Don't they normally tend to avoid ships? It's not like we suddenly discovered the usage of water as a means of transport.

There's a growing amount of evidence to suggest that the amount of noise we put into the oceans confuses whales' (and dolphins') sensory ability, especially when related to sound, so these things tend to happen.
To use an analogy: you've got the radio blasting in your car, the light turns green at an intersection, and so you enter the intersection and promptly get t-boned by an ambulance you were unable to hear.
