View Full Version : Run Direction and the Distribution of KRO

I just noticed this so I thought I'd share it and see of anyone has done more in-depth testing of this.

In one of my test leagues I was running an offense where ALL of my runs go to the outside of my tackles. My QB scrambles frequently so who knows where those runs went but he had 39 carries. My run distance settings are: 20-20-10-0-0-10-20-20, where the 0s are in the "inside left/right guard" box.

My runs per direction ended up being 158 to the left, 111 up the middle, and 171 to the right. So the first thing I notice was that either the "inside left/right tackle" box counts as a "middle" run or there are some game situations that override those settings.

More interestingly I noticed that my lineman had these stats:

LT = 82 KRO
LG = 68 KRO
C = 79 KRO
RG = 62 KRO
RT = 59 KRO

My lineman all have 80+ in Blocking Strength and Run Blocking.

So then, how does my C get the second most KRO on my team? Incidentally he led in % with 40.5. My current hypothesis is that KRO must be distributed to the OL members regardless of whether they were around the run or not which makes me wonder if the run blocking ability of the entire line might be used in the calculation to see if a run succeeds, regardless of where the run actually goes. I had previously been thinking that I could use a C with only pass block ratings if I used this directional setup but now i would say not...

well in real life the center would pull on a sweep and end up being a blocker in the cut back lane for the running back. So maybe the game is just like that.

I believe that is the conventional wisdom, yes. Seem to remember reading that KRBs are assigned after the play, just based on percentages. I know anecdotally that my centers get an oddly high number of KROs.

I think "assigned after the play" defines it nicely, given out to players randomly but possibly being tied to RunBlock ratings? Wouldn't take much more testing to see this but I'm guessing it's another in a long line of things I discover only to discover that most of the good GMs already know it :)

I remember some discussion about pass plays also being like this to some extent where the play is decided by whatever means it is decided, and then afterwards the "cause" of the broken play is rolled on and stats given out (ie-sack, hurry, kd, bad throw, defensed or dropped?).

Zull, I hadn't thought of that, the fact that centers and guards are sometimes asked to shuffle or pull to block on the outside. Interesting but I doubt this is actually in effect in the game. The more I learn about the game the more I see that things need not be as complex as they would be in real life and often the stats will lead us astray if we overthink it. Or at least we should pay more important to team stats than anything.

Pretty extensive discussion of KRBs here (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=57507&highlight=KRB).
