been getting have me hot.

Someone like Cam should give these jackoffs a call to find out how buying one of these t-shirts supports our troops.

Fritz,

send me a copy of the email and I'll do it.

We must have made it onto some of the same mailing lists, 'cause I've gotten (and trashed) two of those this week. Not only is it shameless profiteering, but the designs I've seen are just Godawful.

I keep getting a "Do you like hairy European Teens?" email.

Cam, can you take care of that one for me?

My favorites are the "Are you tired of SPAM" e-mails.

If I responded to all of the junk e-mails, I would have refinanced my mortgage approximately 4,718 times this year already. I'd also have plenty of hair, a massive dick, and a substantial jump in my step (Viagra).

I'm keep getting annoying "We know you like them plump. Cum see our MASSIVE Fun Bags." e-mails.

Cam, can you help me out as well? :D

...and a horde of Eastern European 'women' to use it on.

I need to inform Strayer University that I will not consider them, or any eduspammers, for my future education. IMHO using spam mail erases all credibility.

Coug,

Thanks a lot. I wasn't expecting anything quite that funny in this thread and so I let out one of those pig snort laughs at work. Everyone is looking at me funny now. Jerk.

What I can't believe is that enough people reply to spam to make sending it worthwhile.

Can someone more e-mail literate than me explain the new rash of spam from domain names like "xkdlufopcx.com" or "ykhgjhsxt.com". Are these real, or is there a way of hiding your true domain name?

On a related note, at my home e-mail address through earthlink.net I started recieving literally thousands of cannot deliver bounce-back messages for spam mail I didn't send - I take it spammers can hijack legitimate e-mail addresses to make it look like their spam came from someone else?

These are things that bug the hell out of me about e-mail - there should be absolutely no way for deception to occur with e-mail - the exact addresses for mail shouldn't be hidden.

I've gotten to the point where I pretty much filter out any e-mail that comes from a yahoo, juno or lycos domain with all the junk-mail I get. I'd eliminate msn and aol except I know a lot of people that use them.

dawg, most mail software nowadays can filter out addresses and key words but they are getting more clever in not using words like penis, as well as preventing unsubscriptions and blocks.

Also, they tend to use spellings like c*m, p@nis, et cetera.

I get about 100 spams a week because of this. It's a real pain in the a$$.

The spam I'm really getting tired of seeing is the breast enlargement one, being as that I'm male and all. Scratch that, it ticks me off when I get both breast and penis enlargement spam on the same day. BE CONSISTENT!

Maybe they want you to push breast enlargement on your girl. Then, once she's stacked, you're gonna need to be hung to keep her.

Yeah, my software uses these filters. But the B.S. domain names make the domain filtering virtually worthless - what good is filtering out lzclxjfld.com when the next batch comes from kdlkdjfsx.com? Where do these domains come from, if they actually exist at all? I have a feeling they don't exist, but rather the spammers are somehow able to hide the true domain they spam from.

Most free e-mail programs are now taking steps to make it almost impossible for programs to auto-register e-mail addresses, forcing spammers to create accounts themselves, so that's a step in the right direction.

Still, I just can't believe that spam is actually worth the time that is involved in sending it? Haven't all the old and gullible that are ripe to be plundered either been victimized already or caught-on to these schemes?

I suspect the real money is in people selling e-mail addresses to spammers.

Can anyone literate in e-mail or TCP/IP etc. protocol tell me how and why true addresses and domains can be disguised or legitate addresses hijacked?

the problem with spam mail is the outdated SMTP protocol. The protocol will surely undergo a change in next 5 years. The reason it needs to be changed will be around as long as mankind.

I get emails all the time from colleges! That's where most of my spam comes from, that and porn sites.

This is quick and dirty...but hopefully it will help a little...

The how of the operation is very, very simple. Essentially, an SMTP server (like sendmail, for instance) depends on the message header for the source information on any email that you send. So, if you wanted to send an email to someone from say, [email protected], you could simply TELNET into an SMTP server and specify the MAIL FROM: tag to be whatever you wish. As long as you are an authenticated user (or if the server is set to be an open relay, very unlikely if the admin is paying attention), then the SMTP server won't bother with whether or not the FROM address is a valid domain. It doesn't care (in most cases). The FROM header is there simply to give the receiving user an address to which they can respond.

Even if the FROM header is garbage, an admin can usually discover the IP address of the offending server and block mail coming from that address (or at the minimum, complain to the administrators that their servers are being used for spam relay). Of course, with IP spoofing, even that technique has holes that can be exploited.

NOTE: You can configure an SMTP server to do a reverse lookup to ensure that the domain address you are claiming to be in the FROM header can be verified by a DNS query. If you are setting up a spam relay, however, why would you want to do something like that?

Penis enlargement? Let me know if you get any emails about penis reduction, I'm getting tired of all the scapes and scratches from the sidewalk.

Okay, now back to the real world. :D
