Rules
An individual voter, once they have picked from a particular TV show or movie franchise, may not make another pick from that TV show or movie franchise. It does not take the TV show or movie franchise out of play for other voters.
Please send me a list if you will be gone from the computer all day. This will not be some strict 6 hour or pick draft unless people are going to wait 12 + hours per pick so let's just send a list and be prepared.
PM whoever is after you!
Have fun. Don't bitch about stuff unless it's how stupid Karl is or something.

I have a pretty obvious choice for what I think is #1. I am really curious to see if the drafters also think that it is obvious.

There's no way in hell my #1 is going to make it to my pick...

I am not even sure what category will have the biggest run. It can go any way.

This draft is gonna be real hard to predict.
Mine has not been picked yet--though I admit that Psycho! was one I had not thought of. Can't really argue with it at #1.
After I thought about the list for about 5 minutes, I decided this would be what I would take if I was picking at 1.1. I have no clue after that to be honest. I'm sure like just about every FOFC draft I'll see some picks and say, "Oh yeah, why didn't I think of that? That's an obvious good one."

Also, especially here in the first round, you should PM the next person after you make your pick. Some people may not even remember that they're taking part in this.

My brother and I were talking about this today, since I hadn't read the rules that closely. He and I agreed that there were 3 picks that would be huge for the voters. But I just saw that he had another one up his sleeve with his Psycho pick (well done!). The 3 that we talked still haven't been picked yet.
DeToxRox

So far all three picks are very solid. This is going to be such a deep draft that I can't imagine too many "WTF" picks to be honest.

I apologize if my turn comes up, but at this point I'm assuming that it won't tonight. Three people have to take their turn for me to come up. :) I can send a list to someone if people want, though.

I'm sure we all will. I think the participants (and of course, the peanut gallery) should make a pact that we viciously ridicule picks that we think are garbage. It will give this draft a lot more camaraderie if we all know that we're fair game, and don't take anything personally.

I'm taking a look at my list, and outside of the suicides I just don't have a clear front-runner (my first thought when I saw this draft was Full Metal Jacket). I'm going to take a gamble that some of my better picks will still be around later on and go with what is just one of the sweetest and most unexpected death scenes in a movie.

I know that that is considered to be a major scene/event in TV - but it's so far removed from my generation that it has little impact on me - I think that could hurt with the voters.

Since the show didn't have huge viewership this may end up a way too early or WTF pick, but whatever, this was the single biggest "HOLY SHIT DID THAT JUST HAPPEN" moment I've ever had watching a television show:
1.9 - Best Explosion Death[TV or Movie] - Shane drops a grenade in Lem's car - The Shield
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-_MlmtnCRXs&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-_MlmtnCRXs&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I put the Psycho shower scene as 1 and Pyle as 2.

Probably so, my philosophy in this one is different than in any other draft I've been in. Except for a select *very* few picks my feeling is that what goes 1st in a category vs what goes 10th in a category will probably run pretty close together and it's just going to be what shows/movies voters happen to like the best that decides it. Popularity decides things in a lot of drafts but I see that being the case more here than usual. So I'm just taking my favorites and hoping to hit a nerve here or there with a voter or two.
I should note that this strategy always bombs. I'm doomed ;)

Yeah, have to think Marvin would have been available much later (and if not, there would be many other for that category). This draft is interesting compared to others as there are SO MANY choices, but there are definitely some that are first round quality that have been picked (Godfather, Pyscho, Pyle) and some that are not. Will be interesting if at the end that comes into it at all or not.

great picks so far. sonny and mash were the 2 of the 3 other great picks out there. i know the other one will be picked soon.
i was thinking the marvin pick would have been a great comedy pick. the whole scene is classic dark comedy.
if one has not seen godfather and bonnie and clyde i wonder how they will judge the 2 scenes? very alike
just a clarification. is the new hero death category a scene where the hero dies or where the hero kills the bad guy? or does it matter?

So far, I see the picks falling into two categories: safe and risky. I think there are movies and show, therefore deaths, that would be recognizable to most of the voters. Then there are those picks that either you get it or you don't. Shield, as mentioned, is one; so is The Wire.

Dola, let's put it this way more people on FOFC have seen Susan dying then they have any of the other TV deaths so far. In my opinion anyways.
That's true, but it wasn't really all that important to the show or that big of a deal. We all knew she would be gotten rid of somehow.

I realize I am in a very small minority when I dont know something from Seinfeld. But in terms of deaths. not only was it a bigger character. (was with the show three seasons) but there is NO way that any death that happened on Seinfeld was bigger than Col. Blake's. That was an iconic moment in the show. I am sure we will come up with other deaths that are Iconic to the show they represent.
I also realize that iwill not ever win one of these because I am older than alot of folks...well not Buccaneer.

Man, I admit when I saw this thread go up, I was sorta "WTH?!?" and didn't come in. Now that I have and see what's going on and realize this draft's potential, I am thinking this is going to be pretty flippin' awesome. Half the movies made involve some sort of death, for cryin' out loud. And while TV is less "death friendly", there are choices there to be had.
I have noticed one trend already, and I am interested to see if it continues, or if people will begin to pickup on options outside of that trend at some point.
BTW, this is probably obvious, so I'll feel stupid later, but whatever--what the heck is "ToD"?

Oh, boy. This is really tough. I am making this pick based on which death I think has the higher probability of being chosen between now and my next pick. Using that as the basis, I will go with this:
4.2 Best Melee Death-King Mufasa dies-The Lion King
YouTube - Mufasa's Death-Lion King-ENGLISH (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdjn_85h1Ow)
I am the antithesis of an animated movie fan. In fact, the only one I've watched in the better part of a decade is "Finding Nemo", which I hated. Saying that, this death was fantastic, and unexpected.
Now, please, fellow drafters: Draft the way I would expect you, and let my next prized pick fall to me. It should happen. I don't foresee any of you smart people being smart enough to choose my mid-round white whale.

I chose this one not only because of the emotion and humanity that you could see coming out of Wade during the scene, but also becasue of the emotion and humanity that it brought out in the men around him during, and after his death. I will always hold it against the Captain that he decided to not move past the the Radar Tower.
larrymcg421
04-26-2009, 10:15 AM
That's a great pick, but I support the Captain's reasoning. If they left the maching gun nest, then they'd just be leaving it for someone else to get killed. If it was a larger unit, they could've been decimated if they didn't see the nest before it saw them.

I hadn't considered that scene at all larry, but a pretty good pick I think.

Yeah, that's an excellent pick. Very powerful scene. I remember the first time I saw that, I so hated Tom Berenger's character I wanted to reach through the screen and kill him myself.

Running it in super-slo-mo, with lame techno music dubbed in doesn't make it a great pick, I'm afraid.
It's the only one I could find. I would love to swap it with a better one if you can find it.

4.9 - Best serial killer, Leatherface - Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Truly one of the most terrifying characters to ever grace the movie screen.

Classic scene. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, skip to around the 1 minute mark.

I hope I'm not crashing the party with my comments, but that Samuel L Jackson death was by far the best WTF moment I have ever seen in a movie (and it was an abysmal movie for the other hour and a half) Great, great pick that hopefully won't get marked down because the movie was so bad.

I'm going action I think.

Definitely agree. This is one scene I had in mind when I first started reading along in this thread. Great, great, pick.
Hope it's okay to do this:

I disagree. I remember seeing that movie several years ago and thought that part was very cheesy (seeing it again confirms it). Jaws did it much more suspenseful 20 years earlier. Pales in comparison to many of the death picks, imo.

Well, yeah I would definitely pick it for comedy rather than action. In that category though, it pretty much stands alone IMO.

stevew's suicide pick seems pretty good, but am I the only one that hasn't seen DBS or heard of Bill Dwyer?
And now for more of why people don't like me when it comes to drafts. :)
Is it just me, or do the "double" picks from movies take away from those picks? I think there should have been a rule taking a movie away if someone else picked it. In lieu of that, however, it seems to diminish the individual picks when you realize that movie was used for something else. I suppose some movies have very specific deaths that go in specific categories, but....

I have not seen either.. Also you have a point on the "double picks" but we decided that they be allowed. I think that there are several movies where the double dipping into them makes sense.

I considered Drago but...Rocky IV just felt like this big long music video and I couldn't get emotionally involved at any point. I mean don't get me wrong, I own all 6 Rocky films, but I'd probably rank IV down there with V in emotional impact.

5.4 - Best death in a comedic movie - Brian's crucifixion, Life of Brian
