Anyone else excited about this game? I played the first 3 games to death and the demo seems pretty solid. Online play with the game has always been fun and maybe we can get some FOFC matchups going.

Game I've looked forward to the most. Cannot wait.

Played the demo a lot today. The controls take some getting used to. The more I played, though, the more I was able to fight like a boxer and not like a Tekken game and started really dominating the opponent (probably the easiest level).
Can't wait to get this one.

I gotta admit: I'm really excited to play as Tyson.

How do the controls differ from the last FN game, or do they?

You have to use the analog stick to throw punches, no more button mashing.

Hopefully they strike the right balance between 'boxing' and action. This franchise is a lot of fun when that balance is struck. They've done that to mixed degrees in the past iterations.
Anyone heard anything on if there are any changes to the career mode?
I was really looking for this, but now that i have UFC undisputed... it all will depend on how deep is the career mode (and i don't have a lot of hope).

I gotta be honest: first thing I'm going to do when I get this game is matchup up Ali v. Tyson and let it play out.
...then I'm going to take Manny Pacquiao and dominate. :)

FN3 used analog sticks too, right? I thought the OP meant it changed from FN3, not from last-gen.

Yes, in FN3 you could use the right analog stick to throw punches, but using the buttons was an option (that I always eventually took with the FN games). In this one, you can only use the stick.
They did make some improvements. In the last game(s), you had to hold the left trigger and perform the punch to throw to the body. Now (except for jabs and straights which still require the left trigger), you just either move the stick left or right to throw a hook to the body, or to the left or right and down (to the "corner" of the stick) to throw an uppercut to the body. It makes throwing to the body much easier.
Also, to throw a haymaker (and the animation for it has been tuned down), you hold the right shoulder button and perform the punch. Now more "reaching back" on the right analog stick, which always made the punch take way too long.
A few other changes: No more parry move, which was always the thing I hated the most about the previous games. You can also weave by using the left stick by doing the same motion as you would to throw a hook on the right stick. I'm sure I am forgetting somethings, but the sticks are used to do more things now, and it's going tot ake a bit getting used to (at least for me it will since I didn't use the sticks to throw punches in the previous games)

I didn't like using the sticks at all. Had more fun with the buttons.
Umm so far not liking the control scheme at all. I used the sticks in FNR3 too, but the system was better, right now i just throw random punches with little control to the kind of punch and aiming.
Sad to say this as i loved FNR3, but unless the career mode is really deep, i'm afraid i'll pass and i'll keep enjoying UFC.

I haven't played any of the Fight Nights but downloaded the demo to this. I really wasn't impressed at all.

Using the buttons for throwing punches may make it into DLC.

I just played about an hour and a half of the demo and thought it was pretty cool. The controls were decent, though I kept throwing uppercuts when I was trying to throw hooks. Practice will probably help with that. I think I lost my first 6 fights without winning a single round, but eventually got the hang of it and won a few fights. I had some good stunning blows, but no knockdowns. This game looks like it has a bunch of potential.

This is probably the most fluid knockout combination I have put together in the demo. Pacman wasn't able to beat the 10 count.

This game is sensational. Just feels good to play. I started a legacy to get a feel for it and I am currently in the semis of the opening 16 man amateur tournament. First two fights were totally different. First guy was a can who tried to brawl with me and I won a decision from. The other guy was a counter puncher who almost KO'd me but I won the first 3 rounds and escaped with a 2 pt win.

I was having the same sort of issues. Are there any sliders in the game? I like the feel of the demo but I'd like to slow it down a little so a speed slider would be perfect.
Love how fluid the combos are now. I've always hated the minigames in the career mode and I'm sure they're back and as aggravating as ever.
I'm curious about how the styles are represented also. One of my main gripes with Undisputed was the lack of difference height/reach plays overall. You can't use jabs effectively to stay outside. I hope this does a better job than the previous FN games also in that regard.
Still undecided on grabbing it. Anxious to hear more impressions.

There are sliders though I have not toyed with them yet.
As far as styles, so far there are plenty of different styles. In my Legacy I just was obliterated by a guy who didn't have much power but was relentless on the attack, totally using his speed to stick and move. Then he'd get inside and pummel me when I was gassed.
I thankfully rebounded with a fight vs a bigger LHW who was living off the jab and fighting a conservative fight. I wore him down with body shots and in the 4th round of a 6th round fight which I had dominated the action, he went for broke because chances of him winning a decision weren't good. He got wild and I timed an uppercut that floored him for the KO win.
The hardest fight I've had though is vs a Southpaw who just brawled. It was a blast. Both guys were knocked down several times but thankfully I won on points.
This is a lot of fun.

Yeah, they even built that into the demo. Unless the retail game is different (have not gotten it yet), you have to be pretty quick to it. It only keeps the last 20 or so seconds so if you want a video of something, you have to get it right away (unless I missed something).

Picked this up today. Created a heavyweight in legacy mode and fought through the amateur tournament.
Thus far, I'm very impressed. I'm just a casual boxing fan, but this is the closest I've seen a game come to actually feeling like boxing rather than button mashing. The fighters are varied in their styles and none of the 4 fights I fought felt like the other.
The first two fights were rather uneventful other than landing my first knockdown as the bell sounded in the last round against my first opponent. My third fight in the tournament was against a guy that stayed close to me trying to pound the body while sneaking in uppercuts here and there. I won, but it was frustrating because I still suck and struggled to use my jab to keep him off of me. The fourth fight was a guy that simply went for a knockout from the very beginning. Nearly everything was a powershot to the head. I won all 4 fights on points with a knockdown in two of the fights.

The training takes practice. It took me several times to get the hang of the maize bag, double end bag and the one where you have to push the bag forward. The two sparring ones are really easy to get the points you need. You can practice them outside of legacy mode. I think it's under "My Corner", but I don't have the game on so I'm not sure.
The one I'm still struggling with is the last combo one (where you have to throw certain punches in order). I still end up messing up a few of the combos and getting a Prospect score on it, so that one I still sim.

Legacy mode is a massive improvement over FN3. The end of year awards are a waste of time, though. It seems random, and some just don't make sense (why have a "best round" award and not say which round it's for?). CPU retirement is a bit off too. Too many CPU guys retire way too early.
But aside from those two things, legacy mode (so far) is great.

Yeah, the combo one is the one that pisses me off the most. Although, I don't like the one where you push the bag either. The others I'm getting better at. From what I've read the ps3 still has some slow load times, guess it doesn't install much to the HD to quicken things up? But, like Madden and rosters, ps3 is the version I'll buy if the 360 needs gold to use CAB.

So I make a middleweight a couple days ago and I get off to a pretty solid start. My fighter was 14(10)-0 with my major problems coming against good counterpunchers.
I schedule a fight that was going to be my biggest test up until then going up against an AI generated fighter who had an overall rating of 78 (my fighter was 73). The day of the fight comes and I get a message stating that the guy I was supposed to fight pulled out at the last minute, but Cory Spinks was willing to step in. Cory Spinks is rated 89 and had knocked out every opponent he had faced since my legacy started simming so needless to say I'm a bit worried.
I typically fight in my rather archaic, brawler style that tends to leave me open for some big punches. I changed my entire style for the Spinks fight and went with more of a defensive, counterpunching style that got me through 10 amazing rounds. Spinks had me completely outclassed in terms of skill, but I was able to land enough punches that did damage to keep things pretty close although the commentators were saying it seemed like the fight should go to Spinks in a close one. I thought I had won enough rounds to give myself a chance on the cards, but I knew it was going to be really close.
The results come in and its a draw on 2 of the cards and a 96-94 edge to me on the 3rd judge's card so I gladly take my draw. The most tense fight I've had to date by far. I really felt like every round I was just struggling to hold on and I don't think I could have made it 12 as my guy was getting really tired.
Just wanted to share my epic fight story. This game in a hell of a lot of fun.

I had one heck of a good fight today. I am playing as Tyson in legacy. Up to this point I was not paying much attention to my opponents. So anyway I am fighting against this guy who comes out guns a blazzin. I knock him down twice in the first round. I knock him down once in the seventh round and finally I knock him down in the tenth round. He was the busier fighter for sure. But I am thinking I should win pretty easy. When the score cards were annonced 2 judges had me winning by 1 point and the third judge had the fight as a draw. So I checked out my opponents rating, he was a 71 while I was a 66. What a heck of a fight.
The only slider I have touched is speed. I moved it up 3 clicks.

Even playing only the demo so far, I noticed the strategy factor is truly big in this game. I like the fact that you have to make adjustments, and when someone's more skilled than you, you inevitably have to fight his style. This is what boxing really his. Glad to hear they put this in the game, and that it's actually working.

Amateur is just one tournament, at the end of it you become pro. Pretty much the same as NCAA's RFTH or whatever they call it now where you play the one High School tournament before going off to college. Same thing, you just play one tournament and then you're pro.
For me, I have not touched the sliders and have been playing a career on Pro. 30-0-0 with 22 KOs. Had a lot of KOs in my earlier fights, but fight have been going the distance more now that I'm fighting the top guys. Also may have to do with my strength being some of my worst ratings due to the horribleness that is the Combo training game. My guy is a southpaw, so of course the Combo one is the one tied to the Left Hand. As time has gone on, my style went from "brawler" to "boxer" I mostly stay on the outside now with my jab and then attack the body with hooks.
When I was ranked 3rd, I got a fight with the #1 guy and barely won that fight. Majority decision. Won the first couple of rounds, lost the middle rounds and won enough of the later rounds to give me the edge. 95-95, 96-94, 96-94. My two title fights after that were easy. I destroyed Kelly Pavlik (who was just about maxed out) 120-107 on all scorecards. I now have two fo the three belts, but my next fight is a mandatory vs. someone without a belt so my goal to unifiy the Middleweight division is put on hold.
I do have two complaints. One, the "block-parry" thing. I kinda get this for in close fighting with hooks and uppercuts, but it's silly that when I throw a jab from the outside, thant someone could block it and counter off of it.
Secondly, I have a Chin rating of 95. You'd think that would be enough to stop those flash knockdowns, but they still happen to me once every other fight, which was the rate they happened to me when my Chin was in the 50s. A 95 chin should make a flash knockdown a very rare thing, but they still happen too often if I am supposedly supposed to have one of the best chins out there. What's the rating for if not to prevent getting knocked down? If it's for head damage, then what is "Head Toughness" for? Questions you'd normally consult a game manuel for....

Just had a great fight with Winky Wright, for as long as it lasted. Took the first round, he takes the next two as I get careless, I fight a tactical fight the rest of the way taking rounds, and then in the 7th it's ended due to cuts. We were both cut up, but his was worse and I take it by TKO. Unifed the Middleweight titles on this win.

Heh, I always end up spending more time with the CAB feature than I do in the ring. So far I have put together a Mayweather and Hopkins that I think look pretty solid.

Has anybody mapped their face into the game without using the Xbox Live Vision? I was hoping to be able to do it through easportsworld, it says the option is available on the menu screen, but I don't see where to do this on the actual website.
If anybody has done this, is there something I'm missing?

Thanks Ironhead.
So I did the best I could, but the guy looks nothing like me. Anybody else who's done it have any tips for making your boxer look a little more like you?

Had some good fights with Ironhead today. I tried fighting the best as could in the style of the boxer I chose. As Hearns, being aggressive and throwing a lot of straights, as Chavez getting in close and pounding the body and head with hooks, but me as Winky Wright, not so good. Trying to be a defensive fighter is not my style and Ironhead as Sergio Mora KOed me in the middle rounds.
And sorry about that headbutt in the Mora-Wright fight. I meant to try to cover up and hit the wrong the button.

Great fights, hands hurt afterward. You are dangerous pressing the attack but thankfully after getting repeatedly rocked in the first two fights I learned to be much more patient when you got on the inside. I have a feeling you would take most any fight against me with an aggressive approach though as you are good at pressing the action.
Anyway, thanks for the fights and we will have to do it again some time.

For all of the heat EA takes, nice to see them make the right move in making 2 good DLC's available for free soon. These will fix all of the issues that keep this game from being great for me (I still enjoy it now):
- I hate that when I try to throw a hook, I end up throwing a cross at times. I haven't played this series in years, but I'm looking forward to trying out button press controls.
- The 3 sliders being added are Stamina, punch accuracy, and counterpunch window which will take care of most of the gameplay mechanic issues that I have (most notably that too many punches can be thrown without tiring enough.)
EA REVEALS FIRST DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT PLANS FOR FIGHT NIGHT ROUND 4
Free New Game Content Coming by Early August; Button Controls Included In Additional Summer Update
July 7, 2009 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today its initial Downloadable Content (DLC) plan for Fight Night Round 4. Recently named the Game Critic Awards “Best Sports Game of E3 2009”, Fight Night Round 4 has been winning over reviewers since its release on June 23rd.
The first DLC pack, which will be available for free to both Xbox 360® and Playstation®3 users by early August, will include a new training gym, new gameplay sliders, as well as a host of new equipment that can be used for outfitting boxers. Xbox 360 users will also receive an exclusive alternate version of Sugar Ray Leonard in their first DLC pack, courtesy of Pizza Hut.
EA SPORTS™ will also be releasing a free downloadable game update by early September that will allow gamers to use face buttons on the Xbox 360 and PS3 game controllers to throw punches, hooks, uppercuts and haymakers.
“The depth and variety of new content we have planned this summer is going to make one of the most critically acclaimed games on the market even better,” said senior producer, Dean Richards. “Among the new content in development, our new button control scheme will give fans a choice for how they want to throw punches in the game. We strongly believe that the refined Total Punch Control is the most intuitive way to throw punches in Fight Night Round 4, but we also want fans of the franchise to have an option.”
Fight Night Round 4 is currently available for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game system from Microsoft. This game has been rated T for Teen by the ESRB, and 16+ by PEGI. For more information, log onto Fight Night Round 4 : Boxing Video Game : EA Sports (http://fightnight.easports.com).

I finally found this game cheap enough used to buy it. After a quick trial, I'm really enjoying it. I managed to win my amateur championship by fighting 4 different styles and I won my first professional fight by KO.
Before I go too far, I'd like to ask if there are any must-have downloads or slider settings I should be looking at? The game feels pretty good at the defaults, but it is always good to ask.

There is a patch out which should download automatically, but there is also a free DLC that just came out which adds a few much needed sliders as well as a few extra clothing items and an alternate version of Sugar Ray Leonard (which has to be unlocked with a Pizza Hut coupon or some cash.) You have to go to game add-ons to download the DLC. It is 887 MB so be prepared to wait a while.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you find it and how much was "cheap enough?" I'd like to pick this one up but the used prices I'm seeing online are only a few bucks less than retail new.

Amazon.com has it used for $40 right now.

I don't play online myself (yet). Is this patch worth getting with that in mind?
Just bought a 42" TV just to get the best out of this great game, got it rigged up to the xbox in the spare room so no moaning from Mrs :)

I bought it used through Amazon for just under $30. The guy had enough transactions tied to him that I felt comfortable trusting the condition of the game. The disc wasn't quite as clean as the guy suggested, but it seems to work fine.

This game is freaking fun. I played yesterday for about 4 hours and had a blast. What level is everyone playing on for their legacy? I started at the default Pro level but I think I'm a bit too good for that...unless higher ranked guys are a lot better than the lower ranked guys.
I also played 3 quick match xbox live games last night. I almost never play games online with random people, but this was a lot of fun too. I went 2-1 with the last match going all 10 rounds when my opponent realized he couldn't slug it out with me and tried to fight outside. I chased him down for 10 rounds and won in a split decision. I just love how defense actually matters in this game.

You can make your own fighter and take him through career mode, right? Does it schedule fights with big names right away or just generic guys?

No, they have generic guys. You actually start in a golden gloves amateur tournament and then work your way through the rankings. I think I started out around 50th or so in my division after winning the amateur tournament. You schedule the date and fighter for future fights and allow for more/less training depending on date. You're also required to have a minimum amount of rest between fights. I've fought 9-10 fights thus far and the difference between fighters is noticable. Each one has different offensive/defensive tendancies. You've got to mix it up.

Ok but you can create your own fighter, right? I mean you create your own guy and then in the beginning you fight no names and then work your way up to the big guns, right? Is there something in place from preventing Ricky Hatton from accepting a fight with you when you're brand new? I hope so.

Yes, you can create your custom fighter, and when you begin you're ranked 50th in your weightclass, and can only choose fighters within ~5 ranks of your own to fight, and all of those dudes, and pretty much everybody outside of the top 20 (or 10) in each weight-class are no-names, but still with appreciably different styles, sizes, and stances.

I just had a weird situation happen in an online fight. My controls somehow changed to using the buttons for all of the punches. The right stick didn't do anything. I couldn't clinch, push, or throw haymakers. After wasting the first round trying to figure out the controls, I ended up beating my opponent with a 10th round knockout. I hope this was just a one-time problem.
Picked this up a few days ago. Starting to get the hang out it, but I'm definitely still too much of a brawler and lack defense.
I'm working my way up the ranks with Tyson, but I can't get passed this one dude, he's 6'11". Any advice on how to get inside to fight?
FYI . . . Best Buy has it on sale for $20 this week.
