Since there are a number of gaming sites that have specials from time to time, I thought this could be a good place to show all the current specials.
So currently here is what I am seeing:

Pirates (http://www.direct2drive.com/1/320/product/Buy-Sid-Meier%27s-Pirates%21-Download) (PC): $9.99 at Direct2Drive
Europa Universalis Rome Gold (http://www.impulsedriven.com/products/ESD-IMP-W194) (PC): $9.99 at Impulse
Corporate Machine (http://www.impulsedriven.com/tcm) (PC): $0.99 at Impulse
Freedom Force: Freedom Pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1662/) (PC): $6.74 at Steam

No. In my opinion it's the worst game of the EU series or indeed, any of Paradox's games.

That's too bad. I figured it would be decent based on the GameRankings (http://www.gamerankings.com/pc/943509-europa-universalis-rome/index.html)score.

Well, for $10, it may not be a bad bargain buy. I'm not sure what all patches/mod improvements have come out for it. I just remember being bitterly disappointed at how shallow and dull it seemed.

The only games I have played off the list is Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Bioshock and Freedom Force. I can vouch for those. With the others, I just checked out their reviews on GameRankings (http://www.gamerankings.com/pc/929360-dark-messiah-of-might-and-magic/index.html) and the User Score on Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/darkmessiahofmightmagic/preview_6157553.html) since they tend to get a lot of user votes.

Not a huge deal, but I picked up copies of City of Heroes: Good vs. Evil Edition at a couple of local GameStops for $9.99 each. Not bad considering it includes a month of game time ($14.99) and comes with a few in-game perks.

It's ok, but nothing special... The IGN review called it "decent" and that's about right. I'd get it for 3 bucks.
I like to call it "kick simulator 2000" because you spend of alot of time kicking things in the game.

Yep, I was tempted too, and the fact that Friday I'll spend only € 8 for Fight Night 4 (traded in some stuff) could make feel less "guilty" to spend some money on this one. Fact is, MMA is not really my thing, and I wouldn't have the time to "get into it".
As for Saints Row 2, if you liked GTA San Andreas just get it: it's a pretty fun game.

Yeah, I was going to hold off for $40. I haven't played since OOTP version 6 and the interface/intuitiveness of Puresim has kept me from playing that, so if this is solid game then it would be worth the $20

Would any of these work on a netbook? I only have 1024x600 resolution. Puresim does not, FOF will not (both because of screen resolution), TCY will, but I feel all played out on TCY. I am looking for a good text-sim that I can take with me. Yes, I could download the demos, but I am being lazy and want people to hand me the answers on a silver platter :)

I just went DS crazy yesterday getting retro game challenge, two castlevania games, puzzle quest galactrix and fire emblem the shadow dragon. I'm quite well versed in CT- best RPG ever, for my money (tho FF4 is still my favorite). I was just waiting for it to drop to play it again, tho. And, you know, I never played Crono Cross so maybe after I beat that, I could dig out the PSX or just play it on the PS2.
I'm curious how PQ: Galactrix is. I played the first up to about level 40 and beat the game, tho I was getting bored at the end.

Nice, you'll love it (if you've never played it before)
I just went DS crazy yesterday getting retro game challenge, two castlevania games, puzzle quest galactrix and fire emblem the shadow dragon. All used, so if I don't like it in 7 days, back for a full refund. I suspect I am really going to like the retro game challenge though and the two castlevania's.
I really liked Retro Game Challenge, the games themselves were good (the Haggle Man series my favorite probably) plus the in-game magazines previews and cheat codes, the conversations with the other kid before/after gaming sessions, as a whole RGC has a lot charm.
I want the sequel (which has a lot more games and moves into the 16-bit era!) to be localized but this is unlikely after the sales of the first game.

Thanks, Mizzou. Got the Orange Box, Burnout Paradise and Lego Batman for $34 shipped!
Just got this email from Sony:
Dear Valued Sony Customers,
We regret to inform you that any video game which was part of your order SW09071201583 that has not yet shipped has been cancelled. If you have previously received an email with a tracking number, the items associated with shipping confirmation have not been effected.
Your order had to be cancelled due to an overwhelming number of orders placed during a severe pricing error that occurred on our site. We have done everything possible to fulfill every order but we have exhausted all inventory.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused but, we do not anticipating any further inventory in the near future. Additionally, because this was a pricing error, we are unable to offer other products at a discount.
Thank you again for your patience and understanding,
I don't think they charged my card and the items haven't shipped, so it looks like no dice on this deal. No biggie, but anyone who tried to sneak in on this deal will probably have it canceled.

Yea, I'm really have a great time with it. There's a sequel?
SI - as for Galactrix the idiots at Gamestop put the first Puzzle Quest in the box and I didn't realize it until Sunday, so I just ended up returning it today with Fire Emblem. I don't have the patience anymore for a game like Fire Emblem and I just can't find myself playing a game with the stylus. The first puzzle quest demanded it so I assume the second one did as well.
Next game - I want to check out is The World Ends With You, but apparently its hard to find around these neck of the woods.
I am having a fun time with the newest Castlevania.
I did pick up Elder Scrolls Oblivion (game of the year version) for $25 new at Gamestop after I went to a wedding on Saturday and they were ranting and raving about it for about 2 hours.

There's a texture upgrade mod that, if your PC can handle it, greatly enhances the graphics. After you play for a while you can experiment with some of the other mods out there. It really is a great game.

I like turn-based strategy; RTS not so much. Is SotS worth my time/money?

Of those three Crusader Kings is the best IMO. Haven't played EU3 but CK is uber addictive.

It's a shame King's Bounty wants to crash 1/3 of the way through on Vista 64-bit; did that ever get patched? The listing on Steam still shows "Vista 32-bit" and I can't find word that it ever got fixed. Otherwise I'd buy that during the sale.
And the Take Command game does not list Vista compatibility at all. Oh well, saving me some money.

Make sure your video card supports pixelshader 2.0, the other requirements are pretty light.
Microsoft Windows XP/2000 1.9 Ghz Intel Pentium or similar AMD
512mb RAM
Direct X 9.0c compatible video card with at least 128mb & support for pixelshader 2.0.

How accessible are titles like CK and EU III? The last Paradox game I played was the original EU. One of the problems I faced was trying to make sense of all the feedback the game was providing. I'm not necessarily intimidated by the complexity of these kinds of games, but whether or not the game allows you to make sense of all the details.

Any of those have a very steep learning curve. Did you get to a point where you felt comfortable with EU? If you did you'll eventually figure out EU3 as well. I think there's an EU3 wiki with some good help guides.

It's been awhile since I played EU, but I remember feeling lost about what to do next at a certain point. It may have been the raft of information available and myriad variables I recall trying to consider.
I guess I might compare my experience to the one I had with Civ IV. With Civ, I always had that sense that I could do any number of things with the next turn and could have a pretty clear understanding of why I was making that decision and the possible range of consequences that could follow from it. I didn't always get that sense from EU. I could do any number of things, but I wasn't always clear about why I should be making that decision and even less clear about the potential consequences. I know Paradox is not intending to create Civ-style games, but are any of these more recent titles a few steps up from Civ when it comes to how clearly the player knows what might be done and its range of outcomes? Does this question make sense?
'Course maybe for $5, something like CK might be worth trying anyways.

It makes perfect sense, but I don't have a good answer for you. The Paradox games(EU/CK/HOI/Vicki) are just very demanding for a new user. Eventually it becomes pretty routine and you can focus on different sets of info depending on what you want to do, but I don't know how to get to that point without a lot of frustration.

I think that CK is the the most logical for a new user. I was able to get up and running with that much faster. As far as the graphics question. I have a very old Inspiron 600m (single core 1.6, integrated graphics) and I can play CK, but I could never touch EU3. I tried Diplomacy and the graphics on that killed my system. Vicki would be about the same as CK.
What is SotS? I'm always looking for a good space 4x.
Sword of the Stars. I think that it has 3 or 4 expansions, with the last just coming out about a month ago, and I have them all, but haven't played it a whole lot, thanks to just getting into Guild Wars with my oldest son.

I was leery of getting King's Bounty because of the 64-bit stuff. I ended up buying it anyway and played it for an hour or hour and a half and had no issues. Really enjoyed it.
I'm running Windows 7 so that might be different, but I asked around a bit beforehand and heard of some people on Vista 64 who had no problems also. It sounds like it's a crapshoot.

I absolutely love TWEWY but I know some who don't and the gulf is basically gameplay. I think those who like or even just stick with the gameplay will like the story. Those who can't stand it won't play long enough to get into the story. For my money, one of the best games on the DS.

Does anyone have Need for Speed: Shift yet? There's a thread that popped up over at NeoGaf with some pretty troubling bugs. Main issues are the 360 version of the game freezing while attempting to sign in to the PSN store and the other being the 'jumping' car physics issue when you go off the road on both versions. It appears to be pretty buggy.

I couldn't resist getting Titan Quest + expansion pack for $5. Digital distribution seems to have had a major effect on pc game pricing. Seems like every month either Steam or D2D is having some great game on supersale.

You can trade in 2 games from a list at Gamestop and get Brutal Legend for $20. This is great if you already have one game to trade in. FIFA 090 is on the list and is $20 at Gamestop so grab then trade it in with the game you already have to get Brutal Legend for $40 instead of $60...

I kid you not. If I had one game to choose from and they locked me up with that one game, I'd choose CIV4 in a heartbeat. I've got a top list that I play pretty regularly (FM series is a big favorite of mine), but I can't think of a game that's even comes close to the amount of enjoyment I've got out of CIV4. It's just a fantastic game.

oooh this is a good question.
my experience with other games (read: nba 2k9 on steam, and madden08 on d2d or wherever i got it from) is that mods work fine. you just have to point the ones with auto-installers to the right directory and you're fine.

I thought Civ3 was an above average game when I played it. Civ4 makes it look below average at best. I'd also note that it has little to do with the graphics and everything to do with the gameplay mechanics. They're worlds better than any of the previous Civ games. It's the kind of leap you'd love to see from other franchises that tend to get caught in a run and not look for big way to improve.

I've seen it on Steam. From the screenshots, it seems a little too graphical.
I guess I'm looking for something with more of an overhead view that really features the characters and their skill/level growth. It could be a little older and graphics aren't much of a factor -- just looking for the type of sweeping RPGs I used to play when I was a kid (like the early Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior games).
