Looking for anyone who might be interested in a casual play-by-post game of 4th edition D&D right here on FOFC. I'd love to have around 5 players starting at 1st level.
If there's sufficient interest I'll post more information.

I'd be interested, as long as by "casual", you mean you don't need the players to be on the board 18 hours a day to constantly check for updates. :)

Never played but have always been interested.

Sure, I'm interested, depending on the schedule, as Sabotai said. I'm pretty familiar with 4th edition.

I'd be interested. I haven't played since 2nd edition though, so I'd be a bit rusty. Willing to deal with that?

What kind of schedule are we talking about?

I do wonder how well 4th edition will work as a play by post, since it's so much more miniatures/tactics oriented than previous versions. I'm sure it will work out somehow.

Never played, but if you needed another player, I could. Or I'd watch and see how it all goes. :)

This is my thinking. Lets assume a party of 6 people. An average encounter is going to last 3-5 rounds. So we're looking at 18-30 posts required by the players alone for one encounter. And that's assuming there are no questions, mistakes, etc. Plus, the DM will need to have some kind of mapping tool to draw out where everyone is after each move action, and play all the monster turns, etc.
My guess is a given encounter would require in the range of 75-100 posts, all in a specific order.

Not 4th edition, but if someone did a 1st edition I'd be interested.

That's one of the reasons I want to start a game here, because I know most of us have lives and can't post 20 times a day. By casual, I'm thinking at least one post a day. Since most of us are on here at least once a day, that should be a nice pace.

It actually works better. There's a number of web-based programs I can use to post maps on a regular basis to allow a more tactical combat.
Yes, combat might take some time, but since we're playing this casually, we have the time to do it.
To roll dice, we use Invisible Castle, a online dice web tool that generated bbcode that works on this site. For character creations, we have a good number of free programs that automate that.

Not 4th edition, but if someone did a 1st edition I'd be interested.
I'd do 2nd.
It's such a geeky statement, I know. 2nd was backwards compatible with a minimum of conversion. 3rd was not as easy but 4th is just out there. I'm a 2nd man.

THAc0 kills me. I've seen the light, and it is 4th edition.

Cool. Be happy to hear any suggestions you have to make something like this work, regardless of the system.
Hell, I'd be willing to play Rifts by pbp, if people would play.
Or even Vampire.

Thaco was good, it was just badly sold. It was explained in a way that was unintuitive, whnen you could have made it intutiive.
How do you hit: Call Thaco your Target inseatd of Thaco. How do you know if you hit? d20 roll + any bonuses (strength, skill, magic) + AC of target. If you hit your Target, you hit. You just had to sell it the right way.

Sounds like a good plan - I'm looking forward to it - I really like 4th edition and the changes they made to the game, really plays more like an MMO which I think is a good model.

I'd like to try 4E. I got a Players Manual and DM Guide a couple of months ago with my monthly 40% off Borders coupons.
That said, I'd really like to watch for a while before playing- get used to the new stuff and maybe jump in when someone dies or something like that.

We'll be using MapTool for maps, which I can post right on the forums, or have players log on to a persistant server to see the updated map at any point.
Invisible Castle will be used for dice rolling.
It'd be nice if you knew 4th ed rules and had the books, but it's not a dealbreaker. In some respect, not knowing the rules might be better.
Once I have 5 players, we can get the ball rolling on character designs. Again, if you want to play, and don't know the rules, we can work with that. What really is needed is a active imagination and a willlingness to post in the game at least once a day.
Would the Dynasty board be the best to start the actual game, or Off Topic?
