Thing is... the deceased put her head through a windshield last weekend and walked away in a drunk driving accident. Yet she got in the car with another drunk driver this weekend and is dead now.
The driver is the brother of a good friend and bowling teammate. He'll be in the hospital for a week and head off to prison.

Wow, as someone who has regrettably done some drunk driving in the past, this is an eye opener.

And I hear another involved may not make it....
I do fear this will not change anybody's habits around here. No taxi services available in our town. We had a safe ride program that died due to cheap fuckers not paying the kind lady that ran the service. I'd pay her a minimum of $20 per ride home. A lot cheaper than a DUI, or even worse, something like this.
If anything good can come from this I hope it is a revived Safe Ride program which MADD is fighting tooth and nail choosing to promote an asinine policy that borders on advocating prohibition.

this post is kind of funny in that it comes from a poster whose occupation is "criminal".

I grew up in a very small town who graduating classes were around 40+ to 60. We had a similar situation where like 10 people died within 3 years. The ages were from 10 to early 20s. A number of them where from drunk driving. The most known one being seniors getting killed within weeks of graduation. It hit our town very hard. We even had minor accidents that were in addition to everything else so it just became expected that something bad was going to happen. I remember all of the MADD/SADD type demonstrations we had and how kids still widely drove drunk. My own brother completely wrecked his Ford Mustang GT 5.0 in his 20s. People get the attitude that it won't happen to them until something like this happens and it suddenly hits home. Eventually it gets forgotten enough to where it will happen again. I know my parents were talking about a rash of deaths when they were growing up as well.
And really, I have zero clue what was going through your friend's head that lead them to getting into that car. I'm not mentally normal driving a car for at least a week even after something simple like a fender bender. I put my head through a car window because of an alcoholic induced accident and a week later somebody who has been drinking wants to drive me home. I freaking walk home if I have to.

seriously. not to speak ill of the dead, but it seems like there was a serious lack of judgment there

Horrible lack of judgment all around and now the family has to suffer, especially her young daughter.

So the brother of your friend struck another vehicle/person or was the other involved who may not make it in the vehicle as well?
It's a shame that people are selfish and stupid.

That's terrible.
The worst story I know of personally was a guy in my HS graduating class. After attending a party at college he got drunk and decided it wasn't safe for him to drive home, so he started walking home instead. He got partway home when a car full of his friends stopped and offered to give him a ride. The car was already crowded so there wasn't a seat belt available, and the driver was drunk. They crashed shortly thereafter, he took a flier through the windshield and has been paralyzed from the neck down ever since.

Sorry to hear about this lungs. Very sad.
Seat belts?? Not sure if it would have mattered much, but, if you get your head thrown through a windshield, I am led to believe there was no seat belt being used and then have the lack of common sense to get into another car with a drunk after going through that...just...wow.
Wear your damn seat belts people.

Very sorry to hear this news Lungs, especially in the middle of dealing with the legal issues still from my Wifes arrest in December.
As trying as our ordeal has been, stories like this give me pause to be truly grateful that no innocent people or my Wife were hurt when she made this same horrible decision.
Thoughts and prayers to the families involved.

Hopefully the silver lining in this is that someone will read about what happened and think twice the next time they want to drive after having too many drinks.
I am really sorry for your loss.

I'm really sorry for your loss as well, lungs. I was very aware of this thread yesterday when my wife and I went to a wine tasting. I actually skipped a few of the wines so that I would be sure not to be tipsy when it was time for me to get behind the wheel.
