View Full Version : 2009 NCAA Top Gun Game B DRAFT THREAD
Radii
03-13-2009, 03:38 PM
Game Rules
1) Each participant drafts a team of 6 players.
2) Snake draft done on the forum.
3) You score as many points as each of your drafted players scores in the NCAA tournament.
4) One of your players must be from a team seeded 10th or lower.
Draft Rules:
There is a 1 hour clock that will run from 9am to 5pm eastern time Monday through Wednesday of next week. Drafting may begin immediately after the selection show ends. If a person has not sent a draft list and is unable to pick when the clock is running, I will auto-draft the top scorer who is on a team in the NCAA tournament.
If the draft is moving too slowly I reserve the right to extend the clock later in the week (ie have it from from 10am-7pm if necessary to guarantee we finish).
Note that the clock is only running 8 hours a day for 3 days. That's just 24 picks if everyone slacks off. We need to get through 72 picks, so this *really* depends on people paying attention to the forum and sending in lists.

I am so ACC-Centric that years when i don't have a lot of confidence in the ACC teams I find myself fairly out of touch. that has changed some this year, what with me working only part time and hanging around the house so much to help out my family, I have watched more non-ACC games this year than I have in a decade, but its still not a huge amount.
I'm not sure what to do this year given that... I have zero faith in Wake or Clemson, and I won't ever have a Duke player on my squad. We'll see.

If I had any advice, the two teams I'd go for are *******a and ******a. That would mean little even without the asterisks, but I'm trying to win this damn Top Gun for once.

By the way Radii....if Cuse can somehow get by ASU and then Blake Griffin, Boeheim is going to make Cry-baby Roy his bitch again just like in the '03 championship game. Flynn is every bit the PG as Lawson, we are about the only team who would love to get in a track meet with UNC, but the difference is we play defense once in a while, and Devo or Rautins will go all Gerry Mac on you guys. ;)

I just did my player rankings for this draft. I took about 120 players and came up with a projected score for each one.
What I did was inputed their scoring average, the maximum amount of games I could see them playing in the tournament and the minimum amount of games I could see them playing. I then took the average between the two and those are my base rankings. Doubt I'll stick to them exactly, but since I don't know a lot of players real well, I wanted a base to work from.

I was happy as hell to get the one scorer from Marquette in the 4th friggin round. I couldn't believe he was still available.
They have 3 pretty good scorers. McNeal is the best (at 20), but Matthews averaged over 18 points a game, Haywood 16. I presume that most people were avoiding Marquette since they have 1-5 since losing James.
Those 5 losses were all to top 15 teams. Two could have gone either way (and I mean coin flip either way, losing at the buzzer and in OT). Since they were roughly 50/50 in games against 3 seeds Villanova and Syracuse, I would think they'd be 50/50 against 3 seed Missouri. They might get 3 games.

As popular an upset pick as VCU is I'm surprised Maynor lasted til the 6th round.
I thought about him, but SO many people are picking UCLA to get upset I think they are gonna come in with a chip on their shouler.
FWIW UCLA is a 7 point favorite and Arizona is a 1 point favorite. I'll put my trust in Vegas

The other thing that turned me off a bit on VCU after looking at them is that other than Maynor they are a fairly young team. Usually when you see the upsets, the team seems to be fairly veteran. I had a similar reaction to Butler this year, they are really young for the most part.

Yeah. FWIW, I don't think VCU will get the upset either. If Maynor turns in to Curry, maybe.

Bah, I almost took him in the 5th, as I thought he was THE 10+ seed guy to have. I think USC is the most likely 10 seed to play more than two games.
For that reason, I will take Taj Gibson of USC.

No need for a clock really for 3 picks, but, Neuqua you can pick any time. Karl and DC both need 10+ seed players, presumably you'll be taking a player no one else is eligible to take.

A little iffy for the second round, where he was originally taken.

To make it even more confusing, we were actually in the 3rd round when Butler was selected as a make-up pick.

Earl Clark, Louisville
Samardo Samuels, Louisville
AJ Price, UConn
Andy Rautins, Syracuse
Deon Thompson, North Carolina
Orlando Mendez-Valdez, Western Kentucky
If Louisville lives up to expectations, and UConn makes it at least to the final 8, and Cuse/UNC meet in the Elite 8, I could have a nice consistant scoring squad here. Maybe not first place material but I'd like to think I'll still be alive Final 4 weekend. :)

My roster is
Wayne Ellington, North Carolina
Kyle Singler, Duke
James Harden, Arizona State
Robert Dozier, Memphis
Isiah Thomas, Washington
Demarr Derozen, USC
I think I have a good balance to my squad. I expect Ellington to and Dozier to go to the final four at least. Hopefully Singler and Thomas get to the elite 8.
I think the key to me having a good shot to win is Harden. I have them actually going to the elite 8 in my bracket, but they could be upset in round 1.
Marmel, you have a nice roster though I'm not big on Uconn in the tourney. Still, all good picks throughout.

Well that would suck for me! It's certainly possible any of those teams lose, but I don't see that many Pac-10 teams going out in round 1. I might have went too Pac-10 heavy, but we obviously have different biases.

LOL! PAC10, Big10 (outside of MSU) and Pitt have screwed me for so long in the tournaments that I now feel they all suck and must have them lose early.

Yeah, well I won my office pool last year, but normally I am done by the time the Final 4 rolls around. Sometimes the Elite 8.
However, Pitt has fucked me so many years in a row that I have them losing in the Sweet 16 this year. I refuse to pick them past the Sweet 16 anymore.....which of course means they actually make a Final 4 this year. Pitt and I are mortal enemies.

Jonny Flynn, Syracuse

Love my top 4, not wild about the last two. Scheyer in particular was a steal, going quite a bit after teammates he has outscored since moving to the point. Other than that, this appears to be a variation on picking teams to advance far.
