So it's already started on the other side of the world.
Google has announced the new gBall GPS ball tracking for Australian Rules Football.
Introducing the gBall™ (http://www.google.com.au/intl/en/gball/)
Please let it hurry up and be over.

I saw last night that Alan Shearer had been named manager at Newcastle United, and it took me a while to convince myself it wasn't an April Fool's joke.

Anyone else remember the good ole days when Jim had his April Fool's Day stuff every year? It was always entertaining.

12 years ago today I started work at Sports Interactive .... there were all of 4 people full time within the company at that point (myself, Paul, Ov and me) and another chap (Grez) working part time doing odds or sods.
All bar Grez (who emigrated to America about 8 years ago) are still working at SI - kinda weird to think how much things have changed since those early days here though, back then we were all young and single - now we're all married with kids.
PS - Was kinda weird that I started a new job on Aprils Fools day - although I think at the time I was too nervous to even notice :D

Out of curiosity, how many people work at SI now?

I hate April Fool's Day now. It was fun before the internet, but now it's just a colossal annoyance. None of the fake stuff is funny, and no one falls for it, so why bother?
Bah.

I thought I had one of those April Fools viruses this morning, because my computer would not start.
I didn't believe or want to believe I had a virus, but my Anti-virus software quarantined a file about a week ago. The file in question was the editor for the Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday game. Now, I have rarely used this file since installing the game and have not used the editor in about a year. I think it is a false positive detection probably having to do with the word doomsday in the code. And, the virus that is suppose to be in the file is only being discovered using the advanced Heuristic scan. So, I pretty much ignored the situation until this morning when the computer would not start. Then I started to panic.
I didn't hear the hard drive spinning at all and no image came up on the monitor. So, I checked the monitor first by using an older computer, no problems there. Next I tried plugging the monitor into the onboard graphic port instead of the installed graphic card. No luck. This is when I opened up the computer case. I was thinking about trying to reinstall the factory default software, but the DVD drives would not open. So, I started thinking about buying a new hard drive while cleaning quite a bit of dust out of the inside of the case.
I didn't see any loose connections anywhere at all. So, I am looking at the mother board to see if any of the jumpers would help me reset the system or let me into the bios when I notice that the hard drive is plugged into one of four similar connections. So, I thought well I might as well try plugging the hard drive into one of the other motherboard connections. Turn on the computer the hard drive starts to spin and it starts right up. It wasn't a fun last half hour, but I am glad it was a simple and inexpensive fix. I hate when things go wrong on April Fools Day.
Lame attempts at april fools day jokes so far: 2
Funny ones: 0
Please let it end.
edit: i mean at work today. I will keep a running total here. I might describe some of them when I get time.
OK I'll count this one. ocremix.org replaced their main page with that domain is available looking search page. They didn't delete the favicon so it was pretty obvious, but that's not bad. I'll bet there are a lot of scared fanboys over this one.

I pulled the old standby of fake pop quiz today.
Told the class to get out a sheet of paper, put their names at the top and announced, "Pop quiz time!".
I listed a few questions very nitpicky and specific to A Streetcar Named Desire (which we're reading).
And then for question 5, I said, "What is today's date?"
A few of them gave me that uncertain/suspicious look when they wrote it down, but by and large they were still into it.
"It's April Fool's!" I beamed, "The quiz was just a joke."
Mass groaning, laughter and crumpled paper ensued.

That's totally not green. Think about how much paper you wasted there.

Yeah, you should've gotten pissed and then told them you were counting it anyway. They wouldn't even be able to complain...they got an easy 20% if they knew what day it was.

My 4 year old called me to tell me her school burned down. As a typically unexcitable dad, though, my reaction of "uh huh" doesn't really play into April Fools jokes very well.

We were flying back from California one time on April 1st. I had the idea of saying that our flight had been canceled as a joke. It was less funny when we slept in a crummy motel that night as our flight had actually been canceled.
