Shouldn't mega-millions be a million millions?

I've never understood the logic of buying lottery tickets when the pot becomes astronomical. Not only are your odds worse (because everyone and their grandma is scarfing up tickets), but really, was the previous pot not enough for you? You're willing to shell out $5 on 1 in a trillion odds to win 220mil, but at 150mil it just wasn't worth your cash?

I bought tickets for last Friday's after a bird crapped on my shoulder.

All I ended up with is a dirty shirt.

The odds do not changed based on the number of overall tickets sold. Each individual pick has (for Mega Millions) approximately a 1 in 176 million chance of winning the jackpot. This is a constant, whether one ticket is sold, or 2 billion are sold.

However, the more tickets that are sold, the chance of any of those numbers winning increases. If you buy 5 tickets, then there is an approximately 1 in 35 million chance that one of the 5 numbers will win. So the more tickets overall that are sold increase the chances of multiple winners splitting the pot.

Fair enough, although I think my point is still quite valid.

I don't live in a state that has that game. 220 million is a lot of money... I am not sure I would be able to handle that much. Outside of a few cars and a nice house what else would there be to spend it on? (Besides family of course)

I'll say personally it's not about "Well, $50 million isn't enough, so I'll play for $150 million." More like, I'm not gonna waste $5 every week on it, but I will once every 6 months.

I don't see the point of paying because if I apply myself I can get it for free. :D That being said I think I would walk around for a day in a big fur coat in the middle of the summer and try to mack women on South Beach. LOL. Or better yet I would walk around in a bathroom like I escaped the looney bin trying to mack women.

After I get rejected I would drive pass them in my Aston Martin or some other expensive car. LOL. Oh yes this thought of being a millionaire is very exciting. ;)

Seems as good a place as any to discuss this -- what would you do if you never had to work again? I've got a friend who's in this situation -- he's said that he's independently wealthy, and he hasn't ever seemed monetarily concerned with working. I was just talking about him with lurker, and we were trying to think what we would do if we were in that situation. So...would you guys still work, just to have something to do? Or...uh..other stuff completely?

I would still want to work, but I'm sure the first day that I didn't feel like getting out of bed, or wanted to go a Giants game (cause I'd have season tickets, you know), I'd tell them to go stuff themselves.

Dabble in racehorses. Spend six month stints in different European countries. If I got bored at home open up a small game shop with hours being whatever the hell I felt like. Have a personal trainer. Paint. I could go on.....

I wouldn't keep doing the work I'm doing now, that's for sure. I would probably go ahead and take the time to go back to school for some things I'm interested in. Then I have a long list of work-like interests that would be easier to do if you didn't have to worry about supporting yourself and your family. Things like international development or starting a school that I can't really do these days 'cause they don't pay.

1. Go to a school of music and focus on theory. I'm a fledgling bassist, so I'd love to give that a shot.

2. I'd love to help out on humanitarian/relief missions. I'm a nurse, too--figured that would come in handy there. Might as well since I wouldn't be working anymore in this scenario. :D

Heck no I wouldn't work and by work, I mean, what the majority of us Americans do Monday thru Friday.

I would definitely travel all over the place. Try my hand at starting my own business (what, I have no idea). Pay all of my parents debt off so they don't have to worry about retireing. Hook a few friends up. My main thing I'd like to do, would be to make movies.

For the sake of the discussion, I'm assuming I won the $220M lottery.

I'd work, I'd have to do something because I couldn't just sit around all day and couldn't jet around the world because my daughter is only 1 1/2 and she would need some stable lifestyle.

Most likely I would open a game design company (both computer and board game).

I'd be playing in multiple WSOP events, buy Packer season tickets and setup a room in whatever home I own to collect and display swords. Vacationing would definitely be down via cruise ship as I'd love to go to Alaska, Antartica and take a cruise around the world.

After a few months of completely slacking off, I would then start up some sort of charitable venture with an environmental slant.

If I won $220 million?

I would definitely quit and relish in it.

I would likely do nothing for a while. Just sit back and enjoy life. I'd probably try to get in better shape, but other than that, it would be a lot of chillaxing with my wife, family, friends and dog.

I would certainly donate a lot of money (with someone else managing it) to certain charities/causes I believe in. Other than over-seeing things at a very high level, I don't think I'd get too terribly involved.

I would take care of my family/close friends.

At some point I would like to get involved in something I really enjoy, be it hockey, video games, comics, role playing games, something like that. No idea in what type of capacity, but it'd be something I'd look into. Eventually.

I'll have to pick up a few tickets. Getting tickets for the poker group, a group at work pick them up and here will probably be a larger group from work getting them too.

My theory is that I hve even less of a chance to win because I usually have the "what if" plan in my head if I did win.

If I won on my own:
- My daughters would have a nice fund set up for them for when they turn 18.
- SEVERAL friends and family members would be made quite happy.
- Scholarship fund setup for the school which I went to (anonymously).
- I would start my own business.
- The usual travel and enjoy stuff as well (kick ass entertainment room setup in the new house which I would have built).

I think of a lottery ticket as buying a little fun for the day (or a couple of days), like 1/8th of a movie ticket. It's always a conversation piece- the inevitable "what would you do if you won $X million". It's like buying a fun little bit of hope for $1. :)

Then I would become the T Boone Pickens of UTEP, donating millions of dollars to the school and getting my name on a few buildings. And then I would help my siblings out with any monetary issues they may have.

I would by a nice house for the wife and I (nothing too extravagant, but bigger than our current house) and a Porsche for myself, and the rest goes into savings so we can live off the interest...

Just start chatting dudes up in the waiting rooms of brothels.

Or go to strip clubs a lot. The girls there will all want to be your friend.

In any case, don't get a part time job to meet people. With that kind of money, you'd find lots of folks approaching you, thus taking the awkwardness out of the situation.

I would be able to clear off some debt and have more than enough to have a nice down payment. With the 220, I think a year of travel would about do it for me. If I win the Lottery I am going to invest the money. My adviser says that I can just put the money in the stock market. He says that the stock market always goes up, and I can just put my money in there and forget about it.

Brought 93 tickets minus snacks from the gas station. If I win I want to fight a member from this board for 10,000 dollars UFC style. (I might be joking)

Oh yeah? Too bad it isn't your ass I want to kick. (No homo)

Or maybe for 5000 I show up at their house and kick them in the nuts.

JiMG, Noop?

I gladly vote Lathum. But frankly I've always been modest enough in my ambition that I would be happy with the 250k 2nd place prize. I would be able to clear off some debt and have more than enough to have a nice down payment. With the 220, I think a year of travel would about do it for me. After that I would need to get back to work. I work at what I do because I like it. I hope that would be enough to keep my motivation.

SOME debt?!?!

I don't think I would take the lump sum...

I gather you learned nothing in college about the present day value of money?

I understand more, if you think you'd blow it all on hookers and cocain in the first couple years.

I'd probably heavily invest in gold and precious metals, hopefully that would protect against inflation.

JiMG, Noop?

Nope. I actually I am not bothered by him at all. Though some of his views are a bit extreme(I am sure mine our too) I respect that he is frank and open about it.

I am too young to have that kind of money. I wouldn't spend it on coke and hookers but I would spend it on stupid things. I am fully aware that I am not mature enough to handle that much money.

So I would take the payments and learn to mature. So for the first year or two I can go ape shit on a budget then settle down and live like a undercover millionaire.

Cash value is 143.5 million, per the tickets I just purchased.

Let's see, we'd pay off all our debt, buy a couple new cars (nothing extravagant), buy a house (again, nothing extravagant), and buy houses for our family out here in Austin, they either take 'em or leave 'em. Start trust funds for our nieces/nephews and kids so they can have $$ for college, pay off family's debts, and invest the rest.

There are still a ton of houses for sale in my neighborhood. You can start your own compound. :D
