View Full Version : Reliable Web Host
Solecismic

I was wondering if any of the web gurus out there had a recommendation for a reliable web host.
My current host, Hostway, has experienced some sort of DoS attack over the last three days. The server where Solecismic.com is located has been unreachable, and I'm not certain Hostway has the technical expertise to fight off this attack.
Nor am I sure they care. Most of their servers are unaffected, but I guess they have so much business that they won't move customers being hit by this to other servers.
I've been paying $30 a month, which seems about right in this day and age for something where reliability is key, but not big enough to require a dedicated server.
Any thoughts?

Avoid EasyCGI at all costs. They are under new management and were a nightmare during the transition.
When I went through that, the following thread generated some good discussion:
Web Host with ASP/PHP/MySQL w/ external access? - Front Office Football Central (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=68507&highlight=web+host)
I am currently with LiquidWeb, which has been pretty good. I know Ben has been happy with his host, and there are some other good suggestions in that thread.

What it screams is a very pissed off company owner who is losing sales right around the NFL draft simply because his web host is uninterested in fixing a serious problem.

Dreamhost has been very good for me as well. Do your due diligence, as they have had issues in the past and plenty of people hate them, but it's hard to get a better bang for your buck, and I've never had problems.

Has it been that long since I referred you guys to them? Wow.
+1 on Dreamhost, but you'll hear probably 15 different suggestions.

I've also heard good things from others about Dreamhost. Personally, I've had a good experience with hostgator.com.

pair Networks - World Class Web Hosting (http://www.pair.com/) is amazing as well. Very well rounded and a dream for php/ruby/mysql programmers.

Down time at aplus.net has been very, very minimal. I've used them for 7 1/2 years or so now. Plus they have 24/7 phone support, always staffed by native English-speakers.

Apisnetworks is great: Apis Networks - Engineered Hosting (http://apisnetworks.com/)
Reliability is important, but $30/month is quite a bit for hosting a site like Solecismic.com. I use Linode and $30 would get you a very nice virtual server. Of course then you have the headache of maintaining a server :) Linode - Xen VPS Hosting (http://www.linode.com/)
edit: Just realized Jim's post was a month old, but those two hosts are still great for anyone else!

Lifehacker just did a poll on this.
Best Personal Web Host: DreamHost (http://lifehacker.com/5546722/best-personal-web-host-dreamhost)
2 year prepayment of service for $2.69 a month is a major deal.
I made a request to them via billing support to see if I can get this deal, wish me luck.

They didn't give me the special, but they did give me a $20 credit. And that my friends is why it's always good to ask. :)

I've used Bluehost for years. They've been mostly fine. thinking about looking around at other inexpensive options.
