View Full Version : Prayers/Karma/Good thoughts request?

My mother is going in for surgery tommorrow, and will be in the hospital at least overnight, and possibly in the hospital for four days.

The issue is that she is a lung cancer survivor for over a decade now, and in "remission" to the point where the cancer is shrunk to the point it's not doing anything in years but still there, only the chemo was doing more to her then to the cancer.(and she's had monthly checkups to confirm that the cancer isn't growing and/or is stable)

They noticed a spot on her skull (not her brain, her skull), in x-rays, and they're not quite sure what it is. They're pretty sure it's NOT the cancer spreading, but they can't be sure without doing this surgery. The surgery will involve the section of her skull with the spot being removed, and a titanium plate being put in. I guess it's minor surgery as far as this goes, but my first instinct to say is "Is any surgery where you take out part of a skull minor?".

I actually took two days off from work Mon/Tue to spend with my folks, and going back into work tommorrow in a (probably vain) attempt to keep myself from being in a worry mood all day.

Any prayers/karma/good thoughts deeply appreciated.

Thanks.

Good luck Foz.

My Mother in LAw is in early stage heart transplant recovery and I know what a helpless feeling it is watching someone you love have to suffer.

She'll be in our prayers

That still sounds like a heavy procedure, eventhough the surgeries know what they're doing. Good luck to your mother!

One more update before work:

They removed a piece of her skull about the size of a quarter. They did get the piece in question, but since they need to soften the bone to get a biopsy of it, we won't know for 10 days if it IS cancer or what have you.

Good luck with not getting too nervous while you are waiting.

Right now, I'm just glad she's home and sleeping comfortably :)

The worry will set in soon, I'm sure.

Damnit, large step back. I think they let her out too early, she fell in the bathroom and may have hit her head.. she wasn't too coherent, I think it was a post-op infection she complained about being cold, but was hot to the touch..

Doctor said to call the ambulance.

They took her to the local hospital to stabilize her, and are sending her back to the main hospital once she's stable.

Needless to say, right now, I'm all wound up...

Just need to calm down, I have a bag of her stuff (clothes and the like) to take up to Boston when they send her up here.

sorry to hear Foz.

If it is any consolation there are always complications in something so major. My MIL was doing great after her recent heart transplant but is now struggling through complications.

I'll be praying for her.

Update: My mom is being transferred to the big Boston hospital. She was running about a 102 degree fever, and is resting comfortably after being given some more antibiotics.

yeah. My dad dropped in, he tolled me to get some sleep (I had napped for 20 minutes or so), and I'll head up to Boston in the morning

Good to hear she's stable Foz. I does irk me to hear that yet another patient gets released to early after a major surgery like this. This could have been totally preventable....

Update after catching about 3 1/2 hours of sleep.

They've stabilized her. They're trying to get her a room at Brigham and Women's hospital, but she's sleeping.

I've been told to stay here and be the point of contact for the rest of the family. Needless to say, I'd rather be up with her.. :)

Thanks. Update

I talked to her this morning, and while she's still not feeling particularly great, she is coherent and we talked for the first time since the surgery. I was planing on visiiting her today before work, but between mom-stress and work-stress and some kind of bug, right now, I'VE come down with something, so I'm going to shuffle back to bed and try to feel better for tonight's work shift

(before anyone asks, I have to do these shifts, as there's no one to cover me at all at such notice and I made a promise when I got given these shifts I would work them al if humanly possible)

Take some vitamin pills. Keep up your strength so you can continue to worry. ;)

Seriously though, glad it's not all bad news and you do need to keep your strength up, so do what you need to do. Hang in there.
