Any interest in a media-intensive DDS:PB 95-96 On MP League?

A couple of guys and I from the DDS:PB MP league I was in for a while are going to be starting up one based on Nephrinn's 95-96 rosters and then most likely an edited version of La Tulipe's files.

Ideally we'd be looking at a fairly media-intensive league (i.e. articles) and the like, with discussion, etc... something to keep the league active and busy as much as possible.

We're looking at two days simmed each day (because trying to sim two games each sim is too hard with the staggered schedule), 5 or 6 days a week, leaning more towards 6 at the moment.

DDS:PB would be required, because first, I think you get more out of an MP league if you have DDS and second, given my position on the WS boards, it wouldn't look right if we had non-DDS owners in the league.

Not sure how much interest this'll generate, but I thought I'd throw it out there. :)

Most teams are available as of right now. The ones that are NOT are: Boston Celtics (obviously), Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic.

I wanted to give FOFC first crack after the two guys I'm starting it up with since I've known most of you longer and think you'll be active owners. :)

That would be -awesome-. :) I'd prefer just to have all the articles and stuff on the forums, though, so it's easier for people to read and comment. Plus it saves you time by not having to set up the software for the blog stuff.

I guess I'd say I got too caught up in micro-managing each game, and as a result, never got as far as a season or two into it. Or I'd get bored going through the recruiting phase, which seemed to take a long time. I guess those things wouldn't happen in an NBA-style MP league.

I've downloaded the rosters we're going to use, in my opinion one thing needs to be tweaked before staring : contracts.

Else at the end of the first season there are way too many free agents and then the rosters mean absolutely nothing...

Well, extensions will be allowed during in-season. :) We're working on establishing a player agency system so that all players will be extension-eligible, rather than just the ones DDS makes eligible. That should alleviate the concerns about too many free agents.

Also, I imagine quite a few trades will happen, as often does in MP leagues, which will change rosters significantly.

It's nothing against Nephrinn's draft files, which I'm sure are quite good. It's just that with La Tulipe's files, we have a consistent base draft file maker up to the 2005 draft versus 2000 with Nephrinn's.

Renouncing means you're renouncing your Bird rights to the player.

With Bird rights retained, you're able to offer more years and more money to retain the player than other teams will.

If you renounce your rights, then you can only offer the same max money and years as everyone else (assuming cap space of course).

On the other hand, if you renounce a player, his salary then comes off your cap number.

In solo player DDS, if you're over the cap too much you can get fired.

I'm considering using a version of the financial system from the other MP league I was in, where if you exceeded the cap by a certain amount, you could lose your low-level and mid-level exceptions, etc.

I figured I would post a little about this in case people are playing with the demo over the holiday weekend.

In the NBA there is something called the "Bird Exception" - this allows teams to resign their own player when he becomes a free agent to any amount they want up to the maximum salary as long as he has played at least 3 consecutive seasons (bird years) for any one team or combo of teams as long as he was not cut or was not simply signed as a free agent.

Now, if your team is over the salary cap you can continue to sign your own free agents and rookies drafted but you can only sign other teams free agents to either a minimum contract or using one of the exceptions. Lets say you have a really good player who makes like 15 million dollars and your team is right at the cap. Well he's a free agent and so is another superstar. You might think that since your player is a free agent his 15 million comes off the books and you could use that 15 million to sign the other guy and then go offer your guy whatever you want with his bird rights....that's where renouncing contracts comes in.

When your players become free agents they are assigned a number (basically a raise on the final year of thier previous contract) and that number counts against your cap until you either resign the player (then his new contract counts), someone else signs him (then his contract is off the books) or you renounce his contract. If you renounce his contract then his "assigned contract" no longer counts against your cap and the player is stripped of his bird rights. You can still sign him but if you are over the cap then you only have the options you would have if he was someone else's free agent.

Basically, if you want to resign the guy do not renounce his rights. If you don't want anything to do with him and want his money off the books then renounce him.

There's no real penalty for it in the game unless you are playing with the ability to be fired turned on and your owner told you not to spend that much.

In the NBA the penalty is the luxury tax (the real $). Teams who spend over the luxury cap limit are taxed extra on those players and that gets very expensive in a hurry. There's no better penalty than an empty wallet :)

This is really 3 teams left because DT is going to take whatever last team is.

Philly strikes me as a tweener team, the Bucks and Nets are in rebuilding mode, though Milwaukee has some nice guys in Vin Baker and Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson and Golden State is a definite playoff team, maybe even a West contender with the right move or two.

No problem - like I said I'm going to post some salary stuff for DDS:PB2 next week which will explain the financials pretty well. In addition to all the stuff DDS:PB has DDS:PB2 will introduce restricted free agency, qualifying offers and player/team/early termination options on contracts.

In addition to that DDS:PB2 is also going to have a limited financial model which will eliminate bird rights, options, trade restrictions and let you operate with a hard cap rather than the "soft cap" in the normal mode. That is if you play as a NBA team - if you choose to play as one of the European teams you'll get an annual budget and can spend whatever money you have available to you that season (kind of like getting your annual recruiting budget in DDS:CB)

Not that any of that pertains to this league - just thought I would mention it in case any of you are interested in the upcoming next version of the game.

And then is he either guaranteed to be a bust (in which case no one should draft him high) or will the game determine how they pan out?

If it is a case where real life performance totally dictates their DDSPB performance, than I suppose there won't be much of a strategy at all here.

They're used with La Tulipe's draft files as the basis and then some modifications to that base.

My guess is that La Tulipe based his draft files largely on what their eventual careers turned out to be; however, there's no 100% guarantee as to who will turn out great and who won't. Playing time is crucial to development of rookies and that makes the high school players, who will naturally be much more raw, that much more of a gamble.

There's also the question of system, etc.

So it's a combination of the two, I suppose. Taber's done most of the editing of the database, though I'll be making some changes myself, based on what I've seen so far in my historical dynasty, which uses just the raw La Tulipe files.

If you mean otherwise, the League rules are a little different than the NBA and from vanilla DDS itself. :)

Here is a list of error messages, their meanings, and what you should do. Note that the messages are by number - error messages generally have a text message, often telling you what to do, but the number is the primary reference. Also note that when the number has a minus (-) sign, that is important: error 11 and error -11 mean different things. The minus sign is used for errors which have to do with communication between the eLicense software on your computer and the license servers.
If you are having a problem and you need to contact us using this Support Form link. Be sure to give us the exact message you see, including the number.

-3 or -4 Unusual. Indicates a problem with the data returned from the license server. This may be remedied by correct proxy settings. Sometimes it can be caused by the presence of personal firewall software on the computer.
Contact us using this Support Form link. Please provide exact details on the steps leading up to the error occuring.

-9 This means the eLicense software is unable to connect to the internet or to a proxy server from your computer. Check your network connections, and try different proxy settings if applicable.

17 This error is the same as "11", but applies to auto-renewable licenses.

23 (Purchase process only)This error only occurs during a desktop purchase, and means that the name and address you supplied does not exactly match the records for your credit card. You need to enter the name and address exactly as they appear on the credit card statement.

"Sorry, could not get a license at this time..." This error indicates a problem with the eLicense software on your computer. "...get a license" does not refer to license acquisition from the eLicense servers, it refers to the eLicensed application being unable to retrieve license data on your computer. With older versions of eLicense, this error may occur on Windows XP when using the Fast Switch feature, and the logged-on user is not the owner of the program. This error will also occur when trying to run eLicensed software via Terminal Server or Remote Desktop.

I had that error this time as well, allpro, and I was able to solve it by randomly turning off processes after it got hung up. Sorry, I don't know which process it was exactly that did the trick.
