last minute plane tickets

My sister in law is expecting to give birth in a month or so. Her mom is planning to fly to meet her when she goes into labor. What is the best resource to get last minute tickets like that. I thought of hotwire and priceline, but, having given those a test drive, it seems like they don't give any better prices for last minute tickets than travelocity.

Is there something different that I am missing or that has come out in the last couple of years that I may not have noticed?

You're not missing much. In the last several years, the online airfare market has converged, so the prices you get on priceline and hotwire, even when you bid and don't have control over your flight times, is fairly comparable to what you would pull up on orbitz or travelocity.

One thing you might do is check craigslist for people selling frequent flyer miles or tickets. Often times these can be purchased for a discount.
